Is it ever too early to talk about American Idol? The next season won't start airing until January, but the rounds of auditions have already swept the country. And, it seems there will be some changes to the format of the show. In an interview with The New York Post, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said things are being shaken up a bit this season. In the upcoming season, if a contestant plays a musical instrument, they will be allowed to show off their talents in addition to singing. That's a big change from the past.
There will be fewer mentors such as Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, etc., used as they took attention away from the contestants. Mentors will still be used, but it won't be a weekly practice such as in previous years. Instead, the show will focus more on the kids themselves -- what makes them tick, their backgrounds, and such. The Idol tour for the top ten this season may be combined with the top group from So You Think You Can Dance because, after all, singing and dancing go together.
Lythgoe said of the hopefuls, "There are three girls who are superb including one girl we saw three years ago who wasn't an American citizen [at that time]." He also was quoted as saying they've got one or two guys who are very good.
The Hollywood phase will be the testing ground for contestants who play musical instruments, but Lythgoe didn't give any set rules to how they'll go about it.

Oh god, the musical instrument idea is terrible.
he's one change they need to make, let the top 12 go on tour. I never understood why they weren't allowed to.
And the fewer the "famous" people the better. last season was out of control.

So you think you can dance, was great the best show I have ever been to. The only thing I didn't like was it had to end. I could watch Danny dance all night. Have you ever thought of putting out a DVD of the show after the tour? I am not a kid I am 61 years old ond went to the show in St.Louis Mo. with my Grandchildren.

You know, they said they were shaking things up last season too - and look what happened. The worst season of AI, with the weakest winner ever shoved down our throats by the judges, producers and tween voters, who were the only ones left who cared after the best talent was eliminated.
Please, I wish they would stop monkeying with the formula that made the show so great. Forget the instruments. And, while its nice to get a little background about the contestants, no one really cares what makes them "tick." Just give us great singers and a great song list to choose from so we can make out choices. I really don't want to know what contestant #4's hometown thinks of him and what kind of volunteer spirit makes contestant #7 a super gal. Goody. Just what AI needs. Another reason to vote for the contestant who knows how to organize a literacy volunteer pep rally and has fab hair and clothes and a big, toothy smile - but blows the notes.
Please, no repeats like last year.
Just shut up and sing.

On Canadian Idol they were allowed instruments this year and it was a good change. They didn't play them every week though and it was an interesting change.

The best change they could make is taking this waste of time show off the air. They could put much better stuff on in place of it!

Well, these changes are NOT what many of us were hoping for. They need to change the voting system as well.
We'll just have to wait and see how this season turns out.

Darren, you are an idiot. Let's take the number one show on TV off the air in the middle of a writers strike! That makes sense!

I think they need to limit the number of times a person can vote like they do for Dancing with the Stars.

Change the voting, take the auditions off the air where some contestants get more airtime than others and pick the best singing talents from the audition process not the best personalities, background stories or most telegenic.
It is much easier to give someone a new image and teach showmanship than it is to teach singing talent.

I applaud this move. Many of our popular singers play instruments, why shouldn't the AI contestants? For some multi-faceted musicians, the voice is just one part of the total package. We need to be able to see, and they need us to see, the whole range of their talent.

This is important but not related strictly to A.I.
How can I reach Nigel Lythcoe via email . Lythcoe is a family name on my Fathers side. So unusual I think we may be related in some way. Please respond to VivP1@aol.com

While hearing/watching AI contestents play musical instruments might be diversionary, where will it stop? Will AI add dancing technique next? While some play instruments, many don't. Some are great dancers and have great moves, while others don't. Adding in these other elements could be a detriment to someone with an excellent voice that has two left feet or doesn't know the difference between a saxaphone and a clarinet. After all, you can't tell if the artist is playing an instrument or swaying to the beat when you listen to a song on the radio. It's the voice that counts the most.
Here is an idea....when the contestents are down to 12, AI should have a Bonus show in which the contestent can choose their own song in their own style and can showcase themselves with playing an instrument or some self choreographed dance moves. It's a one shot opportunity to show the audience all.
I agree with others that have commented against the need to know the total background or community spirit of a contestent. AI should not be soliciting the hero or sympathy vote...this is a singing contest is it not? Maybe the name should be changed to American Hero Who Can Sing, Dance, Play Piano and Takes in Stray Puppies Idol. AHWCSDPPTSPI...how's that for an acronym?

I think the best thing they can do is change the voting process. The way it is set up now, contestants with true talent, like Melinda Dolittle didnt stand a chance and someone as clearly out of his league as Sanjaya makes his way back to the stage week and painful week. I was actually embarrassed for him, he was the talk of the country but also the laughing stock. That was horrible to do that to that kid. They need to almost do it like Dancing with the stars, where they find panel of professional singers and combine the vote with America. I think having the 3 Stooges decide who gets to be the top contestants in the competition is unfair. None are truly singers, yes even Paula.

Change the voting. If there can only be one call per phone you would get an honest vote. I do not like the addtion of musical instuments. This is a singing contest.
