When I first heard that NBC was going to remake the 1970s The Bionic Woman, a spin-off of The Six Million Dollar Man, I got more giddy than a schoolgirl with a new Bratz doll -- that is what the kiddies are into, right?
The teaser video for the new Bionic Woman was intriguing to say the least. My first thought was, "Oh my God! This is my new Heroes. " I mean really how could you go wrong in the 18-24 male demo with a hot girl who kicks butt? It is practically like giving a grown-up Claire Bennett (another Heroes reference) her own show.
I heard earlier that Bionic Woman was supposed to be one of the best shows of the fall season ... excitement levels rising. I also found out that I would get to watch the pilot episode of Bionic Woman and get to tell you guys about it ... excitement levels out of control.
So let's see if the show can live up to my own hype.
So if you have seen the teaser or have the amazing ability to guess the obvious, you already know the plot to the show. Basically Michelle Ryan is Jamie Sommers a normal girl who through an "accident" -- I don't want to give any plot points away -- is in need of some rebuilding. Her boyfriend, who is a secret government surgeon, installs some nano-robotic parts and you now have a Bionic Woman. Ta-Da!
The pilot episode did a great job to introduce all the shows main players that will be supporting Jamie in her transition to Bionic-womanhood. Little Lucy Hale, star of the upcoming Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (did they really need a sequel?), does a great turn as Jamie's angsty hacker kid sister. The opening banter between them is pretty smart and realistic and she will be a great focus for Jamie's emotional side (i.e. when she is not saving the world). Although, I can't help but wonder how many time's she will be captured or used as bait throughout the season ... just remember you heard me call if first.
Also another good character to watch out for is Miguel Ferrer as Jonas Bledsoe, the highest ranking officer in the Bionics program revealed so far. Ferrer is the perfect stern leader with a troubled past who wants to complete his mission at any cost. Ferrer is probably most famous for his role as Dr. Garret Macy on Crossing Jordan, but I remember him as Bob Morton from Robocop (one of my favorite movie deaths ever).
Sans characters, plot, everything, Bionic Woman is still a surprisingly beautiful show. The cinematography and editing, as well as the pacing of the shots, are absolutely outstanding. Although there are shows on cable like Mad Men that have high, almost movie-like production values, it is very rare to see a show that looks this good on basic network television. The action and special effect sequences were also pretty top-notch, but a little shaky. To be fair, what I saw was the working version and the screener said the effect was only a temporary holder for the real effect that will air next Wednesday.
This all brings me to my one main problem with the show ... the lead character. Ryan is a great actress and I find her to be rather hot -- although somehow she looks less smoking than usual on the show. However, it seems like she is concentrating so hard on her American accent -- she is a Brit in case you didn't know -- that she forgets how to act. Her expressions and emotions are all off and she says things in an almost expressionless intonation from time to time. She is being out acted by everyone on screen, including her little sister. This is a big problem for the show. If your main character is your weakest part, the you got some major work to do, no matter how good the rest of the show is.
And it is good.
I haven't even gotten into all the little twists and turns in the first episode. I really recommend on you watching the show and deciding whether or not it is something you are willing to commit your hump day to. If the pilot of is any indicator of how the season will be, get ready for an awesome ride.

I found the pilot to be a disappointment. Maybe I missed something. Unfortunately I won't find out what I missed as I don't plan to watch any further episodes.

I stopped reading at hacker little sister. Holy clique batman! I wonder what hi-jinks those two will get into.
How many plot holes will be smoothed over by little sis hacking into government computers, police computers, telephone company computers, etc etc etc. Cause it's not hard right.
I get it. This will be another mediocre show with hot girls kicking butt being watched by guys who find actually talking to girls intimidating slobbering over them.

I got to download it early via tivo and amazon.com's unbox and thought it was pretty damn good. The one stunt (I don't want to spoil it) was worthy of any multi-million dollar movie.

A number of us have seen the pilot at work, and we all came to the same conclusion... it's kinda boring.

I really wanted to like this one, not only for the nostalgia factor, but also because I wanted to support Mark Sheppard. But I thought the pilot was weak. I've never seen the lead actress in anything before and I kept asking myself, "Why her?" I just didn't get think she could carry a show like this. (But then again, I'm also not a huge fan of Katee Sackoff - I think I'd like to see her play a softer character.)
I do like Miguel Ferrer. I also liked the Asian actor they cast as the "trainer." I wasn't drawn to either the Dr./boyfriend or the woman who seems to be second in command in the program.
I'll probably give it one more chance, but I don't have high hopes for it keeping my attention.

Kind of boring?
I don't know why there is so much hype about this. It's a remake, and it's not that good, I just don't understand it.
NBC however is really going all out after Heroes was a hit. Everything on Monday is sci-fi, then this is on Wednesday. If they don't get the sci-fi fans from Heroes to watch the show is doomed.

Bummer, so she is like the beach bum guy in Starter Wife? That guy was dreadful with his acting due to trying to fake an american accent.
I was really looking forward to this show, but that guy ruined Starter wife and he wasn't even the main character.

In the original pilot version, which I saw as a screener, Jamie's younger sister was a rebel who was deaf. I thought that would make for some interesting dynamics. But the re-shot version w/ the sister as a computer hacker is just so corny! And I, too, did think the plot was a bit tough to follow but I just assumed the storyline would play itself out over the season and eventually make sense. I'm still looking forward to seeing it though.

Once again, I'm in the minority here, as (with the exception of the wooden acting of the lead -- and the "Brit trying to get her accent right" explains that)
I thought the pilot was pretty damn good.
If the writing can keep the tension high, we'll prolly have something here. The plot point about the magical midichloreans (or whatever the hell they're called in this) better not be just a toss away issue here. There's several really cool directions to take this, especially along the good/evil sides of the whole "body modification" debate, and while the action may be the fun eye candy, I'd like to see some decent evil mods go online. We got to see the beginning and the promise of more of that in the pilot -- (not a spoiler, as that's revealed in the first minute of the show -- "Do You Love Me?")
So... keep us guessing, ala HEROES, keep it tight, ala HEROES, and give us some glimpses of how evil might win , ala... yeah, you know the show.

Did anyone else see the promo where her sister was deaf/partially deaf? I now it came out a while back, but that was more interesting then the sister they have now. Ack, plot device Batman. And the music was much better as well in that promo.

I got this via my DVR and watched it over the weekend. LIke a bunch of you, I was also pretty disapointed in it overall. In the same sitting, I also watched the pilot for Life, which I actually found I enjoyed a whole lot more.

Wait, wait, they re-shot/cast the angsty goth and somewhere out of left field deaf sister?
That shows you how long ago I watched the screener.
What else did they change? Damn. Now I'm going to have to watch what they actually air.

This show was frigging TERRIBLE. Most of the actors save for the BSG guest stars can't act. The lead is emotionless and dead. Oh, and the whole frigging show is just a re-write of "Birds of Prey" with the Bionic Woman slapped in the title.
Check the credits. You'll find Laeta Kalogridis wrote the premiere and I would bet is heavily involved in creating the bible for the show...because it smells and looks and feels exactly like her last failed "empowered chicks kicking ass" show.
The Bionic Woman sucks worse than Painkiller Jane, and that's saying something. NBC/Universal really need to let go of the idea that half-assed shows about girls kicking ass will draw the needed female 18-34 demo. The show has to be GOOD for people to watch it.

I was a big fan of the original Bionic Woman as a child, but I also thought this new one was boring. That doesn't mean I'm giving up on it. I still remember finding the pilot for X-Files boring, incorrectly thinking the show was going to be only about aliens/abductions, and it turned out to be one of my favorite series ever.
I have to agree that Michelle Ryan's acting...and hotness, are very much subdued. She was great in the little screen time she saw in Jekyll and so very, very hot in that.
I'll stick with BW for about a half-dozen episodes to see if it begins to find its way. I have a feeling the kinks will get worked out and the show will thrive. At least I hope so.

It was not so much boring as it was extremely predictable. All the characters have on white or black hats and Katee Sackhoff's character is robotic.
Even worse, it was everything that BattleStar Galactica was not. Dark but not moody, tech-y but not intelligent, and lacking an emotional element that made me say "I hope she turns out OK and I'm going to come back next week to find out."
very disappointing.

Dude, Michelle Ryan used to be on Eastenders, the Most Miserable Soap Opera Ever. She is a good actress, but, um, rarely got to show her talents on EE. Although when she did, it was fab. Glad to see she's gained a little weight, too.
Like you, I'm very much looking forward to BW, I'm just hoping it doesn't conflict with any other show...(Criminal Minds?)

Faith was a great addition to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an "alternate" version of slayerhood, if you will, with a charismatic performance by Eliza Dushku. It worked because Sarah Michelle Gellar had Buffy down perfectly ... Dushku was good, she was given plenty of chances to steal scenes, but in end, there was always Gellar/Buffy.
Katee Sackhoff is at least as charismatic in Bionic Woman as Dushku was as faith. But there's no SMG here. Sackhoff blows the titular actress off the screen, and the imbalance ruins the show. It's not a good thing when you spend all of your time watching a show and thinking "I don't care about this lead character, when is Starbuck gonna be in a scene?" If it isn't clear, I'm a huge fan of Sackhoff, but I don't need this, a mediocre show salvaged only by the occasional appearance of one interesting actress.

The pilot isn't that bad. Yes, Ryan was quite stiff in this opener, and hopefully when she's more comfortable with the accent she'll loosen up.
Honestly, I really hated Katee Sackhoff. She's great on Battlestar, but in this opener, she ruined the beginning of the pivotal rooftop scene. Obviously, her lines didn't come across well, because you can tell they had her in a studio reciting the lines again and dubbed them over. Still, the scene stinks, and the writing was awful.
Despite that, I have very high hopes for the show, and I've seen some glimmers of brilliance. Hopefully it'll smooth out over time.
