Of course, if you aren't planning on watching any high definition TV for a while, you might as well keep the box you've got. But if you were going to pick up a $300 TiVo HD anyway, this is a pretty good deal. You'd wind up spending over $150 on a one year subscription for your new box, which makes an extra $199 look like a pretty good deal.
There's no indication TiVo plans to offer newer customers a lifetime service option. This offer is geared at getting older customers to upgrade their boxes.

Awesome.. er.. Well.. Should I chuck in my series one and plunk down 500$$ for a series 3 lifetime? My series one sure has lasted a long time... 8 years just about =)

Well, I'm not in the advice giving business, but if you're planning on getting an HDTV any time soon, this looks like about as good a deal as you're likely to get on an HD TiVo.
On the other hand, if you're planning on sticking with standard definition TV for a few more years you can probably save a few hundred bucks and wait for the TiVo Series4 3D video recorder.

Mandabar - Yes, you can upgrade the drives in a Series3 or TiVo HD. They also have eSATA ports to connect external drives. They're supposed to be officially enabled this year, but there are ways to make it work now.
