(S03E06) I was wondering when they would get around to conjugal visits. Quite frankly, when i found out Alyssa Milano was going to be on the show, conjugal visits were all I could think about.
This storyline is exactly what I was talking about in my last review. Earl doesn't need a list to do good things. He will always be karma's bitch. List or no list, he has to help people with their problems and now that he's locked up, he can spend more time helping his friends and family. Besides for all you list lovers, he now has a new one, so quit complaining.
Even at the ten minute mark, I was pleased with how many actual jokes were in this episode. Randy's "half-circle" joke, Earl's "wrote on a pillow case" joke and especially the "good for pillow" line. It's lines like these, the witty throw-away kind of comedy that shows how witty and clever a sitcom can be.
Then when I think about the other storyline with Joy's incontinence problem, I have to wonder. Is this an effort by the writers to even out the script with some solid toilet humor or am overthinking it because sometimes a pregnant woman crapping herself is funny? In any event, the truth is I am kind of over the animosity between Joy & Catalina. They don't really have any reason to be around each other so why don't they just avoid one another? I know Joy has an excuse with her being crazy and all but I thought Catalina was the nice one.
John Farley as Annie was a funny take on an old joke. I wasn't surprised when Earl's date turned out to be a dude, but I was surprised that he was so funny. How great would it be to see Annie continue to visit Earl just so they could spend time together?
If I have any criticism of this episode it would have to be that only a total nut job would throw away a naked picture of Alyssa Milano. That picture is as good as gold cigarettes in prison. I mean, I know Earl's trying to do good things, but c'mon.
All in all, I enjoyed this episode. I've never been a huge Rapaport fan (The War at Home sucked) but I think he's a welcome addition to the show. I know many of you don't enjoy the new direction of the show for a number of reasons but I think it's clear that you really only have two choices...get over it or stop watching.

It was pretty good, but I thought Alyssa Milano used to be much hotter. She looked tired, or deflated, or something. There's something different about her face, I can't quite put a finger on. Anyone?

It's called AGE...Alyssa Milano has been a hottie for almost 20 years, you'd look a little older too! For a woman her age, she is AMAZING. I'd let her arrest me any time in that hot little cop outfit.
As for the show itself, I really like this season, it's better than the last half of last season I think. Prison allows for a lot of new and fun storylines. This episode was good and entertaining, but I do agree that throwing away the picture of her boobs was foolish, he could have gotten a LOT for that in the can.

Am I crazy, or was there a little Eff You moment to the internet in Earl this week?
When Earl yells out "Hairl Loser," Alyssa raises her arm intentionally and gives him such a look before her line...if you aren't aware, Milano has the hairiest arms ever seen on a woman and refuses to do anything to remove the hair. Still manages to be smoking hot too.
So was I imagining that or did anyone else catch it?

Oh...duh, why I think that was an Eff You to the 'net - because online is where you find people complaining about Milano's arms. No one seems to give a crap in person. :)

One of the main reasons I enjoy the show are Catalina's lines in spanish. They're usually the writers talking directly to the audience.
In this case, about the poop story, when Catalina is yelling at Joy in spanish, she says, "if you were offended by these jokes, we're very sorry but we thought they were funny."
So even the writers were wondering how many people would enjoy a nice bit about a pregnant woman pooping herself.
(man, I wrote poop too many times)

Mr. Goebel, you misunderstand me. Last week, when I wrote my criticism of the "Creative Writing" episode of "Earl," I was careful to first point out that "Earl" is my favorite comedy that is currently on TV. That includes the prison episodes. I really am enjoying most of these episodes, even if the prison episodes are getting away from the list. I do prefer it when he sticks to the list storyline, but like that they're changing the show's direction, as long as they don't completely change it forever. I was happy to see Earl create a new, temporary list for while he's in prison this time, but I want to clarify that last week I was complaining about the specific episode, which I thought was a complete disaster -- entirely too self-indulgent, overwhelmingly unfunny, and completely lacking in substance in any way -- and NOT the prison storyline in general.
Now that I have perhaps explained myself better, I would like to say that this episode was a drastic improvement from the previous one. It was packed with good, funny jokes; it made good use of its characters; and it had a good plot that moved along until the show was over. It was a great episode, in my book.
I am not a Michael Rappaport fan either, but that's probably only because of "The War at Home," which sucked and should have been cancelled right away, not after two seasons of trash. However, I do like his character on "Earl" so far, and if anyone saw his appearance on "Talkshow with Spike Feresten," he was great.
So hopefully, "Earl" can keep it up. Unfortunately, there's no new episode until November 8th, which is too bad because it sounds really funny (see NBC website).
