(S07E03) Wow. I feel like all I have to do for this review is to write "Kara enter a beauty contest" and it just speaks for itself. Sure, there's a bit more to it than that, but c'mon ... you were so waiting for the swimsuit competition. Admit it.
So, Clark has been keeping Kara "locked up" on the farm with nothing but Beauty and the Geek to watch? How coincidental that also airs on The CW. In fact, why didn't they just have her say Supernatural to give Jared and Jensen a good lead in plug? Plus, what tiny town is able to draw head turning models for a "Miss Sweet Corn" contest like the ones in tonight's episode? That's a town I wouldn't mind living in.
I tried (and failed) to keep my pangs of jealousy inside when Kara developed the fiery hots for Jimmy Olsen. I mean, he's a junior photographer at best, and she's, well ... Supergirl. She can't fall for Jimmy because then the Smallville universe will collapse in on itself and my brain will explode. And come one Kara, get off your duff and just force Clark to fly already. We know he's gonna fly eventually. You can fly yourself. Plus you don't have your own car. It just makes so much sense.
I'm also going to start a running tally for this season to see how many times Clark's dog actually makes an appearance. I always forget that he even has a dog, and then suddenly, woof. He's there. I sure hope someone is feeding him. That is unless he's a meteor rock powered dog whose power is the ability to always have a full stomach. That'd be one happy dog.
Okay, the meat and potatoes of this episode. A very expositionally-introduced "treasure map" that leads to a hidden treasure. Some rejects from Mean Girls want to nab it and the dough, but Kara gets involved and things take a wild turn, as they always do in Smallville. This includes Jimmy nearly getting frozen (a bit ironic, since he's Iceman in the X-Men flicks), Chloe trying to stop sucking at work (what brought this on?), and the return of Lana.
Which brings me to my major problem with this episode. Sure the plot seemed wafer-thin and slapped together (The Weather Girls? Ouch), but this whole Lana sliding into annoying-ville subplot is really getting tiresome. Now that she knows his secret, it seems like it's just a matter of time until she gets bumped off (for real this time), or banished to wherever Pete Ross ended up. Remember him? Oh Smallville, it seems like so long ago. Lana has lost so much of her relevance on the show, especially now that Lois is on the slow. Plus, with Kara and Chloe in the picture, Lana is just a fourth wheel. I never thought I'd be saying this ... but it's time we said goodbye to her.
Plus, I have to toss this in there: if Chloe loses Jimmy to Kara, she's going to have to pretty much declare war on the Kent family. I mean, Clark spurns her affections, her boyfriend is making googoo eyes at Clark's cousin, and she's sort of getting knocked around at work by Lois, who isn't really connected to Clark yet, but since they do eventually end up together, I think it's safe place it in the ballpark. Come on Chloe, buck up and stick to your guns.
My favorite moment of this episode? When Kara went all Gallagher on the watermelon in the barn. Sledge-o-matic, meet heat vision.

Aaron Ashmore isn't Iceman in the X-Men movies, that's his twin brother Shawn who also played the guy who temporarily got Clark's powers on an earlier episode of Smallville.

I thought it was an ok episode. I miss Lionel and Lois when they're not in an episode though. And I agree about Lana.
Oh, and Aaron Ashmore didn't play Iceman, his twin brother Shawn did, who was the kid who stole Clark's power back in season one.

Are you crazy? Kara in her little bathing suit was the best part. Although, she did seem to get out of jail pretty quick and with no trouble. I guess Chole just blamed everything on the weather girls (who were cheesy by the way). I agree that Lana is getting really annoying. It didn't seem like that big of a deal to Clark that his one true love was back from the grave.

Good episode. Well, entertaining episode. Certainly wasn't boring, they kept it moving.
One question: the treasure. Why in the world would they have buried that huge mound of gold just for a time capsule event? A bar or two I could see, but that was like a whole pallet-full of gold, probably worth millions even back when they buried it. Hmm, does the gold not being there mean they didn't actually bury it, or maybe went back and surrepticiously dug it up later? And is this too many questions about a show like this? heh
Oh, and Kara also plugged "America's Next Top Model," another CW show. Perhaps they did that to explain how she knew how to "runway walk" and do other pageant-y things well enough to win?

Holy christ, enough already, I tried taking a deep breath at the begining of this season and reminding myself that smallville is a "fun" show. But supergirl sucks, she just plain sucks, we don't have time for this distraction. She isn't bad, shes just boring, which is worse. Its Lois all over again. Whom I still haven't warmed up too. Poor old chloe sullivan, and guess what Lois isn't a better reporter just because thats who her characters is supposed to be. Lanas character has been worn away because the shows gone on too long and Chloe has to marginalized for the show to fullfill the superman mythos. We had enough loose ends to tie up without introducing new characters. Its a struggle to keep watching each week, smallville is gonna be one of those shows that will differently die of disintrest.

Well said Keith.
I think the creators are using the seventh season of Smallville like the last season of The Practice was used for, to make spinoffs. I think it's clear that they want Super Girl to get her own show because Smallville is most likely ending this year.

Not only did Kara plug America's Next Top Model, but Eva Marcille (who use to be known as Eva Pigford), the winner of the third cycle of ANTM, played the villain who could freeze.

kevjohn & Mike: They didn't plug "America's Next Top Model". Kara said she was watching "Project Runway" and "Beauty and the Geek".
and
kevjohn: Nobody buried any gold for the time capsule event. They included a purported map to the location of the gold. And there wasn't any gold anyway, all they found at the location was the box with the Kryptonian SOS thing.

You know, I enjoy a hot, scantily clad women as much as the next guy, but enough already with the contrived reasons show that Laura Vandervoort has a great body. It's like the writers of this show are a bunch of geeky high school freshman who need to get laid and giggle every time a hot girl walks by. Moreover, can someone give Laura Vandervoort a better wardrobe than the Daisy Duke rip-off she been stuck in almost from the beginning. Again, we get it, Laura Vandervoort has a nice midriff.
I agree with everyone's sentiment about Lana. It's time for her to go. She was actually interesting last season when she was married to Lex, but now she's once again just boring old Lana who never changes.

To people saying Lana needs to go, I think you're being vastly impatient. This season promises us something we haven't seen except for briefly during the 100th episode: Lana knows Clark's secret, and Clark knows she knows. It's finally out in the open. Yes, they've been going over the Clana ground for a long time now, but they have finally, FINALLY gotten past the secrets hurdle. I'm sure new secrets will come up, but, at the very least, Lana can be more fully involved when Clark is doing his superhero stuff, she won't have to get knocked out quite so much, and, if their relationship falls apart later this season, at least it won't be for the same old "I can't let her know my secret" reason.
To me, Clana suddenly got a lot more interesting than its been in a long time.

The perfect time to get rid of Lana was the ep where Clark first told her his secret and she died in a car crash. Clark then blames Lex for her death and we have a perfect reason for Clark and Lex to truly hate each other. Plus we get rid of Lana. Instead we lost Jonathan and have to struggle through who knows how many more seasons of her sulky subplots slowing down the show.
Anyway, this ep was ok - I just thought we were past the meteor freak plots by now. Those are so damn tiresome - especially when we have a ton of new plot points that could be moving the story ahead. Clark needs to start his training, Lex needs to hurry up and get evil again, we need to find out who rescued Lionel, Clark needs to fly, Kara needs to enter more bikini contests, etc. etc.... Lana is so completely unnecessary at this point....

Hey...Once again...No more "I want to grow old with you" BS from Lana to Clark...The writers need to end this NOW--post haste! CLARK KENT marries LOIS LANE already!!! So stop jerking us around and let's get Lois and Clark going! I'm sorry if I ruined it to those who have no idea that Superman is a comic book character and that his future has already been written...WITHOUT Lana.

Lana ran the only coffee shop in Smallville, married billionaire Lex Luthor, is a frequent guest of the hospital trauma ward and is presumed dead in a heavily publicized car explosion that indeed did turn up "her" body. Yet nobody notices as she walks around Smallville's fair?
She is just such a useless character and with compelling characters like Chloe, Lois and now Kara then it's really wasting precious superhero screentime to shoehorn her into these episodes.

You guys are crazy about Lana. She's practically the ONLY thing that he puts a smile on his face for and he has cared for her since the beginning. My question is, how in the hell is he supposed to fall in love with Lois?? She has NOTHING that he likes. And for that matter, why did he ever like Lois in the movie? Maybe the comics explain it.

Funny you should say Lana needs to be banished to wherever Pete Ross ended up (I liked his character!) because in the comics, Lana and Pete are married (though there might have been talk about a divorce while he was Luthor's vice president...I'm not sure).
