(S02E07) Well now, it seems the majority of viewers thought there was no way in hell that Deb was going to be getting together with Lundy. In fact, 198 of 288 of you thought there was no way. Looks like the writers threw you for a loop this time around.
Anyway, that's a pretty insignificant storyline given what happened in this episode. We've got Dexter's manifesto and its fallout, and of course Dexter framing Doakes in a big way.
Dexter's contact at City Hall, Camilla, made another appearance in this episode, which of course we knew couldn't mean anything good. As sweet a woman as she is, she's certainly a loose end that may continue to haunt Dexter for as long as she lives, not just until she retires in a year.
I think it's clear now what Lila's addiction is -- more like an affliction. She's either truly trying to recover from being a psycho stalker-girlfriend or she simply uses NA meetings to find unsuspecting helpless men to latch onto. Most likely she's the latter, and I'm sure Dexter's quickly going to figure that one out.
Last week I polled everyone asking, hypothetically, who Dexter would most likely kill first. It sure seems that, so far, Gayle's out of the running. Dear God, though -- that woman is certifiable. Rita's amazing for not being more messed up from being raised by that loon.
I think Deb's right in that Dexter fucked up with Rita. I really believe the two of them will be back together soon enough. If nothing else, the kids will be a big factor in making the two of them reassess what they mean to each other and what each of them is willing to forgive or put up with.
Now, the biggest moment of the episode is a tossup between what happened between Doakes and the final revelation by the investigative team on Dexter's manifesto. Now, here's the thing that's bugging be about this season so far. Last season I don't think I was alone in guessing who the Ice Truck Killer was early on, so the reveal wasn't exactly a surprise, though it was an awesome season regardless. I feel that the same thing is happening this season, and it's pretty clear now -- more than ever -- that Dexter is going to frame Doakes into looking like the Bay Harbor Butcher. Seriously, it's the only way out of his predicament, especially with the heat coming down on him hard and fast.
Before tonight's episode I would have guessed that Lila could possibly be used as a scapegoat for Dexter, though with the whole "law enforcement" angle, there's just no way that can happen unless she's a former cop and we don't know it.
So, what's Dex going to do to keep everyone off his tail next week? What more will Lila resort to to keep Dexter her faithful little puppy?
Two best quotes of the episode:
Lila: "Pardon my tits."
and
Matsuka: "He's a Trekker. That shit's straight from Deep Space Nine!"
Batista: "What? Mark Twain said that. It's one his most famous quotes."
Special Agent: "Twain was never on Deep Space Nine. He was on Next Generation."

yeah, i was wrong about the deb/lundy thing! (electra complex, anyone?)
it definitely seems like dexter might frame doakes, but--maybe i'm cheating, here--the previews for next week's episode make it seem like lundy suspects dexter in a big way.
i stand by my suspicion that deb's going to solve the case before lundy does and then chooses to save her brother... somehow. :/
and it looked like dexter figured that lila's a nut-job at the end of the episode. "hey, they fixed your light..."
dexter might have to kill her after he finds out that she likes to burn NA members alive.
bah, can't wait for next week!

Yeah I was lso wrong about Deb and Lundy but I guess they had to do it seeing as they're only half way through the season so a static mentor/mentee relationship wouldn't be thrilling television. I still think it's a mistake but c'est la vie. The show's still awesome.

Doesn't Doakes go after Dexter at his home and find his blood-slides? I recall seeing that in a preview at some point.
Anwyay, I loved Dexter's confrontation of Doakes, it really put a smile on my face.
It will be innarestin' if Deb figures out it's Dexter, falls in love with Lundy, and has to choose between the two. I suppose that's where this is going. Maybe Deb will help Dex frame Doakes.
I see Lila dying (not necessarily being killed by Dexter) in the next few episodes.

I haven't been watching the show, but love your reviews.
I'm glad to see that the Dexter writers are Trekies because he really was on TNG! :)

Very good episode!
He is definitely getting a little cocky, and I think that will be his downfall (if anything is).
The thing with Lundy is weird, but it makes sense, at least from Deb's point of view. He makes her feel safe, and confident, and wanted. He gives her peace. I'm not exactly what she gives him, though, in a "relationship" way, and I have a feeling that he will tell her in the next couple weeks that it can't continue. Not in a romantic way, anyway.
I don't think he sees Lila for what she is, not yet, but he will start putting the pieces together when she does the next outrageous thing. He is not stupid.
It looks like Rita is going to take him back, and I don't know how I feel about that. He is good for her, but he just tossed her aside when he thought he had found something better, and now is back because he feels he owes it to the kids.

Ugh. I do not like this Deb/Lundy storyline at all. Its much too meandering. Anyways, the Dex/Doakes storyline is fantastic. And it was interesting how they painted Rita in a positie light and Lila in a nagative light after having done the opposite for the majority of the season. I have a feeling Lundy is going to find out Dex soon, but he'll keep it quiet because he believes in his cause/does it for Deb. And I shake the inkling that at some point this year, Dex will kill Lila. Anyone else thinking this?

Loved this episode. Lila and Gayle are psycho with a capital P. Cant say im too fond of the Deb/Lundy storyline, but i think its essential to where I believe the story is going. Good job by the writers coming full circle with the whole light bulb thing. Remember, Dex praised her for smashing her landlord's light, saying he admires the way she gets her way. Then again at dinner with the champagne toast--10 more years of getting her way. Then again at the end, Dex notices the fixed light while Lila smiles in his arms because...she got what she wanted. As far as the Deb/Lundy angle, how many people are with me that Lundy will eventually figure out Dex is the BHB and Dex will have no other choice but to kill Lundy to save himself and in the process harm Deb by killing her boyfriend/zen master/sugardaddy? Also we need more Masuka.

Holy cow awesome episode. Especially the Dex/Doakes storyline. Dexter headbutting him was just...it brought a certain excitement I should say.
Btw, Dex noticed the fixed light outside Lila's apartment. What was he thinking, and what does it signify? Was she lying about the wiring being broken? I don't know what it means...

I still think Lila will be framed for the Butcher. Why in the world would they ever get rid of Doakes? He is the second best thing on this show, and probably why they didn't use the storyline from book 2. Dex setting him up was perfect.
Team Lundy suspects a law enforcement angle, but they don't know it. There hasn't been anything that directly points to law enforcement.
I cannot understand why people keep thinking Lundy is on to Dex. There is no logical way for him to have latched onto Dex. They haven't shown us anything that would lead us there. (although I think it will happen, they better show us why !!)
It does look like they are setting up Deb, just like they did Dex last year. Dex turned on his brother to save Deb, Deb may have to choose Dex over Lundy. (is there no originality left in hollywood???)

The thing about the "Law Enforcement Background" angle is that you don't really need to have been in law enforcement to know how cops go about solving these kinds of cases. These days, pretty much everyone is privy to a lot of methods that used to be secret, thanks to crime-solving TV shows. Or do Law & Order type of shows not exist in the world of Dexter?

Holy crap. I can't believe what Dexter did to Doakes. He played it perfectly... except Doakes has every reason to go at him full force now. He's definitely getting too cocky for his own good.
Not sure how I feel about the Deb/Lundy thing. The episode did a decent job of explaining Debs feelings and what not... I'll see where it goes.
Lila is certainly psycho. Wow. I wonder what's next with her.

All I can see is that Dexter's world is crumbling around him. He has taken many chances in his ploy to hide what he has done. Breaking the Air conditioning, fire alarm, all the stuff with Stoaks...his world is falling and he isn't going to be able to hide himself much longer.

Lila is the best thing to enter into Dexter's life. Rita is boring! love the way Dex handled Stoakes. love the relationship brewing up with Deb n Lundy.
Best lines in this episode.
I hope the writers will develop a Batman n Robin with Dex n Lila. Lila gives this series a real sizzle!

@13: I loved that quote too.
@15: I disagree. I think what Lundy was referring to (about the manifesto hitting all the major themes that law enforcement usually thinks of is not a lay-person thing that you could really get from the L&Os or CSIs.
I guess I missed the polling on Deb and Lundy, but I would have voted yes. Saw it coming. He sees her truly and respects her. And she does him too. Sure there is plaque in his arteries, and she's behaving like a high school girl, but that's what's lovely about their relationship. They both know it is going to be wierd, but they really have earnest feelings for each other and it was inevitable.
This episode should have been called Bad dEXTER and Bad News Lila. I don't know why people still like her; she sizzles, yea, because she is as dangerous as wildfire. I am fine with guess that she probably never had a meth addiction (some ppl had that thought, right?) Her addiction is probably arsonry and getting her way. So she went to the nearest AA/NA meeting to catch the next sucker.
Rita, on the other hand, is not psycho and is growing an enviable amount of backbone. And her kids are great. And Dexter is a better person with them. As I said before, he needed Lila to reconcile him with himself, but he doesn't need her as a leach, cuz she is going to bleed him dry. Does anyone think Rita might end up killing Lila in some sort of defense of her person or of her kids or Dexter. Clearly, Lila is psycho and doesn't want to share, and she might be willing to hurt the ex if she feels they are in her way. (Honestly, where do the MOrgan kids get some of their mates)?
Bad Dexter because what he did to Doakes was so ingenious. I am starting to see how far he will go to get Doakes (sacrificing an innocent stepfather), and I am starting to see that he most definitely might frame the overzealous Doakes for the BHB killings. I really enjoyed how Dexter conned Doakes into attacking him, and I believe I am going to enjoy the way by which he sets Doakes up, though Dex has to be careful, not cocky - Doakes is one very, very dogged, smart cop. It won't be easy.

I resented the way Doakes preyed on Dexter. While he's saying there's something wrong about Dexter, he should look in the mirror to see the unrepentent, special ops killer that HE is. I loved it when Dexter provoked him. My first thoughts were that perhaps he can pin those serial killings on Doakes.
At first, when Dexter got involved with Lila, I was happy for him. He seemed that her opening up her secret to him was a bond. An understanding that they were more in tune with each other. But she has proven to be a needy woman also. A woman that goes psycho to get her way. Now we know that Dexter has to look out for her.
Rita was a good woman who gave Dexter stability with her children and striving to live a decent life. Dexter can always look up to her, but he will always have to shield her from his fatal flaw.
Deb is no exception. I sort of cringe when her character is on, being that she is a gullible, shallow person who doesn't have the natural instinct to take care of herself, let alone a sense about people that a law enforcement officer would cultivate. She was totally manipulated by Dexter's brother, she falls for the gym guy to get laid, calling him her boyfriend after a brief period, and now she's fallen for the FBI agent that despite his age, is emotionally retarded.
All of the women on Dexter are weak.
