Samantha Who?: The Hockey Date

Samantha Who?
(S01E07) "Everyday with me is an adventure." - Samantha

That's how I feel when I watch Samantha Who?, one of my guilty TV pleasures. We never know what to expect every week because the lead character doesn't know herself. The series has been one of the most popular new comedies of the season partially because of its lead-in (Dancing with the Stars) and its star (lovable Christina Applegate). I'm not ashamed to say that I enjoy it for its bubbly storylines (we all need a few series in our weekly watch list that don't require us to think too much), its lead character/actress, the devil/angel parts played by Andrea and Dena, and for Jean Smart!

Samantha Who?This week, Samantha wanted more than ever to discover who she was and is because she thought she wouldn't be able to go out on a date without having something to say about herself. I must admit that knowing nothing about yourself and not remembering much about the world could make a dinner date somewhat boring because once you commented on the weather, what would there be left to talk about? Of course, if Samantha had chosen to tell Kevin (played by hottie Eddie Cibrian) upfront about her condition, things would have been simpler. But Samantha is not a simple woman and, if she had told him up front, the episode would have been a bit... boring?

Samantha clearly acted on impulse when telling Kevin that she liked hockey. She was probably eager to share with someone something about her that was accurate. Thing is, she doesn't remember a thing about hockey and had to acquire the required intel before going on her hockey date. Besides her father, Samantha currently only has one other male figure to turn to and that's Todd. She turned to the latter to learn about hockey. It was funny to watch Sam guilt Todd, her friend, into helping her out so that she would eventually stop coming to the apartment so often! Todd does act as a friend to her but it's clear he is intrigued by the new Samantha. From her reaction to him saying he was a friend, we got more confirmation that she still sees him as more than a friend and is probably hoping for more eventually, especially since he is the only man (besides her father) who knows the whole truth, including the ugly stuff, about her.

I was glad that in the end, Samantha decided to not hide who she is and told the truth about her amnesia and being banned from the area. I hope he sticks around as he seems a good guy for Samantha to date first and rediscover who she is as a girlfriend.

Regina rocks! She is definitely a scene stealer and has says some of the best lines every week (see the "other tidbits" section at the end of this article). How fantastic during her "you're not going to get married if you stay home all night" speech and when she arranged that blind date? Even if Regina is pushy, opinionated, and dry at times, she truly wants what's best for her daughter. Plus she has taste! Just look at the hottie she served on a silver platter to Samantha. Without her mother's meddling this week, Samantha would have probably waited those three years (five tops) she has left before dating again.

Samantha Who?Andrea's storyline was so-so. It didn't add much to her character that we didn't know already. As Tina, err Dena, told her, she (Andrea) is materialistic, vain and self-absorbed. Although, it was nice to see both bond after Andrea was left behind by her (ex-)boyfriend.

What Samantha learned about herself this week:
  • She remembered her manicurist's name.
  • She won a trophy when playing for an all-boys (but her) peewee hockey team.
  • She likes presents, a lot!
  • She was banned from the arena for pretending to be handicapped.
  • She got a scar on one of her toes after chasing a goose that stole her watch.
Other tidbits of interest:
  • Dena and Samantha played the game of Life.
  • Staying true to her character, Andrea tested wardrobes to see which ones got people to notice her and to find something to wear that matched the private jet's seats. She also stayed up to get her body on Rome time.
  • I felt bad for the poor secretary who couldn't get a straight answer from Samantha and Andrea yet had to deliver exactly what they wanted because she feared of the possible outcome.
  • A lot of people react weirdly or not appropriately when you tell them you are sick or suffer from a disability. Chloe (played by ex-Lostie Kiele Sanchez) acted as if she thought Samantha had some hearing problem. Chloe was articulating every syllable, talking louder and making gestures to get her message across.
  • "How can you be yourself if you don't know who you are?" - Samantha
  • "I did not raise you to use amnesia as an excuse." - Regina
  • "You're not going to get married if you stay home all night." - Regina
  • "You have three years left, five tops. Go find a man." - Regina
  • "It's a date, not an inquisition." - Samantha
  • "I'm sweating and exhausted from trying to make some stranger think I'm something I'm not." - Samantha -- "Sweetheart, that is a date." - Andrea
  • "I have a lot to offer. I don't exactly know what." - Samantha

Besides Samantha, who is your favorite character?
