(S01E06) "You look the same." - Michael
"Clean living." - Dan
Journeyman is becoming a solid show driven by the characters' relationships. This week's episode will probably have fans start to speculate about the real reasons why Dan was sent back in time to save Steve and who Doctor Langley really is. The latter was not seen on the screen this week but he sure made an impact.
Langley's name popped up a few times in "Keepers." If we go with the theory that he is involved to some extent in Dan and Livia's time traveling, then could it be that he sent Dan back in time to save Steve because the latter was instrumental in developing the time travel technology (or whatever they use to send people back in time)? When Dan and Steve talked at the end of the episode, Steve was quick to say that time traveling didn't work and that he didn't really know about Langley. Yeah, right. The man seemed evasive and it looked like he was lying. I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of Steve.
The case of the week also highlighted the relationship between Dan and Jack. We already knew the two had a somewhat tense relationship in the present, mostly because Jack wondered if his brother was gambling again and partially because of the Jack/Katie/Dan triangle, but now we know things weren't stellar in the past either. I'm always amazed as to how the brothers fight one minute and bond the next. Just look at how Dan told his brother to back off and that he wasn't ready to tell him what was really going on, and then, hours later, Jack allowed Dan to drive the car. That's love! How heartbreaking was it to watch Dan overhear the past conversation between Jack and Katie? Going back in time to save the day is one thing, but learning more about your own life is another. Katie was the one who told Jack about Dan's proposal and that she was pregnant. She also admitted that she wasn't sure she loved Dan but thought she did. But the juiciest tidbit was probably the pregnancy scare Katie and Jack had. If Dan proposed after learning Katie was pregnant, would Jack have done the same if Katie had been pregnant back then? If so, the present would be totally different. I don't think Jack and Katie were having an affair once she hooked up with Dan. Jack acted like he truly cared for her happiness when he told her that his brother loved her. Livia seems to have accepted that Dan and Katie are now together. She was quite reassuring for Dan.
Other tidbits of interest:
- Dan dressed up as a sort of superhero for Halloween. Or was it a burglar? In any case, it's fitting since in a way he is a sort of superhero because he saves people every week and he is a burglar because he kept Dylan McLean's money.
- Speaking of McLean's money, since it is marked in the present, Dan can only use it in the past. But can he? Wouldn't it be marked as soon as it was reported stolen? So Dan could really only use it between the time the bills were made until they were marked. Part of me wants him to get in trouble for using it at the wrong time so we see how using the money would impact his traveling. Would he be a wanted man in the past?
- Even if we didn't see Dan's father this week, we witnessed how him leaving his family impacted a younger Dan.
- "You give me no reason to trust you." - Jack. He may not be my favorite character but Jack does have a point, Dan gave no reason to be trusted. He is an ex-gambler, vanishes at inopportune moments, claims he has vertigo, etc. It does sound fishy, no? Of course, we, the viewers, know better.
- Katie prepared her audition tape and says on camera that her husband is a time traveler. She wanted to erase it but as she was about to do so, Jack appeared. I think she didn't erase it and that she'll tape her official audition after it and then send the tape. The network will hear her saying that her husband is a time traveler and will either want to know more or will think she is crazy... or both!
- Livia said that she showed up in the past because Dan was off course. So is she a sort of guide and not a time traveler like Dan is? I am particularly interested to learn what she does with her spare time. A Livia-centric episode is in order!

Olivia said she traveled through time before and after she met Dan. I don't think they've said how they met. Maybe she's actually from the future and she's tracking Dan. She fell in love with him and found a way to keep from returning to her present so she could stay with him. Now she's appearing with him because her mission isn't over.

Your point about Livia not being a traveler but a guide is irrelevant. Dan is also a guide for the people's lives he intersects with in the past. He's a more subtle guide because he can't discuss the future with them but his role in their life is equivalent to Livia's in his.

This is my favorite new show of the season, and this was probably my favorite episode thus far (though I've enjoyed every one.) You pointed out the complex relationship between Dan and Jack that really played a big part tonight. I wonder how Jack will react when Dan's strange behavior continues even after Jack has 'OK'd' Dan.
The side story with Katie going back to work seems a little unimportant right now, I hope if they keep it up it will become important.
Steven saying time travel is impossible and then commenting on Dan's shoes says to me he either knows it (or suspects it) is possible, but can't say because it's crazy-talk. They should definately have him e a recurring character.
I'm loving this show and that they take it seriously. It would be nice if they'd give us a little more insight into Livia's role. She's vastly under-used so far.

First off let me say I really like the show, however last night I grew annoyed for the first time.
1) Olivia. I have grown tired of her popping up yet she never offers anything revelant to why, how, when ect to the time traveling. I would not mind if she was there once an episode, but I have grown tired of her there every time. In my opinion she offers nothing, so why is she there so much?
2) Jack, the brother! Last night I wanted to jump into the tv, smack him and tell him to stay out of their lives. When Dan confronted him about the bank account thing I was hoping he would punch him and tell him to buzz off. The brother sticking his nose in their business and relationship has gotten tiresome and very annoying to me each week. Seriously, does anyone have a sibling that is like this in their lives? Checking bank records, just opening the door and walking in the house, constant sticking his nose in their business, questioning where he is all the time! If one of my brothers or sisters were like this at their age my foot would be put somewhere! I realize its drama and what they feel is an added part to the present day story --- but since the wife believes him then they should just tell him to go away, distancing themselves from the problems he is creating (they have enough without a brother creating more for them).
Also, the brother is a cop but if he truely loves and cares about him I think in the real world he would cover up for him IF he thought he was quilty of something like say robbing a store? And if he did rob a store would he be dumb enough to put it in his bank account? And exactly how much money was taken from that robbery? I know he think he is gambling again thus he was checking on that to, but if he was would he be dumb enough to take it out of his account?
As for Steve, I also thought it was weird he would talk about time traveling, have written Langley yet in the present day interview he sort dismissed it and Dan let it go.
Another thing is that I found it hard to believe that Dan did not know he had "changed the past" when he told his boss at the end about the story?
As for the money. The wife is tempted, the son knows about it, Dan decides to just leave it in the closet (especially when he is being investigated as a suspect in a robbery) --- and the moneys is supposed to be marked!
I think they are not being very careful. Last week it was the kid alone with him when he jumped, this week the money issue and the wife's slip up on the camera that she "forgot" to delete.....
And on a personal note, I told my wife while watching it last night that since he had "interaction" with himself that why not go to his house and write himself a letter telling himself to place a bet on the next so many Superbowls, World Series, ect winners prior to the season when the odds were high. And then use the money to but stock in cell phone, computer, ect ect type companies (or real estate). Yes the Dan in the past would dismiss it at first until one of the teams won, then he would remember the tips. Or even a job related thing like an anonymous note about an upcoming event that he could pre-scoop the story (he is a reporter and a anonymous note would at least make him check it out thus he would become a famous name reporter). I know that is not what the story is about but I think most of us would do that so that we would be rich or famous later in life!

Well for sure Steven knows that Dan IS time traveling. He twigged it back in 2000 and the comment in the present "I like your shoes" was a quiet give away (not immediately picked up by Dan) that Steven knows and it's a "no no" to talk about for now.
When is Dan going to finish an article and get to keep his job?

Great episode, but I really miss the interaction between past-Dan and past-Livia we got in the first couple of episodes. It was fun seeing present-Dan sneek around his own apartment while he already there in the past, going back to talk to Livia at their engagement brunch, etc. Hopefully they get back to that a little more.

I'd like to see him fuck something up. Maybe in the season finale cliffhanger, he'll fuck up his case and totally change the present. Katie and Jack will still be together, his kid will have never been born, and he'll be alone and miserable and have to figure out how to fix it. They should at least play with the idea a little instead of having every episode wrapped up so neatly.

This was the best episode so far. Like Isabelle said, Journeyman is being driven by the characters' relationships-and that's the trademark of quality drama, especially in the Sci-fi genre. The problem with a lot of Sci-fi is that the writers often forget that it's not about the concept (time-traveling, aliens, superpowers), but the people who inhabit that "other" world. Actually, I think Journeyman has the opposite quality that's preventing it from gaining a bigger following-it's more of an interrelational, situational drama than most Sci-fi fans are used to. There's not much action-Journeyman is very zen-like.
For instance, the scene where Dan is eavesdropping on Katie and Jack when she tells Jack that she's pregnant and that Dan proposed-it wasn't a flashy scene, but it was charged and full of pain-and it gave us great insight into the twisted relationship between Dan, Katie, and Jack. It was like the viewer was a fly on the wall observing.

Dan should just talk to Livia in the past before she started traveling again to get her to give up info..because her present self won't

It's all about the shoes. Note how the disturbed brother said "it's always the shoes" - plural. He's come across time travelers before, not just Dan...
NBC, please, for the love of good tv, don't cancel this show.

It's funny, because there's pretty much no mention of what i thought was a big deal : consequences !!
Usually on this show, there's never any. Dan can do what he wants, the only people to get affected will be the ones he's send to help.
This time, while it was still linked to those people and their actions, consequences were affecting Dan's life as well, when he realized his previous conversations with his boss aren't those he remembers!
I thought it was a pretty big deal, and a good move in the right direction.
I for one don't like all the love triangles on the show, but I wonder about the last scene when Dan&Livia are spying on his brother and his wife, or his brother's ex : why did it happened ?? Usually, when he's done "fixing" the past, he back to his present.
But not this time : are his travels also meant to have him to learn about his past, was is Livia's will, ..??

Dan & Livia overhearing his brother and Katie: It really looks like there's a lot more to the triangle that has yet to be revealed. The look on her face when she's hugging Dan after telling him she'd do it again - compared to the look on her face when she was hugging Jack after telling him she was going to marry Jack - was something going on between them closer to the present ?

As for the consequences episode. That appears to be next week when Dan screws up and changes his future. That'll be interesting.
Steve is still working with Langley. Yes he's seen other travelers. It appears we will be begin having a secret agency running our timetravelers or atleast trying to manipulate them.
As far as having a crazy brother in your business. Yes this happens all the time. Jack's actions are out of love and being a cop makes things worse. He feels it is his duty to make sure that Dan doesn't hurt anyone not only because he is the older brother and still feels like he is raising him, but because he is still dedicated to Katie. Dan gave Katie something Jack couldn't and he probably regrets that. All these factors lead to his intrusions. He just wants to make sure Dan doesn't screw up.
It'll probably be a season or two before they finally tell Jack the truth and then he will change gears and try to help in other ways.
I'm really looking forward to next weeks episode.

After watching the interaction between Katie and Jack for the umptheen time, two things became clear: Katie and Jack were definitely still seeing each other; and Jack is the father of Katie's son - not Dan. Another one of those secrets she's been keeping from him. Her words to Jack(and the look she gives him when she says she's pregnant and hates to tell him that): "Dan's been going through so much - losing Livia a year and a half ago - and then there's you and me" - see what I mean ?

Is it just me, or did it sound like Langley was dead this week? All the references to him were past-tense. He was this, he was that, he did this and he did that.
