(S05E10) Tom opened the show with the promise that this week's performances would be the sexiest of the season. In what had to have been a shout-out to Edyta, he said "Let's not waste time or fabric." He was certainly right about showing skin. Several of the celebrities and the pros were scantily clad--lots of open shirts from the men and gravity-defying cleavage from the ladies. I caught a glimpse of Tori Spelling in the audience. Those West Beverly alumni are a tight-knit group, aren't they? We're at a good point in the show--very little dead weight, and a lot of the celebrities are showing considerable progress.
Marie Osmond and Jonathan Roberts (Samba) - Marie attributed her success last week to her singing background, and wanted to learn to sing with her body. She believed that the Samba suited her personality, and Jonathan thought that they had a chance at getting a 10 this week. We got an inside look at the Osmonds in concert, and Marie was nice enough to include Jonathan during her performance. What I love about these two is that they seem like they could genuinely be friends in real life. That factor adds a lot to their chemistry together.
The couple performed the Samba to "Crickets Sing for Anamaria," and did a respectable job. As usual, Marie's strength was in the performance aspect of the dance. Technically, it felt like the dance was missing something. There wasn't a single move that stood out in any particular way. The Samba is meant to be a fun dance, and they captured that tone beautifully, though. Heather Mills and Florence Henderson seemed to enjoy the performance.
Then it got scary. Just as Len began his critique, Marie passed out cold. There was this weird, awkward laughter from the audience initially (I think some people thought she was joking around), and then there was silence. It was actually a pretty terrifying moment, and the commercial break that followed was excruciatingly long. Fortunately, after the break Tom informed the audience that Marie was fine. She even had the spirit to say "oh, crap" when she came to. Thank goodness she was OK--I don't want to be the blogger that recaps the first Dancing With The Stars emergency room visit. The judges' comments were skipped over, and the couple's final score was 21 (7, 7, 7).
Jane Seymour and Tony Dovolani (Rumba) - Tony felt that the viewers would be surprised at Jane's ability to capture the sexy, romantic elements of the Rumba. Jane admitted that Tony's "tough love" approach to teaching infuriated her, but that she couldn't argue with the results. After Maksim, Tony looks like he would be the toughest instructor out of all of the professionals. Jane and Tony performed their Rumba to Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again." One of Jane's biggest advantages over the other ladies is her flexibility, so she's smart to show it off every week. The routine was sexy, but graceful at the same time.
Bruno thought the performance was steamy and sexy, but not trashy. He even said she looked like Edyta at times, which was huge praise. Carrie Ann acknowledged that Jane's body was amazing, and that she creates beautiful lines. However, she noticed that Jane continues to have problems with her turns. Len noted the level of class that Jane adds to each routine. Tom did a teaser for the results show, which will include a performance by Jennifer Lopez as well as a 1950's rock and roll dance number. Backstage, Tony joked that Jane is a female version of him. Score: 26 (8, 9, 9).
Mark Cuban and Kym Johnson (Samba) - Mark was convinced that he remained in the competition due to the fans' votes, and vowed to focus on pleasing the fans over the judges. Kym wanted to entertain as well, but maintained that the judges' scores still mattered. Their Samba had an I Dream of Jeannie theme, complete with the costumes and theme song from the show. The routine was cute, but a little heavy on the crowd-pleasing elements. Mark both looks and moves better than he did on the first week, though. I think his hip is what's holding him back. Overall, the dance was a bit slow and lacked polish. Since his fans saved him last week, ignoring the judges might have been the right move in this case.
Carrie Ann saw a lot of basic content, and liked the liveliness that Mark brought to the dance. She was still looking for more technique from him, unfortunately. Len enjoyed the emphasis on entertainment, but warned Kym to sort out Mark's feet. Bruno called the dance a geek's fantasy, but admitted that Mark will never be Fred Astaire. He believed that focusing on entertainment value was a good strategy for the couple. Score: 21 (7, 7, 7). Mark joked that he was hoping for a higher prime number and urged his fans to vote.
Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas (Rumba) - Mark explained that the Rumba is the vertical expression of one's horizontal desires. Sabrina wasn't comfortable with the vulnerability that she would have to show. To make Sabrina even less comfortable, Mark brought his mother (a champion dancer in her own right) in for some pointers. Sabrina mentioned that she and Mark have become quite close, and that they would bring their chemistry to the dance floor. This was a very different routine for the couple. Their Rumba ("Me and Mrs. Jones") was extremely slow and sexy, a departure from their usual high-energy showstoppers. Those two clearly have tons of chemistry to spare, and Sabrina gave a steamy, mature performance. I wasn't sure that she could convey the character of this kind of dance, and she did it perfectly. She's far more versatile than I thought.
Tom was ready with a "get a room" comment as soon as they made their way to the judges' table. Len told Sabrina that she had no weaknesses, but felt that some of the poses were over the top and drifted away from the basis of the dance. Bruno disagreed, praising Sabrina's musicality and her nuanced performance. Carrie Ann was blown away once again. She didn't make it easy for the couple though, pointing out that Sabrina was hitting the edges of her turns too hard. The judges obviously hold Sabrina to a higher standard than some of the other dancers, which could either help or hurt them in the long run. Score: 28 (9, 9, 10)
Jennie Garth and Derek Hough (Samba) - Jennie was feeling the pressure of getting a higher score last week. She wanted all of her future scores to be equally high or higher. Derek did his best to help Jennie find her diva side, and brought her to a hip hop choreographer. Jennie was a bit embarrassed initially, but eventually believed that she could shake it "like a salt shaker." Jennie looked even more at ease in her Samba (performed to Jamiroquai's "Cosmic Girl"), and I'm glad that her confidence keeps increasing each week. The character of the dance was exactly what it needed to be, but I spotted a few parts where Derek and Jennie were out of sync with one another. The camera cut to Tori Spelling in the front row, and I thought it was funny that her husband had to sit further back to make way for the stars of Samantha Who?.
Bruno noticed that Jennie "ran out of puff" midway through the performance. Carrie Ann also saw some stumbles, but acknowledged that it was a weird night. Jennie did look visibly upset when Marie was interviewed backstage. While she appreciated Jennie's attempts at sexiness, Carrie Ann wanted her to "mean it" more. Len disagreed with the other judges and thought it was far better than they had mentioned. I think Len might have a little crush on Jennie! We got another Marie update--Tom told us that the producers wanted Marie to rest up in her trailer, so she wasn't backstage at the moment. Score: 25 (8, 9, 8). Backstage, Derek promised more booty-shaking from Jennie if the couple advanced.
Helio Castroneves and Julianne Hough (Rumba) - Helio, ever the smiley-face, was worried about acting out the passionate character of the Rumba. In practices, Julianne had to keep reminding him to look serious and intense. Good luck with that, Julianne. Helio arrived at the dance studio in a sports car and took Julianne to the beach in order to enhance their chemistry together. Their Rumba was performed to Timbaland's "Apologize." It was strange to see Helio perform without his amazing smile. You could tell that he was really working hard to maintain a passionate look. Those efforts almost took away the natural effervescence that Helio brings to each routine.
Carrie Ann could tell that Helio was "in the zone," but was dissatisfied with the routine. She didn't see any chemistry between the couple and thought that the lines were awkward. Len said that he's seen more romance at the dentist, and called the performance "mechanical." Bruno agreed with his fellow judges, and thought that Helio looked like he was in pain. I thought these criticisms were extreme, but I had some of the same problems with this dance. Score: 23 (8, 7, 8). Is Helio in trouble here? He's had a couple of off weeks, and I don't think he can afford any more now that the competition is getting tougher.
Melanie Brown and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (Samba) - Melanie was devastated after landing in the bottom two last week, and held an emergency rehearsal with Maks after Tuesday's show. To make matters worse, Mel caught a cold and had to travel to London. Maks got to meet the Spice Girls, and Ginger Spice pretended not to know who he was, which was awesome. Someone needs to take Maksim down a peg. I was disappointed that Posh didn't say much. The couple performed to "Spice Up Your Life" (by guess who?), and proved that they didn't belong in the bottom two. Their Samba had all of Mel's energy and personality, and included some difficult-looking moves.
Len thought Melanie's Samba was fantastic. Bruno dubbed her Samba the best of the night. Carrie Ann called it her favorite of all of the couple's performances. Backstage, Melanie mentioned that she's still sick, and that Maks actually got along well with the other Spice Girls. Score: 29 (10, 9, 10). This was a great comeback to watch. I was shocked when Mel and Maks were in the bottom two, and they had better not be there this week.
Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska (Rumba) - Cameron was still pleased with his "breakthrough dance" last week. He knew he had to focus on chemistry and tension in his Rumba, and brought in soap star Susan Lucci to impart some wisdom. He wanted the Rumba to be so steamy that the judges would need a shower when it was over. Based on that standard, the dance was a complete success. Cameron and Edyta's performance ("I've Got to See You Again") was seriously hot, and they looked incredible as a couple. Tons of well-deserved hoots and hollers came from the audience.
Bruno praised Cameron's hard work and improvement, and added, "Lock up your daughters." Carrie Ann thought the couple aced the chemistry aspect of the dance, but saw a lift. Again with that? Carrie Ann needs to move on from the whole lift thing. The dancers obviously aren't doing it intentionally. Len asked Cameron to button his shirt up, and said that Cameron's performance was just as strong as last week's. He also told Edyta to stop doing one-legged spins. Tom thought that Len was just jealous of Cameron. Score: 26 (8, 9, 9). Samantha got in a good joke when she asked Cameron if it was "good for him." She gets one clever remark a year, folks. Hope you enjoyed it.
Mel and Maks took their rightful place at the top of the leaderboard this week, with Marie and Mark tied for last place. There's no way that Marie will get kicked off the show on the week that she faints, so I'm guessing that Mark will be sent home.

To me, the first three dances weren't so great. It didn't really impress me. But as soon as Sabrina took the stage, things got good.
I was really surprised and concerned when Marie collapsed. At first I wasn't sure if she was joking or not. The crew did a good job cutting to commercials though.
I think I recall Marie stating she has anxiety attacks from time to time and she didn't look 100% during her dance.
I did saw a very concerned face on Jennie when the show resumed. Marie's scores were appropriate, in my opinion. Which is a shame because I really thought she could ace this fun dance.
In regards to Jane, I'm never surprised at how sexy she can be. I don't care if she's 58. Her body is still damn nice. She's forever graceful, but has she ever done any lively dances? I don't remember. Can she do those?
Mark... I actually like the guy. Yeah, he sucks, but like John Ratzenberg, he sincerely puts effort into his dance and has fun with it. Which makes him fun to watch. Nonetheless, like you, I see him going next. Him or Marie...
Sabrina was good as always. Which is nice but that means she's not as interesting. I mean she doesn't seem to have any room for growth as an amateur dancer. She's already good and can pull off all kinds of dances.
Whereas Jennie, who started off stiff and unsure, and crashed, got progressively better each time. Its FUN to watch her grow. Plus she's so cute. Its like she never aged since 90210. She's actually my favorite female.
And Helio is my favorite male. I agree, in this dance, it was hard for happy Helio be naturally sensual and passionate. Even WITH the ever beautiful and cute and spunky Julianne as his partner. I felt the criticisms were too harsh. And the segment with his sports car was cool but at the same time, really cheesy. Handsome Latino picking up a young blond with exotic sports car? C'mon...
Mel B is so fun to watch. I like her. And it was nice to see her back on her game. Though I didn't think she ever left... Seeing Posh Spice's designed costume is OK. And where's Sporty Spice? And OMG, Baby Spice no longer looks cute, ew.
Cameron, I'm liking him. I like his newfound passion to do awesome things. And I think after that dance, Edyta wants to have his babies. Did you see Cameron's shirt during training? "Camyta." lol.

I could see that Marie was hyperventilating after her dance, she was really giddy, and she looked like she was getting impatient during Len's remarks. She looked as if she wanted to run out of the room. I felt so bad when she fainted. Everyone felt bad! She's been America's Sweetheart forever. I didn't like her when she was a judge on that "Duets" show but I have grown to like her a lot on "Dancing".
I agree that watching Jennie and Cameron is very entertaining since they have both improved so much from the first weeks of competition. Sabrina is always good, so she really has to blow the roof off the joint. I felt that the criticism of Helio and Juliane was too harsh, as well. Remember last year she and Apolo received the exact same criticism from the judges. I remember Len saying they had no chemistry and it wasn't romantic. And they were even rumored to be dating in real life. So, maybe the judges expect Juliane's partners to be all over her. Also, both Apolo and Helio are athletes, but Cameron is an actor (I don't know if he's any good, but he's still an actor) so he had the advantage there. He's always faking it for a living!
Mel B. was awesome. I love Maks, no matter how obnoxious he can be. They always pair him with the toughest gals, Willa Ford, Leila Ali and now Mel B. I would really like to see Maks go far in the competition. I feel bad for Edyta, too, always a bridesmaid. It would be nice to see some brides and grooms!

Marie's fainting spell was very scary. I thought she was kidding around at first too (one blogger called the audience "unsympathetic" and made it sound like everyone was laughing), but when Jonathan and Tom kneeled down everyone knew it was no joke. And I also noticed the commercials were extremely longer than usual. I'm glad Marie was fine and made it back on her feet. I even gave her an extra vote tonight! I thought the judges were harsh on Helio, but it was Mark's best dance ever - he was actually light on his feet this week! Still, it's time for him to go. Albert should still be there!

I just love this show this season. I am a little worried about Helio - the last few weeks have not been good. I would like to see him go all the way! Also, what's up with Edyta? She barely wears any clothes which is very distracting. That "dress" was ridiculous.

The Marie collapse was pretty scary and I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought the commercial break was interminably long. At first, I thought she was goofing around and pretending to faint but was dismayed to find that she really collapsed. Thank goodness she's okay now.
Has anyone noticed last week and this week that Helio & Julianne's vibe seems a little weird? I get the feeling sometimes that she's trying really hard to like him (as a person, not romantically) and she's trying hard to seem like she likes him but it winds up looking strained. There's something that's 'off' there and I can't quite put my finger on it. Whatever it is, I think maybe the judges have picked up on it, as they haven't been as enthused about their last two performances.
I agree...I think Len has a crush on Jennie. I also agree that Carrie Ann needs to let the lift obsession die.

Mel & Maks were AWESOME!!!! I was stunned that they were in the bottom two last week & Mark wasn't. I said in the blog that they would come back this with something great and they didn't disappoint. Despite her real-life "Spice Girls work", flying to London & back and both being sick, they came out and sold a great performance. Why didn't Len give M&M a 10??????

We had learned from Cheryl Burke a few weeks ago (in a clip, or maybe on a talk show appearance) that DWTS has always had a "go to commercial break immediately" plan for one and only one circumstance: a dancer is injured. When it became clear Marie had fainted, I watched for this, and sure enough, Tom says "let's go to a commercial" and inexplicably, we hear the director or a producer say "go to break" (or somesuch). The camera then tilts up to the ceiling so we can't see what's going on, and after 10 awkward seconds, we finally get to commercials. The commercial break was approximately 5 minutes by my reckoning. The last half were exclusively ABC promos -- one after the other for what seemed like every ABC show on the schedule. Finally they came back, and as the old maxim goes, "the show must go on!".
I'm glad Marie is ok, but sadly for her, I think this is the end of the line. She and Mark will be in the bottom two, and I think this is it for Marie Osmond.

Question: Why were Helio and Julianne assigned the Rumba? Shouldn't they have been assigned a Samba since they did a waltz last week?
Honestly, I think the judges have psyched Helio out...by giving him scores lower than he deserved. I have the sense he would have done a great Samba since it does not require the intimacy of the Rumba, a dance that made him feel awkward with the young Julianne, I think. If Helio were rated on the same scale as Jane and Mel, he would have had three nines.
Alas, the judges are doing everything possible to keep Mel in...whatever the dance, she spends many seconds of her allotted time doing something else than the required steps.
I saw Marie hyperventilating before she fainted...the producers may encourage her to go home if she is in physical danger, so the results tonight could be interesting.
Finally, Jennie Garth mentioned the fires and others alluded to the strangeness of the night, so I do believe (and would it not be expected?) that the calamities in the region are weighing on all...

Well, the worst dancers have gone home. I would like to say that it is a real competition now, but I can't. They seem to need a woman to win this year. So they are willing to compromise fairness to have 3 women who have previous dance experience. Jane had ballet lessons until she was 16 years old, of course she has graceful moves. Mel used dance moves when she was on stage with the Spice Girls. And last but certainly not least, Sabrina danced on stage when she was a Chetah girl. Do the producers not check this out prior to booking these people? It certainly is NOT fair to the other competitors. It is time that the judges took their dancing experience into account and start to adjust their scores downward based on their experience.
I don't think that Jane deserved the score she received. Yes, from the back she looked like Edyta, but the moves were certainly not Edyta. This is a dancing competition not a look a like competition.
Come on judges, take off some points for the ones with the dance experience or get rid of them all together. Make it a real competition without ringers like Fatone, Lopez and the group you have this year.

Justmymusings, did you think the show was stacking the deck for men when they had Drew Lachey, a former boy bander on the show ( he became champion). Mel B. is a member of a girl group. How is that different? Joey Fatone made it to the finals last year and he was in a boy band, NSync, too. And Joey McIntyre had been in a boy band as well and that showed in his performances. I don't remember people doing too much whining that Laila Ali and Apollo had to compete against someone with obvious dance training. It's about time they got more women who had the same skills. Laila Ali was a BOXER. She held her own, but Joey the entertainer did have an advantage on the show.
