Did you watch Survivor: China last night?
The season premiere of the CBS reality show got a 4.9 rating among adults 18 to 49 (the juicy demographic the networks love). Even though it was the highest rated show last night, it was down 25% from the "Cook Islands" season and down 14% from the "Fiji" season.
I actually watched the show last night, even though I haven't watch the last two installments (it was getting stale for me and there are other things to watch like The Office and/or Ugly Betty). And you know what? It pretty much bored me to tears. Maybe it's just that the 15th season of a show - especially a reality show - can just be too much. Or maybe it's the characters (yes, even though it's a reality show I still look at them as characters). Though I have to say the fact that Chicken was voted off the first night made me happy enough to at least TiVo the show next week. I couldn't imagine listening to him for an entire season (plus the girl with the giant boobs didn't get voted off).

You know the Producers of Survivor and CBS had an opportunity to show this rare program from China, a very exotic & beautiful locale, in HD. But they decided not too because of the expense.(Funny how a little Network like the History Channel could afford to film Ice Road Truckers in HD.) I think this show in HD would of provided a little more excitement about it. To see that locale in HD vs SD would have helped.
They went cheap instead and when the regular network programming begins we will chose to watch other shows that are better in HD. Survivor has become boring and the technology outdated.

I read on other sites that despite the fairly good ratings that TVSquad reported that Kid Nation and Kitchen Nightmares did that they weren't exactly stellar ratings especially in the key demo's
If this is so then it will be interesting to see ratings across the board in the coming weeks as the lower than expected ratings so far could be a sign for things to come. After all it was widely reported that the second half of last season saw 25% less people regularly watching broadcast tv and it could be lower ratings are the norm (no doubt due to the many different ways we can all view our favourite shows now)

I highly doubt HD had anything to do with it. People who like the show will watch it; those that don't, won't. I can't imagine anyone makes their programming decisions based on 'HD or not'. Content matters. Chances are people are just a bit tired of it and have stopped caring.
And it was a boring as hell episode. Nothing really happened. It's so much better when fewer people are left, so you know them better, and the game is really on, so there's more scheming and game play.

I think CBS is in for a rough season. Their heavy hitters -- Survivor, CSI, Without a Trace, Cold Case -- started to show some age last season, and the new shows are not generating the kind of buzz that some of NBC and ABC's new shows are getting.

Just because they're showing some age doesn't mean that their lower ratings are going to be worse than the other networks. I do however wish that this means that reality shows will realize that their novelty wears off after a few seasons...I have a feeling that while watching season two or three or four of KID NATION they find a way to mix it up. While I don't watch BIG BROTHER, it sounds to me that the cast itself wasn't favored by fans of the show, which is what happens when the people that tryout have had seasons to watch. I'm actually quite surprised that SURVIVOR has made it 15 seasons, but I hope they find that the cost of production will overtake the ratings to free up another few hours for CBS to try to get some comedies/less dramas onto the schedule.

Umm... duh...
Shouldn't the ratings go down for almost every show? There have been like 20 different ones now and i think after awhile the ratinfs slowly go down for about 95% of every show ever on TV.

If they want to boost the ratings, they should renae this season from Survivor China to Survivor Tits. It's appropriate!

I watched it online last night, and enjoyed it. It's a good formula, and it works. They've gone back to a more "classic" format, with less twists. Will it work? I don't know. Depends on the characters. I was sad to see Chicken go.

I enjoy reality shows because it's not staged however, what I don't enjoy is the extremely loud music that overpowers the contestants voices - you can't hear most of the time and it's very frustrating and annoying. Why do the producers insist on having the music that loud? - it doesn't add to the show at all. Another suggestion would be to start selecting your contestants a little better - how in the world can people go on this show and not learn anything before the leave home to help them survive in the remote areas they are taken especially when they know where their going - sorry folks, but that's how we Canadians view the American's - a little lazy and uninformed. Love the show and hopes it lasts a long time - with improvements, of course.
