Rather than have you sit through what basically would amount to a more detailed version of the Early Look post I did about Razor last month, I wanted to at least make sure you all had a forum of sorts to discuss the movie. I will, however, mention a few points worth mentioning again ...
- Obviously the biggest "news" from the episode was the revelation that Starbuck is supposedly the bringer of apocalypse. Should the hybrid really be believed?
- Several times we saw the message hit home that "this has happened before and it will happen again." Ron D. Moore had also made that theme pretty clear several times in the past, not to mention the webisodes carrying that same message.
- OK, so it's pretty clear that Cain was into girls. Know what? Big deal. I have no idea why that was such a fuss when that spoiler came up before, as it doesn't seem to mean a whole lot of anything significant.
- It was surreal to see Cain actually kill the former XO in the exact way it was told to the crew of the Galactica in the series. A extremely tense moment in the movie for sure.
- Any thoughts on the old Cylon "guardians" and what their purpose might be in the fourth season?
Be sure to also check out what I already said in the Early Look post.

Thought the Starbuck thing was pretty cool and shocking. Also don't care about Cain being a lesbian... interesting, but whatever. I think it adds dimension to the torture she authorized for Six since she had the past with her.
The guardians were interesting, and it was cool to see the old-school Cylons, though the CGI on them looked a little fake. Cool though.
I also agree it was pretty cool to see the horrors committed under Cain's command that we had previously only heard recounted.
All in all, very cool, and great to have some new Battlestar for the run.

That was beautiful. Spectacular TV in all of its definitions. God, how I've missed all of these people. I have to watch it all again since I'm almost certain I haven't digested it all, but that's why I love this show so much.
Also can I say how fierce Shaw and Cain were? Wow.

I saw the Flashbacks and read so much about this movie so there weren't too many surprises...other than the first hybrid telling Shaw that Starbuck would usher in the end of humanity. I have no idea if I should believe the frakker or not. In one way, yes...since he jammed the signal back to Pegasus...kind of a "frak you" moment before she blew him up. On the otherhand, no...since he's a lunatic hybrid and a cylon.
One thing is clear, though...it was GOOD to see this frakking show again...and according to the previews, it will be back in March, not April as previously reported. Good news...so say we all!
PS WHY do they have to bring the whole same sex attraction bit into things? I could of survived without knowing about Cain and Six...

BTW I'm one of the few who didn't read any of the spoilers or even saw any of the webisodes so this movie was just ::points finger gun towards head and simulates brain exploding::...
As for the Cain/Gina thing, I agree with Nathaniel in that it adds an intriguing context to Cain as a character and to the torture of Gina. As for it being something more for the show, I try not to think about it.

I thought that the Cain backstory really didn't added anything. It seemed that all they did was film the anecdotes that we already knew about her and Pegasus: jumped with no settings, cannibalized a group of ships, shot her XO, tortured a Six... and they give us a character who "bridges" the Cain era and Adama era. Since we haven't seen that character at any other time in the Adama era, her fate is obvious.
It was nice to see the old school cylons depicted as formidable. Their apparent invincibility was always the weakest element of the original show.

Speaking of Kendra Shaw, I was a little disappointed that she was someone we hadn't seen before and didn't see after. I really wish there could have been a way we could have already seen her or something... after all, this movie basically tells the viewer "you think you've seen all the stuff that happened... but nope, here's a story that happened in between stuff you already saw." If that's the case, then theoretically couldn't they do TV movies as much as they want after the series ends? Actually, that doesn't sound like too bad an idea, but it still seems kind of messy to insert something into the middle of canon.
Speaking of which... why is "present day" according to the movie actually over a year ago compared to the timeline we know? Ehh, who knows.
Sorry, nitpicky second post.

The Quiznos madness definitely detracted me from the show. As they say in that classic SNL sketch, "who are the ad wizards who came up with that one?"
Anyway, Razor itself felt like a movie which was edited for TV and lost a lot in translation. Yes, I know it essentially was a movie edited for TV, but I thought they could have done a better job sticking with any of the particular plotlines since it seemed like the story simpy jumped from one to another w/o any real sense of continuity or thoughtful editing. One purpose this did serve is that it has me excited about the DVD release since Ron Moore even pointed out, thats probably the way it was meant to be seen.
Its pretty sad that the most exciting part of tonight for me was the preview for season 4. It looks like it will kick major a-double-money-signs, but it also sucked to see it isn't coming until March 2008. I did like the character of Kendra Shaw. It was funny to see what Starbuck would be like if she were in CIC, and it showed why Cain took such an interest in Starbuck, she was just like Shaw.

Just when I thought I had cemented a grudging respect for Cain and even regretted her loss, along comes this movie to upset it all over again. But before I go into that, I want to say that overall, this was a pretty entertaining movie. The two highlights (for me personally), involved two guest appearances. The old style cylons from the old series were a joy to see again, and I loved it when they spoke to each other in the old "by your command" stuff. Loved it!!! It was like a trip down memory lane when I seen that. Heck, for that matter it was like a trip down memory lane seeing the the new series (as long as it's been).
Secondly (and most important)......The guest appearance of Grace Park. You know, even with that thing around her neck she dominated the screen with her poise, beauty, and acting ability. I was not planning on buying the dvd for this movie, but since Grace Park was in it...even for that short time.....I must have it. I hope Grace will get a few more guest appearances in season four.
The conduct of Cain is puzzling but more puzzling is the attitude of her crew. These battlestar crews are (I assume) taken from the best and the brightest people in the selection process. They are also (assuming again) given the top-rigorous training available for such an elite fleet. Now here is Cain, who blows the brains out of her first officer and friend on the bridge. Is that an action of an officer that has a grip on the crisis at hand? Not to mention the fact that they need every experienced officer now more than ever. So the the crew, (instead of putting this maniac in a straight-jacket) reacts with "Yesser ma'am yessser! When it was clear that Cain had lost control of her perspective when she ordered the murder of the civilians, the crew...when they had the moral right and the means to stop it....failed.
I am not nit-piking to be mean, only to vicariously blend in how I would look at this in a real world perspective. Cain, as a commanding officer, is supposed to be in control and be a leader, not a rouge pirate. Look at it this way....in the real world, if Cain and humanity lived through all this, Cain would be charged with crimes against humanity. Good thing it's only a movie. And an interesting one at that.

1/2 interesting writing and conventional sci-fi concepts, and 1/2 really bad cliches and bad writing and melodrama.
I don't understand!!!!
Isn't it cheaper to fix the writing before committing to the expensive CGI and special effects? Irritatingly sucky. The 5 or 6 razor flashbacks combined had more intrigue and style than the 2 hours of "razor" (a bad, overly heavily handed metaphor) combined. And, in the end, they nuked the only palpable result of the exercise: an interesting character.
Maybe they should have paid Drew Goddard a decent wage and had him write the screenplay instead of letting him write Cloverfield? What a wasted opportunity.
Quiznos: a tasty, toasted wasted opportunity: mmm-mmm-mm-mmmm-mmmm.

Tim, what do you mean by guest appearances? Isn't Athena still around for next season?
I wasn't expecting the movie to have so much "present time" (actually a year or so ago by BSG time) in it, but that was really cool, as we got to see a lot more of the BSG cast we know and love than I expected. Very cool.
March... geez, that's just evil.

Ok, a little criticism here. I love BSG and was greatful for the movie, but there's an elephant-in-the-room question that I feel was unanswered. Why was Cain so brutal? Its important, since all of the other BSG characters that we have met have been thankfully infused with rich backstorys. (We know why Starbuck is so hard, etc.) So why, Cain, why?
It was war? Yes, but so many of the other top military leaders have been around too, and they are ready to kick some butt, but even they weren't shooting their own staff, and civilians. (and hey isnt that the epitome of stupid? I mean we are short on HUMANS here, if you had not noticed).
The cylons killed her daddy ate her lunch? Maybe, but the movie doesnt say that, so we can't assume its true.
The lesbian thing? No, No, NO. besides she shot her XO before we found out that she was betrayed.
Was she crazy/evil? Hard to assume that since she was very normal looking/acting at the start of the movie and never really seemed anything but god-awful brutal.
so why why why was she the way she was?

I wondered the same thing about Cain all throughout. The movie didn't reveal anything at all about her. (And neither did it explain much about Kendra.) In terms of characterizations of these two, I was disappointed.
Really, the most logical explanation would be if it is revealed in the end that Cain is the fifth and final Cylon (of the Final Five). But I don't think I'd want the show to return to this whole Pegasus subplot.

To the person who had such a huge problem with Cain sleeping with Six because you didn't need to know that: please get over yourself. In the world of BSG, no one cares that Cain liked girls, just that she was frakkin a Cylon. Unfortunately I was terribly put off by the Sci-Fi channel's treatment of it: "Cain and Gina were LOVERS!!! Brought to you by Quiznos...mmmmmm Toasty." That was in terrible taste mister Sci-Fi Channel announcer guy.
To the story: Does Cain really need a reason to go all psycho? Her entire world(s) is/are gone and she wants bloody revenge. I think that the reaction of the Pegasus crew under Cain is the norm, whereas Galactica is abnormal. They run. They don't seek revenge, and even Adama explains that he could have been Cain if he hadn't had Roslin in his face fighting for the Civilian ships, and if he had not had to look Lee in the eyes.
I really thought this was a stellar movie, my favorite part was when Lee ordered Kara to stay and detonate the nuke. I can't wait to buy the DVD.

Nathaniel, that was just a little sarcasm to the writers for not letting Grace Park have many appearances in the series of late (sorry about the confusion).

Starbuck's prophesy was obviously the biggest thing, considering that is what a lot of the beginning of the fourth season will be about. Without that part the show / movie would be pointless.
That said I read spoilers about The Cylon Guardians and what they do in season 4 seems pretty cool.

Is it just me, or was the face of the woman below the man behind the door in the Adama flashback that of Starbuck? Whoever it was, she had blonde hair. It didn't look like Six. If it was Starbuck it could explain a lot about her "destiny" and her origins.

Zolo, excellent question! Although, I was thinking more that it was the "prototype" for Number 6. I'll have to pause/zoom my DVD copy, but it looked to me like the blonde was a young girl. I think we're supposed to assume (I know, I know) that the people on the ship captured by the Cylons were the "original" templates for the 12 models of humanoid Cylons. Presumably, there were more than 12 people on the ship, but I'm guessing that only 12 survived the initital experimentation. Another great question: Who/whatwas the hybrid that Shaw talked to? Perhaps the "first" success inthe experiments, ormaybe even the catalyst behind the Cylons' switch from mechanoid to humanoid? Rogue programmer/nutcase, perhaps? Maybe they'll give us some more on that in s-4.
All else aside, wonderful movie, especially the opening battle sequence at the shipyard. Frakkin' AWESOME, and at least a little tomething to tide us over till March. Here's hoping the Writer's strike ends SOON! So say we all.
