In a move that should surprise no one, Jon Stewart has extended his contract until 2010 with Comedy Central. Considering the big relaunch of The Daily Show website and the success of both this show and its spin-off The Colbert Report, I somehow didn't think they'd be letting the guy go.I've often thought that Stewart would be a natural replacement for Letterman (and there are rumors flying around to that effect). However, to the best of my knowledge Letterman isn't retiring yet.
I once went to a live taping of The Daily Show. Before the show began, Stewart answered questions from the audience. I was impressed with his smooth nonchalance to each of the questions asked (even when someone asked him if he were ice cream, what flavor would he be).
Frankly, I think it's smart for Stewart to stay, particularly with his name in the title. Consider the fate of the last host when he prematurely moved to network TV.

Although the Late Show is more prestigious, the Daily Show is much more influential.
I agree that Steward would be a natural to replace Letterman. But let's keep Dave in that chair as long as he wants. Letterman still puts on the best show in that time slot and continues to deliver.

If you consider the Colbert Report to be in that time slot, I really think they have the best show during the hour (even though they only take up half of it)
It is pretty amazing to see the early Stewart episodes of the Daily Show on the new Daily Show website. You can tell that Stewart has grown up so much over the years, and has so much more confidence and talent, but the same basic core of irreverence was there from the beginning.

Jon Stewart is much too smart and passionate to do Late Night. What I like about TDS is that the conversations about politics show that Jon has a brain and knows how to use it, and I rarely see that with Letterman or Leno. It would be a shame if he were confined to the format of a late-night network TV show.
