(S05E20) After ten weeks, and 19 drama filled episodes, tonight it was finally time to crown a winner. The last few weeks of the competition have been rather dramatic with camps forming on both sides of the "Marie" question. Is this a dance competition? Or is it a popularity contest? Probably a little of both, but the possibility that Marie could win the whole thing made for a lot of possibilities heading into the final show. The TV Squad readers picked the Helio vs Mel matchup by an overwhelming 76%. Were they right? That, and the final results, after the jump.
Tom kicked off the show calling it the most memorable finals ever. The pop-star performer, the Indy car champion, and the veteran performer. The hosts and judges have all been a little guilty of hyperbole this year, with repeated proclamations of 'best ever' this and 'best ever' that. I think it could go down as the most memorable finals ever, but not because it was the best dancing we have seen in a final.
They promised that in just a few minutes they would announce who came in third (a few minutes being about 25 in DWTS time), but first it was off to a recap of performance night. Helio was disappointed that he let Julianne down with their first performance. Mel took the hit for messing up the freestyle. Marie was almost in tears after her freestyle. Helio was excited to have made it through all of the lifts that he never thought he would make.
Samantha was backstage with all three couples and asked what they would miss about the show. Marie joked that she would miss the number eight. Mel said that she would miss the cast and crew. Helio said he would miss Julianne.
Tom teased that the results were coming up 'in just moments' again, before tossing it to Celine Dion performing "My Heart Will Go On." I know that song sold millions of copies, so somebody must like it, but good heavens, I just can't take it. She was joined by Tony, Karina, Alec, Edyta, Cheryl and Mark. They turned in a very beautiful performance, which did help take my mind off of that song.
After one more commercial break, it was finally time to get to the third place announcement. After the usual tense pause, Tom revealed that the couple in third place was Marie & Jonathan. Tom asked her what she takes away from this. She said that she felt like she was in a Cinderella story, even referring to the judges as her evil step-sisters. She later said it was one of the best experiences of her life. Marie and Jonathan had their final dance, the tango, and were sent on their way.
Tom and Samantha opened up the first of many taped pieces taking a look back at the season. These weren't really bad, but for anyone that has been following along all season, there really wasn't anything new in any of it. I think the show would have gained something from trimming some of that out and getting it down to a solid, jam-packed hour. At times, it was really dragging as they filled.
Then it was time for all of the eliminated couples to get back on the floor. Alex and Josie led off with their foxtrot. I think Josie was really plagued by just not being well known enough. She did look great in her green dress, and it was fun to see her again.
Albert and Anna were up next with Albert's infamous Elvis inspired number. Watching it again, it really is too bad that Albert was booted so early. That performance was better than a lot of the stuff we saw later in the competition. Wayne and Cheryl took the stage next, but they were not performing because of Wayne's recent health problems. He let everyone know that he is going to be just fine, and he will be on the DWTS tour.
There was a break from the trip down memory lane with the eliminated couples as we got the next tape package. This one was about the friends and family of the finalists. It included Sporty, Ginger, and Baby Spice, some of the guys from Helio's racing team, Helio's sister, Sam Hornish Jr., Maks, and Roger Penske. It was a nice break from the clip show segments, but still stood out as the show just not getting on with it.
Floyd and Karina were up next, but they weren't dancing tonight either. Floyd is preparing for a big fight in a week and a half. Then, Mark and Kym were back with a foxtrot. I still think Mark was probably in the competition a little longer than his dancing should have allowed for, but he really did grow on me. Their "King of the Road" performance was probably my favorite of their numbers.
Off to more highlights. This package included Marie's fainting spell once again. We've seen that more times than we ever needed to already, but the one interesting new bit was the look backstage at the rest of the cast as they reacted. This one also had the elimination of Sabrina, which I still find so surprising.
And that led to Sabrina and Mark, back to perform their cha cha cha. It was really good, once again. And it does show exactly why it was so shocking when they were eliminated. Tom had to wait to get to his interview as the audience continued cheering.
Samantha was talking with former champs Drew and Apollo. Drew thought that the standard of dancing this season has been phenomenal, although he did take the judges to task for their repeated 'best ever' lines. Asked about what they finalists are thinking, Apollo said most likely they are feeling relieved.
Jane and Tony were back next with their Viennese Waltz. There was no question this time about whether or not they did a lift. Jane was a good foot and a half off the floor through the spin. As they finished, they blew kisses at Carrie Ann.
Cameron and Edyta decided to go with their pasa doble for their encore performance, as you would have expected. Looking back, Cameron probably left the competition right about where he should have from a dance point of view. It was a good showing for him though. They also got a great reaction from the audience. In his interview Cameron said that he had no idea that he would enjoy the show as much as he did. Just before leaving the stage, he made good on taking his shirt off if he made it to the final show.
Finally, Jennie & Derek finished up the return performances as they took the floor to dance their mambo. Jennie finally looked completely at ease now that the pressure of the competition is off of her. That led to a quick stop backstage where Samantha had the two finalists. She asked what they would like to say to each other. Helio tried to tell Mel to break a leg, meaning good luck, and Mel interrupted him saying, "No, you break your leg."
Celine Dion was back to perform her new single, "Taking Chances" while accompanied by emotional scenes from the season. If you like Celine, this performance was probably right up your alley. It's just not my thing. The one thing that occurred to me listening to her perform though, is she starting to get a little of the Cher warble in her voice?
Another package looked at the strengths of the finalists. The diva vs. the driver. Helio cracked me up with his thoughts, "Mel? Wow. She can dance." Mel compared Helio and Julianne to two little cutesie dolls. Len said that Mel is the most versatile dancer they have ever had on the show. Of Helio, he said he is a born competitor.
Finally, an hour and a half into the show, it was time to actually start the competition.
Mel & Maks were up first and they chose to bring back their mambo from week eight. Mel was determined to up the score from 29 to 30 this time and they set about making improvements to the routine. It wasn't the dance that I expected them to choose. I thought it would be the pasa doble. That being said, this was still a good choice. Their mambo really captured the fun side of Mel's personality. I didn't think it was as well performed this time as it was when they originally did it, but it was still very good.
Len said that Mel was an absolute revelation, adding that their mambo was incredible. Bruno called it truly magnificent and praised her professionalism and good humor. Carrie Ann said that Mel danced like she was born to do this. Backstage, Mel said that winning the competition would mean everything to her. Score: 30 (10,10,10)
Helio and Julianne chose to do their Mask inspired quickstep for their final performance. Julianne suggested adding a lift, but Helio nixed it, saying that they got a perfect score without a lift, so they didn't need it. It was a great choice for a dance. Their quickstep was my favorite performance of the season. It's such a crowd pleaser, and it really shows Helio off well. They did a great job recreating the performance and got a huge reaction from the crowd.
Bruno said the engine was in full power and the turbo was engaged, adding that Helio has achieved an incredible amount in the competition. Carrie Ann said it was her favorite dance. Len praised Helio for the risks he's taken during the competition. He also paused to give a nod to the band. Helio said that even if he didn't win, it has been an amazing experience. Score: 30 (10,10,10)
All of that meant that the judges had effectively taken themselves out of the decision. With totals of 85 and 84, Mel had less than three tenths of a point advantage, so it all would come down to the fan vote.
Finally, they got down to the big announcement. After ten weeks of competition, the winners of Dancing With The Stars are Helio and Julianne! Helio called it an incredible moment. He thanked his team, his family, and Julianne. Someone even handed him a carton of milk, a nod to the Indy 500 for those of you that are not race fans.
Looking back on the season as a whole, I think it all came together rather well. There were some bumps along the way. Some people were eliminated a little earlier than they probably should have been, and some people hung around a little longer than some of us might have thought they should. In the end though, I think America got it right in moving Mel and Helio to the finals. Overall, I'd call the season a success.

Justice...finally. Helio deserved it - and Marie got better than she deserved.
I have to agree with the masses after Sabrina’s performance tonight - she was robbed (by a whining, pushy, rude, uncoordinated doll maker no less). All the returning stars danced well.
This whole Marie thing is a positive though, it shows many young people that complaining does nothing (it's how Bush managed reelection) - go out and vote - make your voice heard.

Why is everyone so down on her? She has 8 kids - one of which has just gone to rehab and a second husband who is about to divorce her. It's a wonder she even made it as far as she did! There's a real world out there people!!

Dear, oh, dear.
Once again, we are given proof that it's near-impossible for a female celeb to win on this show. Mel and Sabrina were both better than Helio -- come on, we all know it's true -- but both suffered the same sad fate, albeit at different times. The reason? Not hard to guess: judging from the postings here on TV Squad this season, there's a strong resistence among a lot of women when it comes to supporting a female contestant.
Helio seems like a nice guy, and is a good dancer, but let's face it, he ain't in the same league as Drew and Apollo and Mario.
Nope, the cat's out of the bag. The gals got robbed, and it's probably mainly other women who are robbing them!

First season I've watched. I knew they would win. The other couples were getting annoying. The show drags things out TOO much! that's why I skipped a lot of shows....

I'm SOOOO happy that Helio and Julianne won!! Helio has great charisma and he is also charming, and Julianne is very sweet and likable. Although Sabrina should have been in the finals as well, but she wasn't due to lack of votes. But I'm happy that my 2nd favorite couple won! YAY Helio and Julianne!!!!!!! :-D

I was routing for Helio the entire time because he wasn't a dancer, just a competitor. The idea is for the celebrities to learn to dance and to watch how far they come. Sabrina was a shame, she was the best but she is also a dancer! And Marie, if she had won, I never would have watched the show again. She is clumsy, too sweet, and annoying. All in all, it was a good season, but last year with Joey and Apolo was phenomenal.

I was very happy with the final two and I've loved Helio since the beginning (I never thought Mel would get this far and it would come down to him and Sabrina). But, as he was announced the winner, I felt just a twinge of disappointment that it wasn't Mel. She's been spectacular all season as well, so either of them deserved it but it would have been nice to have a female champ this time out. We love ya Mel!

What's the big dang deal?! Why do certain people seem to be bugged out about it? Marie's not as bad as some make her out to be. She's grrrrrrrrreat!
Helio is wonderful.
But in my personal opinion. Mel should have won!!! GRRRRRR!
Peace out. ;-)

I'd put this season behind Season 3 with Emmit, Mario Lopez and Joey Lawrence, and behind Season 2 with Drew Lachey, Stacey Kiebler and Jerry Rice. I really think if the final 3 were Sabrina, Helio and Mel, and Jane Seymour and Marie Osmond left alot earlier in the season it would have been much better. Overall it was decent. I honsetly hope they do an All-Star Dancing with the Stars where they bring back 13-15 celebrities who didn't win. Imagine, Sabrina Bryan, Mario Lopez, Laila Ali, Stacey Kiebler, Joey Lawrence maybe even Lisa Rinna and many other people who left way too early. It would be one heck of a show. Either way this season was probably 3rd best, entertaining, shocking and fun, I just hope next season it is more a dance competition than popularity contest, but I doubt it.

I liked this finale, it was much better than the show last night. It was more of a reunion/wrap-up show, and I liked that they gave all the returning contestants a chance to do a full dance. I can just imagine what the after-party was like, since they looked to have been celebrating early.
I love Helio, I knew from the first dance that he was the only man in the competition who could win it. But, with all the great female dancers this season, it is disappointing that a woman did not win. It really comes down to a lot of things, including women not supporting other women. In this case, I think Mel and Marie may have cancelled each other out. I don't know. Helio is a gentleman and he truly appreciated his win. And, Mel's "acid reflux" face vs. Helio's bowed head where he looked like he was praying...well, that was funny.
I loved how Helio kissed Julianne for a long, long time at the end of the Quick Step and he didn't drop her! I am glad Marie was third. I don't think Entertainment Tonight should have a commentator who is connected by blood or marriage to a current contestant. (Lisa Rinna the year her husband Harry Hamlin was in competition). It should be someone much less biased.
At least the top two remaining were the best dancers left in the competition. Sabrina was amazing, but that ship has sailed. She has a brilliant future ahead of her, and she got a wonderful boyfriend out of this, so I am sure she isn't complaining!
There were a lot of strange things happening this season, some tragedies, some controversy. It is a very addictive show. I like how they pace the new seasons, too, so that as soon as you forget the last one, the new one starts. Now my Monday and Tuesday nights are free to, I don't know, read books. As my husband says, "Let's go take a ballroom dancing class, we could lose weight!" That is the greatest thing, how some of these celebs go from schlubs to gods and goddesses.
Oh, and a couple of comments were made that I totally agreed with. So many were criticizing Mel and Sabrina for having previous dance experience, but we had Joey Fatone come in second last season, and Drew Lachey in season two, both veterans of boy bands. And, these boy bands have choreography in the same category as Cheetah Girls and a lot more difficult than the Spice Girls. But, I never heard the same criticisms about them. However, this is the third consecutive year that an athlete, not a performer, has won, so I guess this competition finally ends up being a show about someone who turns into a dancer over the course of several months. It's all fun. Glad everyone survived, more or less.

I would go for the amateurs like Apollo and Helio to get the trophy. The show becomes more exciting when you see inexperienced stars blossom into really good dancers.
Congratulations Helio and Julianne!!!
Not to forget, Julianne is a brilliant choreographer, two in a row championships for her.
Way to go, Julianne!!!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Julianne's choreo-
graphy - it was outstanding and imaginative all the way, as well as challenging. The final race car driver number was inspired - perfect for the team. I had put my money on these two from the beginning, just as I did last time with Apolo 0ho - let's hear it for the athletes!

I'm reallllllly glad that Helio won, i mean Mel is a very good dancer but she just seem to "cocky" at times. Mel just had that attitude that she already had this competion in the bag. I mean the competion is all about who had no type of dance experience but in the 10 weeks of competion became a really good dancer so i think they voters picked the right winner!!! Helio you deserve it!!!! Too bad Mel maybe next time

I was hoping that Mel would win. I thought what Maks said should put to rest a lot of the grumbling that certain ones shouldn't be on the show because they have "dance experience," i.e. they've performed before an audience before. When the hip-hop dancers were brought into Mel and Maks' rehearsal to show Maks a thing or two, he said how hard it was for him to do that kind of dancing. He's been dancing for 23 years and had problems adjusting to a different type of dance! I'm sure people will still say that there is some supposed unfair advantage in having been in a boy band or girl group, but I trust what Maks said.

I voted for Mel, but certainly Helio deserved to win as much as anyone, in my opinion. Like a commenter above, I thought this was a better results show than we normally get, though 2 hours was a bit much to sit through.
With as popular, and as well covered in the media, as this show is, I'm really hoping that ABC and the exec producers of DWTS can step up the caliber of celebrities we get for this spring and future seasons. I didn't know who so many of this season's "celebrities" were. I've had this same thought at the end of each of the DWTS seasons, and each new season we get another c- and d-list group of people. Hopefully DWTS can break through to b- and a-list stars and this show can be even more successful.

Congratulations Helio & Julianne!!! My votes went to Mel & Maks, but Helio & Julianne deserved that trophy too! I think the show was way too long...would have been happier with 1 hour. But it was nice to have the contestants do a full dance. And can I just say, can Floyd's ego get any bigger?

I was rooting for Helio but I thought Mel would walk away with the trophy. It was a great season, I don't know what I'm going to do until March! On some side notes, what does everyone think of Karina's nose job? Also, I know that they say that people who will be on the following season of DWTS are usually in the public on the season finale, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I saw Gloria Allred there yesterday. PLEASE TELL ME I'M WRONG!!!! Overall, I think this was the best season yet. I wonder what will happen next year!

The Top 10 reasons Helio Castroneves should have won DWTS - and DID!!
10: That smile
9: His charm and warmth
8: His enthusiasm
7: His positive attitude
6: His determination and focus
5: He is humble - during the elimination rounds he never once looked like he thought he was safe
4: He's a good sport - literally - how many race car drivers would wear sequins
3: He's a gentleman - he always accepted the judges criticism's with grace (take note Marie)
2: His partner Julianne Hough - she's an amazing dancer and more importantly, an amazing choreographer.....
and the number one reason he won:
1: The man can DANCE!!
Congratulations
Seriously, I think it is much harder for a man to learn to dance like that in 3 months, than it would be for a woman. Which is why I think a man usually wins DWTS. It's women who can't even get their man up to dance at a wedding who appreciate the accomplishment and vote :-)
