Maria Shriver is leaving television news, and it's all Anna Nicole Smith's fault.
The ex-NBC newswoman and wife of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says that TV coverage of the death of Anna Nicole Smith (and all of the other stories that came from her death) led her to quit TV news forever. She made the comments during a speech at the Conference For Women. She says that watching the nonstop coverage made her realize that TV news had changed and she no longer wanted to be a part of it. She has plenty to do as First Lady anyway.
In other news, ABC newsman Bob Woodruff is returning to the network full-time. He has been covering news for both ABC World News and Nightline. Woodruff was badly injured last year (along with cameraman Doug Vogt) by an explosion in Iraq and wrote a book about his recovery.

Well I must admit I did not understand why Anna Nicole Smith's death was such big news for weeks and weeks.
She was a D-list celebrity, best known for marrying a real old rich guy who died shortly afterwards. The non-stop coverage of Anna Nicole was a joke.

Actually, if you look at the stories from 2003 they all say that she is taking an "unpaid leave of absence" or a "Sabbatical". When you get to the level of national news anchor I'm pretty sure you can take off how ever much time you want and still have your job (at least until you specify that you've quit)
