Even though ABC won the first Wednesday battle of the new season with their lineup of Dancing with the Stars, Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice, and Dirty Sexy Money, NBC's Bionic Woman took a little bite out of the celebration.
The debut of the NBC remake actually gained viewers throughout the 9pm hour while Private Practice lost some, though it was a battle. Overall, NBC was second on the night with Deal or No Deal, Bionic Woman, and Life (which lost a lot of viewers halfway through). CBS was third with a new Kid Nation and the season premieres of Criminal Minds and CSI: NY. FOX was fourth with new eps of Back To You, 'Til Death, and Kitchen Nightmares. Bringing up the rear as usual was The CW, with new episodes of America's Next Top Model and Gossip Girl.

I see Life lost viewers half way through as did Journey Man earlier in the week. I'm wondering if it's the quality of the show or people simply saying they're tired and heading off to bed?

I didn't watch Bionic Woman, but the consensus seems to be from reviewers that it wasn't too great. I think the Bionic producers, who also produce the terrific "new" Battlestar Galactica, missed a golden opportunity. Last night proved there's an audience hungry for a twenty-first century Bionic Woman, but the product apparently was flawed. Everyone is saying that Michelle Ryan is too fragile and that Katie Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck on BSG and who has a recurring role as the "evil" Bionic should have had the lead. Ken Levine on his blog joked "it should be called NOT THIS BIONIC WOMAN, THAT ONE".

I agree with C C "Starbuck" rocked! The other woman was ehh...
And the title is misleading as PP still beat BW in ratings.
Wednesday 9 p.m.
Private Practice (ABC): 9.8/15 (#1)
Percent Change from Second Half of Dancing With the Stars: -20
The Bionic Woman (NBC): 9.3/14 (#2)
Percent Change From Second Half of Deal or No Deal: +41

Yes, Michelle just doesn't cut it as someone who needs to get down and dirty and do some ass kicking. Someone like Katie would have been better, though not Katie as she's just not good enough of an actress. Then there's the "we need to have something that attracts the entire family" sister who will just get abducted and into trouble before the end of the season and just be an annoying junior member of the cast. I am not looking forward to the scenes with the sister and boyfriend clubbing and all the distractions from the mail plot that will entail. But then again the plot is just overcooked with the romantic (What they need to attract people who will only see a show if there's a romantic element from the get go? Couldn't they have let a romance develop? Would that have been too much to expect the viewers to get to know more as it progresses rather than putting it up front?) doctor who just has the authority to call a team and operate on his girlfriend? And taking her uterus! At least a pregnant bionic woman would have been interesting in the future, too melodramatic there. Off my DVR list!

I saw both and was underwhelmed by both. At least the lead in Private Practice had charisma. Then again the supporting players in Bionic Woman had more punch. So for now they're both draw for me. I'll continue watching both and hopefully once both shows have smoothed things over and the high expectations settle down, they'll both be the better for it.
Oh, everyone should watch Dirty Sexy Money. That was the only show last night that exceeded my expectations.

#2, probably a lot of people are going to bed, but that also usually means that the show is not engaging either. Also, even though "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Life" lost viewers going into their second half hour, "CSI: NY" actually gained viewers.
I'm not watching either "Bionic Woman" or "Private Practice," though I think that "Private Practice" will win out in the end, providing that it does not go too far off the formula and antagonize "Grey's" viewers everywhere.
"Back to You" is pretty good. Hopefully it will get a pretty high viewership in the future.
