I have to admit that I don't really get why so many Heroes fans are up in arms about this second season. I've heard everything from "sophomore slump" to "it has jumped the shark" to "it sucks!" and I don't agree with any of those viewpoints.
Has it been the intense, oh-my-God look how this episode ended in another cliffhanger thrill ride of the first season? No, but I think that's more a case of how the last season ended and how they had to set up this new season, with new plots and new heroes and old heroes in new situations. And I think that the show really kicked into gear with Monday's fantastic installment.
But Tim Kring actually understands fans fears. He called Entertainment Weekly from the picket line (he says it's really odd that he's picketing his own show!) and says that they made a mistake with the pacing of the show this season, new cast members weren't introduced correctly, the Claire/West love thing isn't really working, the save the world plot took too long to explain, and that Hiro was in Japan too long (OK, that last one I really do agree with - thank God he and Kensei are in the present now).
I think it's interesting how TV is now, where the creator and producer of a TV show can actually apologize to fans about the way a season is going. That never used to happen. Now if Kring could just get rid of the twins with the bleeding eyes...

Hopefully Sylar will kill them both and we can just move on and forget they were ever introduced.

Kring sounds like a decent guy and it's refreshing to know he can see the show in the way fans see it.
I thought the first few episodes were a little slow and a lot like a rehash of the first season, but in my mind it never came close to a "sophomore sucking the jumping shark slump". The last couple of episodes have completely rocked and reminded my of why I fell in love with the series in the first place.
If we could have the wonder twins kill West just before Gabriel/Sylar kills them that would be fantastic, especially if it happens really soon. Speaking of happening really soon: I hope the writers get fair compensation really soon so we don't have to worry about getting an abbreviated season of Heroes, or any other show.

They're like the Nikki and Paulo of Heroes. Introduced without warning and everyone hates them.

Wow, that's impressive. I love that Kring sees the problems in the show. And, Bob, if you're still confused as to what the complaints are about, try reading Alan Sepinwall, the TV critic for the Star-Ledger. He's got a great column about it, and his coverage of each of the episodes this far has been extremely insightful: http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/search/label/Heroes

My question is- why didn't Kring see this in the first place as the scripts were being developed and the read throughs were going on?
He needs to hire better writers with a grasp of the Comic Book Hero mythos, plain and simple.
It's in a big slump. Those who don't see that are just fooling themselves with fanboy fanaticism.

Wow LRS62, I guess only you can have an opinion on how a show is great to know. What should I think about next week's episode? While it may have started off slow the last 2 episodes have kick major ass!

I am one of those that rolled my eyes at a number of scenes during the show, thinking out aloud why the wonder twins are there, why Hiro is in Japan from the moment they reveled Kensi to be a westerner I figured he is pulling strings in the present, they didnt need 5 episodes to stretch that out, added to the fact that they havnt messed up space & time with all the crap Hiro did back in Japan. But for Kring to listen to fanboys and apologize is real cool of him.
I saw him on G4 in their heroes after show and was thinking why hasnt any of the fanboys called him out on some of the story lines, instead they were in awe and full of stupid questions.
so to end Tim Kring Apology accepted. now if you will sir kill the wonder twins.

Not really. Well yes, but atleast Paulo (or is it Paolo?) and Nikki were just sidekicks to the main cast save for their last episode where as in the first couple episodes M and A were on their own taking away from time with the rest of the characters.

Good for Tim Kring for acknowledging that there are problems (issues?) with the show and the pacing. I'm sure there are other producers who think the same thing but don't dare say it aloud for fear of further alienating their audience. I think it's just the opposite, however.

Support the strike in your own way. Refuse to watch any of the reality crap that the network are going to shove down our throats by January.

I think the one thing that affected the story telling early on was the fact that there just seemed like this unhealthy desire to put everyone in every episode. So were starting off with about 6 different story lines, and we only get to see maybe 5 or 10 minutes of each a week. That just doesnt seem to work and makes everything as a whole seem disjointed. I may be mistaken, but I dont remember it being that way last season. Take two or three storylines and fill up a good hour of tv with them, which is what were getting to now that people are starting to come together.

Well...because honestly I'm pretty sure he doesn't see it now.
Look, when your show has fallen 26% from its season 1 finale and a staggering 35% from its series high you apologize to the fans and hope you can draw them back. Especially when you are losing an average of 4% of that audience per week (the show lost 620,000 viewers in the last week alone)
At that point you beg regardless of whether you believe they viewers are justified in their opinion of the show. Especially when you're looking at the aftermath of a strike on top of the above numbers. The networks lost an average of 10% of their viewers after the last writers strike. If the same think happens here Heroes will be pulling in the same numbers as Chuck does now.
With all the hype that surrounded it at the beginning of the year I think people have put Heroes in the "safe" category in regards to cancellation but I don't think Tim Kring is so confident.

I actually dropped Heroes a couple of episodes ago. It was just boring. I realized that I couldn't care less what happened to these people. I have also become very anti-season-long-arc. Heroes moved faster than Lost, but not fast enough for me.
For me personally, these kinds of shows can't keep my attention for longer than one season. I dumped 24 in the second season, Lost just before the first season ended and now Heroes in the second season.

Last year eveyone pointed to Heros as being the way a show Lost should be done. But Heros was in it's first season and Lost was in it's third season. It's not easy to do great season year after year. Very few series are able to do that. I think Lost did a good job of recovering in it's 3rd season and had a great season finale. Maybe this will be the case for Heros too. If the writers strike is ever settled.

As a Paddy I want to scream every time someone opens their fake Irish gobs in the "Peter Petrelli and the Leprechauns" story-line. Could Kring not find one person with a real Cork accent?

I'm not quite sure what the problem is? Heroes is funny, exciting, heartwarming and one of the best shows on TV. Why are the viewers so whiney? I'm not sure what they want? If too many answers are given it causes an uproar. If too many questions are not answered it causes an uproar. TV is for fun, it's pure entertainment, an escape from reality (for the most part). So many people act like this is somehow disrupting their lives. The same thing with Lost, now we have to wait until February for the show because fans complained about the reruns, then they complained about the 2 mini-seasons. Now we have to wait. Maybe if these annoying "fans" would actually watch with an open mind and try, try, try to remember that this is just a TV show.

Does anyone else think West is a bad guy? My friends and I are convinced of it. Just too many coincidences between him and Claire for him to be all good. It'd be quite a big surprise too!

I think part of this year's problem (and I've actually enjoyed this season so far) is last season's unexpected, rousing success.
Heroes wasn't supposed to be a success, and therefore probably didn't suffer from a lot of network interference. This year, Heroes is expected to be the big ratings draw, and NBC might have demanded more of what worked last year.
YMMV.

I'll agree that season 2 started off slow. Why Hiro was in past-Japan for so long I don't know. And the twins just plain SUCK. I cringed each time I saw that they were to be featured on this week's episode. Claire/West I think is kinda cool, depending on what West does now that he knows HRG is Claire's Dad.
I'm also glad that Peter is out of Ireland and has his memory back. His girlfriend and her bad accent can stay in the future. This plot point also took too long.
The last couple of shows rocked and can't wait for more.
