Romantic relationships between television characters are a complicated business. Especially when the characters aren't romantically involved, yet exude enough sexual energy between each other to light up a small city. This is why so many debates rage on about if so-and-so should get together with so-and-so on a particular show.
One of these shows is Bones. Since its premiere on FOX back in 2005 the biggest debate has been whether or not Special FBI Agent Seeley Booth and forensic anthropologist Temperance 'Bones' Brennan should get together. Well, if Emily Deschanel, who portrays Bones on the show, had her way the two characters certainly would.
In a phone interview with some of us television reporter types, Emily agreed that Bones and Booth should get together at some point. Yet, according to Deschanel, doing something like this could be very dangerous to the show. "I think that the writers and producers are very much aware of that and the dangers of putting characters together and what that can mean for the show", said Emily during the phone conference. She stated that having the two characters get together could kill the chemistry that makes the show what it is.
While the romance won't be heating up between Bones and Booth at just this moment, there will be a change in their relationship as the third season progresses. That, according to Deschanel, is thanks to the arrest of Bones' father. "It certainly makes them address issues and it makes them say things head on, which I think is always a good thing", stated Emily, who went on to say that it is an interesting dynamic and good for the pair's relationship.
More than just the relationship between Booth an Bones was discussed during this interview. For instance, the topic of scheduling was brought up. Deschanel said that the pairing of Bones with House (at least until show-pusher American Idol premieres in January) was fantastic because these two shows were made to be with each other. She added that Bones and Gregory House are both prickly on the outside, but in very different ways. To the subject of whether the dark subject matter of the series disturbs her, Deschanel said that while she hasn't been desensitized to all the gore she has gotten used to it.
Also talked about was Emily's feelings when her father directed an episode of Bones. "The first day working with my father was nerve wracking", said Deschanel, "I was terrified that I would embarrass him or he would embarrass me and it was probably one of the more tortuous days of my life. After the first day was under our belt, it was a great opportunity and I'll always look back on that experience fondly."

I'm betting that on the phone she said "torturous", not "tortuous", and while either could probably have been used my money's on the former. She had a torturous day. It was strained and she felt somewhat tortured.
From Answers.com for clarification:
-----------------------------------
Tortuous: Having or marked by repeated turns or bends; winding or twisting.
Torturous: Of, relating to, or causing torture. Twisted; strained.
USAGE NOTE Although tortuous and torturous both come from the Latin word torquēre, “to twist,” their primary meanings are distinct. Tortuous means “twisting” (a tortuous road) or by extension “complex” or “devious.” Torturous refers primarily to torture and the pain associated with it. However, torturous also can be used in the sense of “twisted” or “strained,” and tortured is an even stronger synonym: tortured reasoning.

Booth and Bones together would be like Beauty and the Beast. Please, looking at Emily Deschanel and watching her try to act is "torturous".

God no. They have a good UST thing going on, the can milk that for seasons and seasons (if it lasts that long). The moment they go there the show is over.

I've watched Bones from Day One and really enjoy it - never miss an episode. I hope the writers don't hook Bones and Booth up romantically until the last few episodes of the final season (whenever that might be). The same type of situation is developing on Shark with the James Woods/Jeri Ryan characters. He's flirting with her to the hilt and she is rebuffing him. It's a hoot to watch the two of the go round and round. I hope this is what the Bones writers do until the end of the series. Let all the flirtatious couples get together then.

The thing I always liked about the x-files was that Mulder & Scully would die for each other but you knew it was never going to be sexual in nature. Bones used to have that same feel, remember Booth saying, "I'm with Bones" when Cam first began on the show. Now they seem to be toying with this idea of putting them together. I hope they never do.

mmmm, i woud like a little action betwen the two of them, the bond has always been sexual, and it's clear and there, but the game it's fun (nether wants to recognize that the feel for eatch other, and play stupid, and that is fine too). I think that with the developmen of the show we are in time to see some action betwen them (too much tease at the end is boring, in the x files took so much time that when it happens was weard and akward, al least that's how i feelted). With a great story and greast writters puting them toguether dosen't mean the end of the show, just another layer that is fun to watch too. (sorry if there's some flaws in the writting, these is no my first languaje :))

While I think the UST between characters is fun and interesting, I think that watching the two characters function as a couple could be just as entertaining. I really like the relationship between Booth and Bones, and while I want the UST to go on, I do want them to get together eventually. (For example, if the show lasts five seasons, they ought to be together by about the end of the fourth.) UST is fun, but up to a point, and then it just gets frustrating and you want to see the characters explore full on coupledom with each other.

Naysayers of romance who always report that the minute a show's couple resort to romance "the show is over" have been tainted by the previous failures of writers to incorporate a relationship storyline into a show. When writers have a couple with great chemistry as Bones and Booth do it is a travesty to a writer not to explore that chemistry and the story arcs that can accompany it. The writing, directing and acting simply take skill to pull off. I think they can do it. If you are not open to all possibilities of a show then where is the enjoyment in watching it.

Hmm, I don't know if I like that idea. The sexual tension is very obvious but still, I kind of like the fact that they are not sleeping together yet...that would kill the dynamic.

Well, yeah, Jeremy, you knew that Mulder and Scully's relationship would never be sexual...until it did become sexual at the end of season 8 (?). Bones did used to have that feel, and I don't mind if they up the sexual tension, but I honestly do think it would be detrimental to the show for them to be together.

Yeah, until it actually did become sexual in nature...

Why is it when 2 people work together on TV, the powers that be feel, there must be some sexual tension, and eventually a hook-up.
I know plenty of people who work together, get along great, but aren't in the least attracted to each other.
If Bones were partnered with someone like say, Troy Evans, would this be an issue. I watch the show to see her doing her job, as an anthropologist, not a gun toting semi-cop, with the hots for her partner.

Keep up the tension and amusing banter, but yes. When they "get together" there should be problems since both are wounded. Also why is the show opposite NCI? Put it back to where it was, so I can enjoy both.
