When Moonlight first aired, TV fans couldn't help themselves but to compare the series with Angel. Both series have a good looking vampire as its lead and said main character is an investigator. At first glance, Moonlight's lead vampire, Mick St. John, may sound like an Angel clone. Let's compare, shall we?- Both men wear dark clothes, including some sort of jacket. Angel opts for slightly loose shirts but that still highlight his muscles (for the ladies' pleasure). As for Mick, he keeps wearing muscle shirts (for the ladies' pleasure as well!). However, Mick's choice of shirts make it harder to take him seriously as a PI.
- Angel is a great warrior. Not only is he a great combatant but most of the time he is fighting enemies unarmed. Mick is still a newbie in that area. Yes, he is able to kick some behinds but Beth has to save him most of the time! If Mick (in the shape he is right now) had to fight Angel, the latter would win hands down! Even Moonlight's Josef would win against Mick. Then again, if Mick fought Angel as he was a few decades after being turned, maybe the battle would last a little longer but I would still put my money on Angel.
- Mick is not over the fact that his wife turned him on his wedding day. This prevents him from hooking up with anyone, including Beth. The same could almost be said for Angel who was turned by Darla way back when. However, the main difference is that Mick wasn't expecting at all to be turned and was not in the state of mind to become a vampire. When Angel was turned, he was looking for more excitement in his life, thus was more prone to accepting his new path.
- Both are tormented by their vampire side. Angel is almost another person when in vampire mode (aka Angelus). Since Mick never fully embraced his vampire side, he is still pretty much himself when in vampire mode.
- Both understand the danger they bring to the people surrounding them and try to keep boundaries with everyone.
- Both are pro-human and don't want to feed on them. But if Angel didn't have his soul, he would probably be feeding on humans.
- Both are intelligent, capable investigators and hot!
I surely forgot tons of pros and cons for both vampires. If so, post below to help us decide who is the best TV vampire between Angel and Mick St. John. Of course, since I know Angel best, I'm leaning towards him winning this battle. However, Mick is a promising character.
Thanks to Jen Creer, our Moonlight reviewer here at TV Squad, for her insight.

How about a compromise: Let's take Angelus + Early Angel and add Mick. Scrumptous.

angelus is not angel's vampire side, angelus is angel without his soul. big difference. angel vamps out a lot when fighting but he is always still angel.
either way angel would destroy mick in every way. their only even ground is in gorgeous female leads.

Oh man, Moonlight is the definition of a guilty pleasure to me. I'll never admit I watch it to anyone. It's not great, kind of campy, overly dramatic sometimes, but enjoyable. I have a weak spot for blood drinkers.

Geez anyone remember the early plot line with Angel and Detective Kate Lockley, played by Elisabeth Röhm. Maybe its the fact that Sophia Myles and her look a like, but thats what I think about when I watch the show. That whole arc on Angel was brilliant and really showed the dangers of inviting a vampire into your life, even one of the "good ones" is still a bad idea.
I know where supposed to be coming up with pros and cons. The major con to even compare the two, only way to watch Moonlight is to try to forget about Angel.
PRO: Angel can't go out in the daylight
CON: Mick can.
I know there trying to redefine the genre for their own purposes, but Mick gets more sun than Hasselhoff in re-rens, and it feels like a complete violation of the vampire mythos.
PRO: Angel is old.
CON: Mick is'nt
Old people are creepy, the older the creepier. If your gonna do a vampire show, either have an old vampire or a recently turned one, not this middle aged, middle of the ground nonsense.
PRO: Angel killed people
---: Mick, don't know yet.
Well technically Angelus did, but killed a ton of people, so at least his redemption and self imposed penance means something. Why does Mick do what he does is it to make up for past crimes? Time will tell I guess.
PRO: Angel everything.
CON: Mick some things.
Everything about Angel was the best. Mick is at best okay,

Angel had gorgeous hair.
Mick's mop could use a nice brushing every now and then.

Angel could become truly evil; Mick St. John can only become vaguely amoral.
Angel had sex with Buffy, Darla, and Eve. Mick has had sex with Coraline.

Only I also included Nick Knight :)

Don't know which I'd pick if the two vampires were on equal footing. Angel, as we knew him, was nearly 300 years old, and Mick is only a newbie. I adored ATS, but am also enjoying the relative normalcy (if such could be said of a vampire show!) of Moonlight after ATS's apocalyptic fights with demons and ultimate evil. I guess if we're taking them both in the "now," Angel wins. He's got too much experience to loose against someone so young. But give Mick a couple hundred years, and all beats are off!

I must say that I loved Angel, but I also REALLY like this show. The two may run parallel in some areas, but they are their own two stories and characters. I think the fact that Mick can get his butt kicked makes all the more human and far more enjoyable. As we learned last night -- which was another great episode -- he hasn't embraced the fact that he is a vampire.
Speaking of Last night's episode, it did take a turn towards the other vamp show Forever Night. I wasn't an avid viewer, but I do know he was looking for a way to become human, and that little story presented itself in a far more interesting light last night. It was a very interesting turn with Coraline's story and I very much want to see this play out. Pick it up CBS

i haven't seen angel, so i really can't validly compare the two. based on what people are saying of angel, he'd probably be able to take mick in a fight. especially since in moonlight, mick seems to be able to dispose of humans pretty easily, he hasn't had that great of a go fighting w/ other vampires. he's always managed to be victorious in the end, but...you know...the show's about him so i would expect that.
comparing on looks alone? mick st. john wins for me....very easily.

Moonlight is the best new show on television. Truthfully, I watched Angel for the first season, then it got too boring for me. I loved Buffy, but I just never got into Angel... it somehow lost it's luster. Moonlight is the only show I get excited about watching... WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT??? Thank you CBS for *finally* giving me a reason to tune in to your network! MOONLIGHT IS *AMAZING*!!!

I was a big fan of Angel, almost obsessed. I was a faithful viewer even when it fizzled out over the last couple of seasons. Now, I have watched every single episode of Moonlight, and I fell in love with the show in the first minute. It is absolutely AMAZING! I enjoy it MORE than I enjoyed Angel. Anyone who has seen all the Moonlight episodes, and knows what they're talking about, can agree that Moonlight is just as good as Angel was. Good actors, good story, and chemistry between Mick and Beth... WOW! That's all I can say, really. People just need to tune in and give it a try before knocking it down. If I hadn't given Angel a chance, I would've missed out on all the action! Don't miss out on all the action of Moonlight!

Moonlight is ok, and it is getting better, but don't go crazy now, and start putting it in the same league as Angel. At the best, Moonlight might be near the quality of Angel at it's very worst, and even when it was in that state, it had a couple spectacular episodes that are better than this show could ever dream of being.
Enjoy this show for what it is, a guilty pleasure, and don't start putting it on a pedestal that it doesn't deserve to be on. I promise you, you will be disappointed, if you have an ounce of taste.
And everybody knows the best new show is Life (followed closely by Journeyman, Chuck, and Pushing Daisies).

I watched Angel for awhile, but was never obsessed with the show. Can't say that about Moonlight. In the short time its been on the air, it has taken me hostage. LOL I love Mick and Beth's friendship/respect/love for one another.

I never really watched Angel that much, but I love Moonlight. It is a bit different, but is it really fair to compare these two characters at such an early stage in Moonlight? Angel had the history of Buffy, and then Angel for fans to get to know him. Moonlight is only on it's 7th episode. Mick hasn't had the time to evolve as much as Angel has, not to mention their vampiric ages. Mick is still in his early years as a vampire...give him a little time! And Mick is definetly HOT! How could you not love that smile? ;0)
