Are you a Mike person or a Joel person? And of course by Mike I mean Mike Tyson, and by Joel I mean singer/piano man Billy Joel.
OK, I'm actually talking about Mystery Science Theater 3000 hosts Mike Nelson and Joel Hodgson. Some people like Joel, who was the original kidnapped guy stuck on a ship with robots, but other people are loyal to Mike, the guy who took over for Joel when he left the series. I liked them both of course, though I think Mike grew on me a more. The commentary on The Brain That Wouldn't Die had me in tears.
Fans of Joel will be happy to know that he's coming back with a very MST3K-sounding project called Cinematic Titanic.
It's an online show where he'll comment on bad movies with fellow Misties Josh Weinstein (he was the first Tom Servo), Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl. There's nothing up at the site right now except a message from Joel but you can sign up for the newsletter and be notified when it goes live.Between this and Mike's RiffTrax, MST3K fans are very, very happy.

MST3k is thee best comedy show I've ever come across (and I've seen alot of 'em...The Simpsons coming in at a very close second.) and I agree that Joel was a bit better at hosting/riffing than Mike. Just a bit.
True, Josh Elvis Weinstein SUCKED HORRIBLY (sorry, Josh...) as Tom Servo & Dr. Erhardt, but I have a copy of the new Cinematic Titanic and he's ALOT better now.
But, Thank Torgo that Trace & Frank are back!! and of course, Mary Jo....
AND having Mike, Bill, & Kevin (my personal fave...as Tom Servo & Bobo & now Kevin!) doing Rifftrax and Film Crew!!
I'm soooo glad that Cinematic Titanic & Film Crew are around. I was getting REALLY tired of the crap on TV.
I'm in 'Bad Movie Heaven' once again!! Huzzahhhhh!!!

i just met the guys from cinematic titanic and they are great they signed my stuff and are very funny the wasp women is so funny and i love those guys, but comparing them to Mike,Kevin, and Bill is crazy because mike kevin and bill are just funnier in every way the delivery and the sound of there voice joel is very very very monotone while mike is just well amazing and not boring and for kevin he is servo the other guy just well you know and bill and trace are close i love them both equally pretty much but don't get me wrong i love CT it is so funny and i love MST way more after mike hosted and rifftrax and the film crew are amazing but anyway CT is great everyone should get it no matter what

I loved Joel with the passion of a thousand burning suns. Mike never really filled the void.
Sigh.

What really bugs me is that Joel for years has said he was done with MST and never needed to go back to it. Now that Mike and Kevin are being somewhat successful with RiffTrax and the Film Crew, Joel says "oh look, I can make money too"
While I am all for a free market and competition, your audience for this is already pretty small. Having multiple choices is not the best.
Also, Jim Mallon (producer on MST and voice of Gypsy) is ALSO doing something MST related.
Karen, you do know that Mike was head writer on the show during Joel's tenure right?

Karen, I'm with you! Joel will forever be on the Satellite of Love for me. I thought I gave Mike a very good try (probably an entire season) but the tone changed a bit too much for me to enjoy it as much. Akbar, yes, I knew Mike was head writer during the Joel years, but the difference for me wasn't the jokes, it was the interaction with the bots. Joel was more of a father figure while Mike was more of a silly buddy. It worked for a lot other fans, though.

As much as I liked Joel, Trace, TV's Frank, and Mary Jo, I hate Josh Weinstein. I hate his voices, I hate his delivery, and he almost makes me hate every episode of MST I stumble across on Shoutcast TV with him on it. If he's involved in a speaking role, I'll pass.

I loved MST3k when it starred (as they once put it) that sleepy-eyed guy, Joel. MST3K was his baby, and I just thought general the show was much more funnier. The first year or so with Mike was OK, but what really sucked is when they got rid of the two male mad scientists and did that whole "Planet of the Apes" kind of thing. Then it really went downhill. This new show should be pretty good, its not just Joel (MST3K's creator), but apparently much of the orignial MST3K gang, so I'll have to check this out.

Yes, Akbar, I do know Mike was the head writer in the Joel era. I just preferred Joel's persona and delivery, that dry and slightly melancholy mopey guy. Mike was too smirky for me.

I fell in love with this show during the Joel era but it wasn't until a Mike episode that I wrote "classic" on my tape. FYI It was the "Creeping Terror" Joel Hodgson lost a lot of my respect with his horrendous TV Wheel project (anyone remember that?) To be fair, the SCIFI Channel era episodes were spotty but heralded a couple of winners as well (eg: "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" and "The Incredibly Strange Creatures..."). With the Mike episodes we got to see a broader range of bad movies while Joel's seemed to dwell too much on the Godzilla thing.

I recenty went through nearly all of the episodes of MST3K and must say that, although I like both hosts, I prefer Joel a bit more because his sense of humor is a bit more off-the-wall. I also think is voice is funnier. I've listened to both Rifftrax and just seen the Cinematic Titanic film, and they are both funny, although I tend to like Rifftrax that have Mike paired with someone else. It seems silly to suggest that you can't have multiple projects from these people since their senses of humor are generally different and result in different riffs. That's like saying there's no point in having more than one stand-up comedian.

I personally have always felt that Joeland I would have more common ground for discussion if I were to actually meet him in some sort of low key social situation. However, I like Mike, and while Dr Forester had a magic chemistry with TV's Frank, I found the skits from Mary Jo Perl (sic) and the unpuppeted 'Bots fun for the most part. Writing counts, and for me the Riffing really is the most important part. That being said, I wish Joel would make the VCR virtual pet thing I heard about from someone who responded to a post of mine about the desirability of people who use Dale (the discussion on the board at the time was about Dale Evans, for some reason. I was trying to bring the discussion back to MST with a combination of sarcasm and surrealism, followed by a legitimate question). I think an animal who lived in my TV would be cool, and I still see VCR's everywhere.
