(S04E04) "I pitched a fly rod right in my waders." - Denny Crane
In case you were confused about David E. Kelley's political leanings, the opening scene should have cleared it up for you. Let's see...Bush lied, the military is intolerant of homosexuals, got it. Sounds like a left wing to me. The scene also asks an important question...where the hell has Sam McMurray been? He was my favorite cast member on The Tracy Ullman Show. Unfortunately, he's one of the few who didn't go on to work on The Simpsons and I, for one, think he should be on TV more.
I don't really know what to make of the young matador. David E. Kelley seems to be hell bent on doing two things this season...pissing off the right wingers and pissing off PETA.
Last week, he's defending cock fighting and this week, he's defending a matador? I'm all for civil liberties but there's a reason why those activities are illegal in the US. They're cruel, plain and simple. Are the writers trying to make some point that I'm not seeing or should I just chalk it up to the typical Boston Legal wackiness? Maybe the return of the randy nun is a clue pointing toward the latter.
While I have been underwhelmed with the new associates at Crane Poole & Schmidt, it's nice to see Taraji Henson, if only because she's black. The offices have been lacking in diversity for quite a while now. I know Clarence does what he can but try as he might, he's really only one person.
As I was watching the show, I realized another reason why I love BL so much. The way they cast classic TV actors in different roles is always a treat for me. Seeing Henry Gibson, Shelley Berman and Howard Hesseman in positions of authority never fails to make me grin. It's the same way I felt when I saw Shatner cast as the senior partner way back when.
The Katie/Jerry romance is doing nothing for me. I guess it's mainly because I loathe TV dramas with workplace romances. Almost every show about doctors, lawyers or cops have the characters sleeping with each other. I understand that it's convenient to hook up characters that have already been established but it's just not believable. Just like in real life, it rarely ends well. Usually one or both characters end up being written off the show (Brad, Claire, Denise, et. al.) Besides, isn't Katie way out of Jerry's league? By the way, if you are going to use your office for a quick make out session with a colleague...CLOSE YOUR DOOR!
I was excited to see the return of Alan's "word salad' but disappointed when Lorraine turned out to be the cause. Not to beat a dead horse, but she simply isn't hot enough to cause that kind of stress. I sympathize with Alan's issues but it's about time he dealt with it.
As for the outcomes of the cases, I was pleasantly surprised by the decision to let the parents raise their child and do what they think is best. I wasn't so surprised by the other case simply because, if there was to be real justice, there could be no other outcome.

Lets see they have 2 actresses from the UK yet they still keep calling it England? Shirley mentioned England allows gays in the military, well surely she means the UK? England doesn't have a military! Wikipedia it!
Then the new British lawyer mentions "England thought we controlled the world", etc, well there wasn't really ever an English empire - it was British.
As for cock fighting and the rest, their argument that "America doesn't control the world" etc was weak ... it doesn't control the world, but it does control America - it can and should outlaw this barbaric sport in America, nothing stops them doing it in Mexico!

I've been a fan a BL since the beginning and am used to a couple of really stupid episodes / plotlines every season, but this season may be the straw that breaks this viewer's back.
Like the author said, what's up with the obsession with Mexican animal sports? Frankly I don't care what they do there; let what happens in Mexico stay in Mexico (including the Mexicans.) If it's illegal *here*, well then it is what is is...illegal; no need to push Mexican moral values on mainstream America.
And turning Allen into a mumbling bumbling retard over a woman who really isn't very attractive at all is absolutely uncalled for.

Jeep, hopefully you saw the part where the father said that he would take his son to Mexico to do the bullfighting. The boy wasn't bullfighting in the U.S. I think I'm about tired of everyone blasting on this whole immigration deal. I think it's time to get over it! Paul, I'm as right wing as they come but to tell you the truth, this episode didn't bother me at all and on the flip side, anything that pisses PETA off is A-OK in my book! Can't wait till next week!

in the past, i have been delighted by the deftness that was used to make a political point. the liberal leanings of the writers have always been evident but not so in your face. even though my politics differ in many areas i have never been uncomfortable enough to become angry. this last two episodes have required way more tolerance from me than the writers have displayed. i hope that very soon we will be seeing more of the quirky cases and fun characters we have come to love. i am rooting for a Katie/Alan romance. she is so fresh and unspoiled. i think eventually Alan will find that irresistible.

I just want to say right up front that I'm no fan of the Bush Administration and I can't wait until they're gone. That said, this episode was blatant, tiresome political propaganda from start to finish. It kinda made me wonder if this is what TV was like in the old Soviet Union. I cant imagine many viewers enjoy getting preached at by Hollywood.

I liked this episode, not for what it was about but because they brought back little bits of info viewers might not remember, like the gay judge, and a few little things. I liek when BL does that.
I don't think bull fighting is a sport, I also don't think it's inhumane. I just think it is dumb. However I would love if BL pissed off PETA. :)

the mexican kid who bullfights was one of the stories in last week's "20/20" which was about young kids doing adult stuff, and i think they used the real footage from that interview segment too.

Paul, FYI, I've dated a total of two women in the last 21 years. I met them both at work and married both of them.) Don't worry, it was sequential, not concurrent.) I've known lots of other workplace romances that have turned out to be just as successful. It does happen in real life and rather frequently so.

These last two episodes reminded me a lot of the episode last season where David E. Kelly tried to convice us that disagreeing with the politics of Israel is tantamount to being an anti-Semite, which forever turned me off to the Bethany character (and I really liked her). Just too much. While I may agree with verdict that was reached for the decorated general who happened to be gay, it wasn't realistic. In the real world the judge may or may not have agreed with the defendant's case, but I doubt seriously he or she would have overstepped judicial authority in a case of this nature. This may be television, and quirky television at that, but sometimes a little realism is need for this series. These lawyers win too much.
All that being said, I still enjoy this series. James Spader and William Shatner have the best chemistry of any two people currently working on television.

We have really loved the show but are about ready to give it up as we are fed up with more and more of the political spin. Enough already! We don't need to turn this great show into agenda driven entertainment. An occasional shot to the left or right now and then is fine but please, give it a rest!

I just love newcomer Katie and would like to see her hook up with Jerry and smooth him out a bit. All he needs is the love of a good woman! Please keep Alan away from her. He is such a pig these days. Ewwwwwwww.
Speaking of: Down with James Spader. I used to think highly of him, but the left-slanted tripe coming out of his mouth constantly really gets me down. I know he doesn't write it, but enough is enough. This used to be a fairly well-balanced show. Maybe Kelley thinks its de rigueur to continue down this path, but I've almost had it. I tape all the shows and fast forward any time Spader is in court.
I miss Rene Auberjonois (went to junior high school with him) and look forward to his occasional appearances. Candice Bergen can't be beat and it's great to see with her new love.
I never really knew William Shatner (Patrick Stewart was MY guy) but he is who he is and I like him.

I'm a (mostly) conservative who absolutely loves this show. Largely for the chemistry between Shatner and Spader, but I find the writing to be brilliant. Do I understand they're feeding me political propaganda? Of course I do. I enjoyed the West Wing for it's writing too, but I'm strong enough in my convictions that I can enjoy the entertainment and not feel in danger of being swayed by Hollywood script writers. It's the only thing on that actually makes me laugh out loud at times and I think the only reason they brought back the Mexican sport topic was to have the translating nun on again...she was hysterical! What upsets me most is the reviewer doesn't find Lorraine hot! When she's on screen, I start speaking word salad and I'm only watching TV.

Wow, that's what I have to say after reading everyones comments. I love the show and all of the episodes and it amazes me that almost everyone that had comments, complained about something and seemed rather defensive about matters. I find BL refreshing, creative, and brilliant in that it actually addresses current events and from different perspectives to actually make people think or at least notice these things for a moment, while still realizing it is entertainment and a form of free speach or at least writing. I then find, considering the comments, the fact that many of you do not want to continue to watch the episodes unless they suit your opinion or expectation to be very disappointing. The fact that you seem so defensive about having to look at or watch something from a different point of view....strangly predjudice. I almost do not understand then why you enjoy the show, its adversity is what attracted me to BL in the first place. If you want fun characters with not much diversity in the story, flip the channel to one of the "franchise/copy cat" shows that so plentily fill the airwaves. Since television, other media, and even society are constantly bombarding us with opinions and "media/peer pressure" telling us how we should think, act, live, maybe we should open our minds a bit and accept, enjoy, and even try to think about different view points when they come along. Sadly it looks like you all want to keep the blinders on and even have the show format it's self into a more conforming role. Do you also believe that people from other religions and backgrounds would be better off if they changed to become the way you want? Wow, I thought it would be different in 2007, say from the 50's.
