(S02E04) A lot of commenters mentioned the change in Rita this season. I think it's understandable given what she went through with Paul, and then him dying in prison and her kids being affected so much. I think she maybe be finding she needs to keep her guard up more than ever now, to make sure she's doesn't make the same mistake again.
Lila's artwork definitely supports several theories. She's either a murderer herself, a human-flesh eating addict, an S&M weirdo or a vampire. I mean, god, she practically looked like she was salivating when she was in the morgue. It seems too easy that she'd be eventually accused of being the Bay Harbor Butcher, but I really hope it's not this transparent so early in the season.
Speaking of Lila, I love that they're continuing to be faithful to Dexter being so utterly uninterested in the opposite sex, or any sex for that matter. He's using Lila as a sponsor, but her hugs and kisses mean nothing to him; they just strike him as "odd." Again, right from the books.
Dexter's making himself look more and more guilty as the case against him builds, even though his colleagues don't suspect a thing. It's when things start pointing in his direction that these moments will stand out.
The Doakes storyline was interesting, though at first seemed a bit distracting from the Dexter story. But is it, really? Maybe this was an incident that shows Doakes would better understand why Dexter does what he does, if he should ever discover Dexter's secret. Doakes actually seems like the one person on the show who would understand Dexter's "addiction" even maybe a little bit.
The flashback sequences to Dexter's youth are always interesting. In this episode it was particularly chilling when he was answering the complete opposite of what he was thinking to the behaviorist's questions. "Have you ever killed an animal?" "No. Never."
Finally the Pascal storyline seems to be gone. However, it was definitely a conclusion that made it worth watching go down for the past few episodes.
I love that Dexter couldn't believe that Vince would be the one person to bring him down. But what with those rocks? How could Dexter possibly throw everyone off his sent once they get to his marina? Finally I'm all caught up on early episodes and I'll have to find out with the rest of you.
Quote of the episode:
Rita: Y'know I hope they catch him today. And I'm not a violent person, but I hope they hurt him ... Have a good day.
Dexter (thinking): Make up your mind.

Keep in mind, Dexter is not in a generic "addiction" group, he's in Narcotics Anonymous. Narcotics meaning painkillers like heroin, oxycodone, hydrocodone (vicodin), etc. If House were forced to go to a 12-step it would be NA. When Lila asks him what his addiction is, she is referring to what drug he uses. She asked what he was using at one point. Dexter "admitted" to using heroin in front of the group (with "NA" on the front of the podium) because that's what he admitted to using to Rita (because it's what he killed Paul with).
While Lila could be there for any sort of reason (see, e.g., Fight Club), if she has an addiction it's to narcotics, otherwise she'd be at a different 12-step program (S&M anonymous).
On a different note, I kept thinking that with the heat wave, Dexter's air conditioner would break and Deb would have someone over to fix it, or try to screw with it herself, and almost find Dexter's hidden stash of victim blood samples (and Dexter would walk in on her and stop her before she found it). But it would put Dexter on edge. I'm surprised Dexter still keeps that evidence around. It makes no sense. Yeah it's part of his ritual, but is it really? The ritual ends with the killing. Why does he need to save such incriminating evidence? It's unlike him, and certainly Harry wouldn't approve and would have advised him differently. I don't get it. I presume it will ultimately be Dexter's downfall. Why else would it be a part of the series?

I also think that it's foolish that he keeps the blood.
So I don't think Dexter will ever have a downfall. Actually when I comtemplate how this series will end I would like maybe the general conflict of that season to be over, and have Dexter be in the final scene, perhaps about to kill someone, flashing that trademark smile.
Anyways... my point is, I highly doubt he'll be caught. Also this conflict has to be resolved by the end of the season (or so I hope) so theoretically someone else is going to take the fall... or I have no idea how this could be wrapped up.
I like Dex all stressed out. I kinda disagree with you about the sexual vibes. I think he's kinda intrigued to be honest. I know he doesn't overly like sex, but last season when Rita came over that one night and did you know what, Dexter said via voiceover that it was nice. And i think if Dexter was going to be sexually turned on, it would be with another killer... and maybe the sponsor is a killer.
I would like her to maybe know a lot more about Dexter's personal life, but I feel like eventually she'll be killed off, because already now, she could totally testify against him, if there was a trial against Dexter, so yea, she really can't stick around for too long

Those are some excellent points Bruce. I keep hoping Dexter will not get caught, but he most likely will.
I thought it was amazing Maria was the one who was cheating with Esmee's fiance. That was quite a twist, I guess she really is a "political animal"
we will probably learn more about why she does what she does...she probably has a good reason

Who is the woman playing Rita's mother? I recognized her face but her credit isn't in IMDb yet.

"Aliens from a distant universe." That whole scene was great. I hope Rita's mother stays around for a while. I have to say I like the "new" Rita too. It's only natural for her to change and grow into a stronger person given the changes she went through in the first season. She couldn't stay the vulnerable damaged woman forever and still be interesting as a character.
Thank god the Pascal storyline is over. What a shock, I never suspected LaGuerta to be the other woman. That really explains her behavior in not backstabbing Pascal to get her job back quicker in previous episodes, that had me really puzzled until now. That guy seems like a total douche, he better not stick around for long.
The Lila/Dexter story was the absolute highlight once again. I really don't think she's a fellow killer... but then again I didn't suspect Rudy until they revealed that. I really appreciate the writers sticking so closely with the original Dexter characterization in these scenes. I'm not getting any sexual vibes from them either, more like Dexter finding solace with her like he had with Harry. It's a very interesting dynamic.
Speaking of Harry, loved the flashbacks. I always wondered if his adopted mother suspected anything. I hope we get more from that stage of his life. Good choice in child actor too, he looks very similar to the other young-Dex.
Will he be caught by Algae? Hah.

Keeping souvenirs is a large part of the pathology of serial killers. They need it to remember their exploits. I'll grant you that keeping it in the air conditioner is weird, especially since Deb moved in. A safety deposit box, or secret compartment on the boat would make more sense.
They haven't followed the books, where Deb knows about Dexter. But I think she knows more than she is letting on. I don't think she slept through the confrontation between Dex and Biny (ice truck killer) last season. This is adding to her stress levels.

It was nice to see Kiko Ellsworth as Bertrand; I wonder if/when he'll come clean to Esmee about LaGuerta. As far as the blood is concerned, some serial killers have a compulsion to keep mementos of their crimes. It makes sense that he would have them close by, as it signifies his continuing control over his victims.

The algae thing is something right out of "Bones" - I'd expect Jack Hodgins to catch someone with that, but not in this show. In fact, if Dexter were smart, when they identify which marina the rocks came from, he should immediately say "hey, I have a boat docked at that marina!" to all the cops involved. I wonder if Deb knows about his boat? I know she doesn't know what he does with it, but does she know he has one? It would be odd if (when?) they get a list of all the names of the people who keep boats there, Dexter's is on it, and Deb sees it and had no idea he had a boat there, and confronts him about it.
That might be the thing that finally gets her suspicious about Dexter.
A question: does anyone know if Dexter's marina is the same one at which Rudy the ice truck killer kept his boat?
A second question: is Dexter's boat really his? Or does he borrow/steal it occasionally from someone (this would negate my identification theory posed above). I doubt it, but it's worth asking.

@bruce -- Dexter's boat is named "Slice of Life" I believe, so I'd say that's his boat. :)
I think it would be Dexter's best bet to up-front admit his boat is in that same marina, though maybe his boat name will tip people off. Heh.

This episode had a lot more of the "Dexter the outsider" to it, that was missing early this season. I find it fascinating when we get to see ourselves as Dexter sees us, disconnected and from a distance.
I also was intrigued by his father calling him a monster. Kind of lends credence to Lila's theory, in that he's been called a monster his whole life by the one person he trusts, so that's become his complete identity.

Something's troubling me. They say that all the victims were suspected or convicted of murder. That's not true, right? From last year, we had the Psychiatrist who was getting his patients to commit suicide, the arsonist, the nurse, the guy who killed children, etc. I don't think the cops had anything on record about these guys.

I really don't think Lila is going to be a killer. It's possible, but I don't think they are going to be so obvious.
And I can't be the only one that sensed some attraction between Dexter and his sponsor during his "shoving" of her and their kiss. I definitely think Rita has at least something to worry about.
Yea, bobapple, I was thinking the same thing. At the very least, it seems like it wouldn't be that easy to figure out the crimes of all the victims, as the reason Dexter originally picked them was because there wasn't enough traditional evidence to convict them in a court of law.
I always thought the blood samples in the air conditioner thing was more to keep them fresh, and out of sight, than to keep them close, although that makes sense too.
The algae thing doesn't seem that improbable, but maybe I have been jaded by the resolutions of too many L&O: CI and CSI episodes. We'll have to wonder what Dexter's next move is, as disposing of the rocks in some way that looks like an accident would seem to be one coincidence too many for smarty pants federal guy.

So what ever happened to that lady that Dexter, sneaks police files from? Isn't she going to know that the files are some of the same people who ended up dead by the BHB? Where did she go?
And I think Rita should get accidentally pregnant by Dexter. Let's see if he feels something then? It seems like he connects to children. What if one were his own. But then, after they contemplate what to do with the baby, she loses it. Those would be alot of mixed emotions I think Dexter would HAVE to feel.

I just thought of an obvious way Dexter could get out of this, though very risky. Vince may just assign Dexter to collect rocks from his own marina, and Dex will just collect them from somewhere else.

Jo,
The storyline is already set out in the books that the series is based on. Fortunately there are still a number of books, so we are guaranteed some good scripts and hopefully some more seasons for a while yet......

I have a question for you guys:
In the first season, the big showdown at the end:
The Icetruck killer tried to kill Deb, and confesses to her that he is the killer. At the same time, he tries to get Dexter to 'finish off' his victim, which Dexter refuses to do, and instead kills Rudy himself.
Now, do the police know that the Icetruck Killer is dead? and if yes, how did Dexter explain it?
Or if they don't know, are they still searching for him? It always seems like the case is closed...
The reason Im asking: What if this is still an open case, then the police would never be able to identify Rudy's body as the Icetruck Killer's body, and Dexter could try to use false evidence to point towards the Icetruck Killer...am I missing something?
also, do you think Dexter will stop killing now, with the police catching up with him?

Shoobidoo you need to get a hold of the the last episode. You somehow missed the ending. The police found Rudy/Brian/Biny's body strapped to his tipping table, dead.
I S - The show isn't following the books. In the first book, the ice truck killer lives, the Lt. get killed and Rita's children and Deb all know things about Dex that they don't in the show. The second book is completely different than this season and the third book's plot is waaay out there.
