Desperate Housewives: Smiles of a Summer Night

Desperate Housewives
(S04E02) "We better start coming up with better lies." - Katherine

After a controversial season premiere (in case you haven't heard, ABC had to apologize for a joke Susan made while in Adam's office), Desperate Housewives tries to have the Mayfairs, who moved to Wisteria Lane last week, settle in. In last week's TV Squad DH poll, 68% of the voters said they thought the Mayfairs were a good addition to the show. Based solely on last week's episode, I have to agree. But now that we are getting more backstory about the Mayfairs and seeing them interact more with their neighbors, have we changed our mind?

Personally, my opinion about the addition of the Mayfairs hasn't changed. Actually, after watching the Bree and Katherine showdown, I'm delighted the latter joined the show! I can see why Marc Cherry thought of Dana Delany first to play Bree. She plays a neurotic character with tons of secrets very well.

Bree vs. Katherine

Desperate HousewivesHow delicious was it to watch Bree go berserk this week? I love it when she has her mind set on something that doesn't seem that important and she is willing to do everything and anything to reach it (remember the loose button on her shrink's jacket?). Okay, there is more at stake than the pie recipe here since Bree is on the verge of losing her Martha Stewart of Fairview status but still, going through all that trouble for a lemon meringue pie recipe? That's exactly why I love Bree so much.

The Bree and Katherine showdown was great entertainment. Katherine clearly won the first two rounds: she got the ladies to taste her pie and say it was the best (even Bree admitted to it!), and she didn't give her recipe to Bree when the latter asked for it.

The cherry on top of the sundae was how polite and civilized the two remained while arguing and saying not so nice things to one another! They were all smiles (of course, their smiles weren't warm and true ones but meant "I'm not done with you!"). Can you believe Katherine told Bree that her minced meat pie recipe came from a recipe book? I was so hoping to see Bree run to her house and look on the net to see if Katherine was right. Imagine what would have happened if the recipe did come from a book!

Desperate HousewivesAfter trying for hours to replicate the recipe, Bree remembers she has a key to the house (I don't get why Katherine didn't change the locks when she moved in since she didn't know who had the key plus she has a lot of secrets that must stay hidden) and decides to go steal the recipe. Of course, things don't go exactly as planned and she eventually overhears a conversation between Adam and Katherine that is more delicious than the lemon meringue pie. The Mayfairs are hiding something important from Dylan and are willing to find new and improved lies to keep it secret.

You can bet that Bree will now set her sight on discovering what the secret is. She should have tea with McCluskey who does know a lot about the Mayfairs. She actually knows about Dylan's father, who, according to Katherine, was a monster... was he really? Is he the man who came in Dylan's bedroom? More questions, not many answers yet. But with Dylan, Susan, Bree, Julie, and McCluskey, all wanting to know more about what happened to Dylan, we will surely get some hints here and there every week.

Edie vs. Carlos

Desperate HousewivesEdie continues to make Carlos' life a living hell. As a birthday gift to herself, she decides to propose to Carlos and blackmail him in saying yes. This makes things more complicated for Carlos, especially since he wants to get back with Gaby and doesn't want to go to jail because he has money stashed away.

Carlos decides to take care of Edie and hires a man to do something (it is not clear that the man has to kill Edie, but it's implied or at least they want us to believe that is what he'll try to do). Since Nicolette Sheridan is said to be a regular for the complete season, it's doubtful the hit man will succeed, unless he'll injure her or find dirt on her that Carlos can use to even out the score.

In retrospect, I'm not enjoying this storyline much. As I've told you last week, I'm not a Carlos+Edie fan, so seeing them together all that time is not a pleasant sight for me.

Lynette vs. Gaby

This week's episode sure helped Gaby and Lynette grow closer as friends. It was heartbreaking to listen to Gaby explain why she didn't want to accompany Lynette at the hospital for chemotherapy. It shows you that what a mother says (don't cry in front of your dying father) has a huge impact, even years later, on a child.

Susan vs. Julie vs. Mike

Married life is not always easy, especially when one of the spouses has a teenage child. Julie again proved us that she is wise beyond her years (maybe even more than her mother). The teen in her wanted to go to the party, but the grown up she is becoming behaved at said party and told her mother to start making decisions, stick to them, and tell the truth. Even if it means less awkward scenes, I hope Susan starts to behave like an adult a bit more. If she wants her marriage to work out, she'll need to be truthful and stop acting like a child. She and Mike can become a great couple if she thinks before acting.

How do you like the Katherine and Bree showdowns?
