ABC has launched the first of 13 web-only, mini episodes for Lost. The webisodes are about two minutes long and feature the major characters from Lost. They're called Missing Pieces and are meant to fill in extra information about characters and hint at the overall mythology of the island. The first episode of the series is called "The Watch" and it features Jack and his father. And, oh my God, it is awful.
What a waste of time. The webisode is a seemingly meaningless exchange between Jack and his father before Jack's wedding to Sarah. Jack's dad gives him a watch. And it takes two and a half minutes to do it. Plus, the dialogue is very poor. For instance, Jack says, "Dad, are you trying to tell me something?" And, I could be wrong, but I think Matthew Fox isn't too thrilled about the webisode because he seems to be phoning it in.
The 'About' page on Missing Pieces says that the webisodes will either be a little background on major characters or have some sort of significance to the mystery of the island. The page says, "For each story, we leave it up to the fans to figure out where these pieces fit into the overall mythology." Puh-lease. Is anybody else tired of being jerked around by this show?

can't we give the writers enough credit that maybe the secrets here will be revealed in a later show?
no? i didn't think so either.
i hate all these websides/mobisodes/online exclusives. how dumb do they think we are? they're never that important or impactful to the overall story line because they know no one's going to see them. yet they constantly tell us how great they are to watch and how we better go to their website/get an amex card/switch cell providers. or, they make them irrelevant to the larger story so as not to hamper down the production by having everything tie together. retarded.

I agree with you. The webisode was so awful that even Matthew Fox seemed to have given up! I don't expect the webisodes to be earth shattering but I expect them to have some meat that I can chew on. "The Watch" felt like a bone... no meat... nothing to chew on... It was useless and a waste of my time.

Isn't this exactly what the writings are striking over? I bet Matthew Fox and the writers aren't being paid a cent for their work on these, hence the poor quality. The Office webisodes are the only good ones I've seen, and the creators were pretty pissed about being forced to do them.

I want to watch them, but if this is what the writers are striking about, then I can live without knowing the full mythology.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that these Lost mobisodes are not being produced by Disney, so its a rare brand extension separate from the studio.

You don't like it then don't watch it. Me I'll take anything LOST I can get.
It's hard to know yet if it's anything more than a new deleted scene as no one in the know is talking about it because of the strike. I'm hoping the 2nd one will show us that there's something more to this than just scenes that added so little that they weren't even written and deleted the first time around. Of course, they also could come back to pay off when it turns out Jack tells Claire the story of the watch and they figure out they are related.

H-
You're exactly the point I'm making. I've never seen any mobisodes/websiodes/etc. be any kind of pay-off. Inherently, it seems unlikely they'd put ANYTHING good or interesting in one of them. I have no idea what the numbers are for viewing these, but I can't imagine it's a high percentage. They're merely a way to build up web traffic or sell ads. Of course, that's the point of the show itself, but until they stop acting like these types of things are "must see" when they never are, I'll support/watch them. I resent the way they promote them as being significant when they're not. However, if you choose to buy into them, then good on you...wish I could...

It would have been awesome if they reenacted the gold pocketwatch scene from Pulp Fiction.

*sigh*
The webisodes (formerly mobisodes) were never intended to advance the mythology. They are doing what they were intended to do: provide the viewer with glimpses into moments of the characters lives to satiate us during the long hiatus. I wasn't blown away by it, but it's hard to get emotionally involved in a scene (even with already defined characters) when it's two minutes long.
And even that scene, with it's generally superficial conversation had a couple layers that shine a light on characters' behaviours in episodes we've already seen.
Then again, I'm someone who liked the first six of season 3 and even liked Jack's tattoo episode, so maybe I'm physically incapable of disliking something Lost related...

You want an example of bad minisodes, check out the 24 ones. They were originally released on mobile phones in England. I tracked the first couple down on the internet until they released the season five (I think) DVD set with the whole collection. It's 24 minutes of awful CTU agents doing something parallel to Jack Bauer, ugh...
The Post season 2/pre season 3 BSG webisodes were pretty terrific though, I hope they include them on the season three dvd.

I enjoyed the webisode. Like someone else said, I'll take anything Lost I can get. And I think maybe you need to take your medication before you do your writing--you're coming across a little tense. It's a two minute promo piece. Relax.

Bummer- I had hope for these. There's no excuse for not watching though, they're a measly 2 minutes of my life.
Also, why not check out http://www.hungrymantv.com to see some of the outrageous online TV content my company has to offer.
I highly recommend "the Biggs" as a place to start.

Wow, that was terrible. But I wasn't expecting much. These webisodes are never, ever important to the plot, nor do they ever reveal secrets, and half the time they aren't any good either.
I'll skip the rest of this crap...I can wait until the premiere of the half-season of "Lost" this winter.

I'll reserve judgment on the LOST webisodes until more have been released. Though for now I'll say that it remains to be seen if this glimpse is a piece of a larger puzzle. Will this interaction between Jack and his father related some how to subsequent webisodes in some manner? Will there be the possibility that one or some of these webisodes be a flash-forward? There may be more here than first meets the eye. After all this isn't the first time a watch has been transfered from a father to a son. So relax TVSQUAD and wait and see.

You suck!
Before dismissing all the episodes how about we take the time to appreciate the fact that this is actually original content from a major show starring the leading character. So many shows offer webisodes that are animated, or deleted scenes, or follow a B or C level character that nobody cares about.
Also this is Lost, who knows what kind of reverberation that watch exchange will have on the future of the show.
