(S08I07) This issue starts out with the longest - and perhaps first - foray into flashback territory for this "season." I guess I could have gone through my well overplayed DVDs and checked the referred-to episode for accuracy, but it seemed pretty dead-on to me.Y'know, I love Giles and all, and I especially appreciate that he's a presence in this series, but I'm not really digging how cookie-cutter he seems, particularly in these last two issues. Is it just me or does he drink tea and clean his spectacles way too (stereotypically) often?
I guess the same could be said regarding Faith. She's talking like high-school Faith, not the one who, if I remember correctly, seemed more grown-up in the seventh season. Look, I live in Massachusetts, and I know the term "wicked" is used a wicked lot, but hearing (sorry - reading) her say it just seems overdone. And yes, I do know that Eliza Dushku is originally from the state.
Sorry to keep harping on the negative here, but another thing that could have been better (or just maybe not included) was the Dawn/Willow scene. First of all, I still don't like Dawn -- never cared for her character at all. So fricken' whiney (heh, I should talk). Secondly, it's distracting that Willow is suddenly flying and floating around like a genie all the time. I guess when Joss said they could do a lot more with a comic book than they can on a TV show, maybe he meant they'd do more of this. I can't imagine how expensive it'd be to make that scene look good on TV.
What I did like about this issue was Faith's inner thoughts and how she's still trying to make up for her past, more or less. Does she feel close at all to Buffy, or will her new "friend" make her take a turn toward how she felt with the Mayor seasons ago?
And then there's that funky mark again. Any clues as to what that could mean?
This issue didn't live up as well as I'd hoped from the first issue of this, er, episode. But I still have faith (no pun intended) that it will keep me interested.

The whole Faith/Gigi bonding thing is interesting...makes you wonder if Gigi's saveable if you separate her from the bad guy. Then again, Faith's not the best influence either :)

i haven't read this issue yet. but if your talking about the mark on Giles' forearm, thats the mark of eregon from season 2.( i think, the one with the demon goes into ms. calendar)

I love that you are reviewing this new season!
I am also from MA, and I agree with you on the over usage of "Wicked" - I'm over 40 so maybe I've had more time to excise that out of my daily lexicon... nonetheless, it seems contrived.
I would love to see some deeper stuff between Giles & Buffy in regards to their falling out season 7. Yes, they "made up", but still - Giles and Buffy have such a powerfully complicated relationship - surely resentment and other things still simmer underneath.
One of the most incredible bits of Season 7 for me was when Giles tried to Re humanize Buffy, in stark contrast to when he kept trying to get her to take her duty seriously in the early years.

I think Faith will have to play buffy to Gigi's Faith and kill her friend for the greater good. (Echoing the buffy/ faith showdown from the show) It's the only way to illustrate her growth- no way she is going to relapse so easily after all she's been through- she'll do the right thing even if her heart doesn't want to
