Paramount Pictures is in final negotiations with Zoe Saldana to play Uhura in the upcoming Star Trek film. While the plot of the film is still a secret, it's well-known that the movie, which is being directed by J.J. Abrams, focuses on the early days of Starfleet and the younger versions of the well-known characters.
Saldana, who first came into the public eye as Britney Spears' girlfriend in Crossroads, also had a small part in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
Other cast members that have been previously announced are Anton Yelchin (Huff) as the young Pavel Chekov and Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock. Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, will appear in the movie as well.
Although there has been much talk about the subject, no official word has been given on who will play the young James T. Kirk or if William Shatner will appear in the film.
The as-yet untitled Star Trek film is the 11th big screen version of the TV show but marks a "new frontier" with the prequel-centric storyline and with wunderkind J.J. Abrams being at the helm.

Like Quinto, Saldana seems to bears a striking resemblance to the original actor. As a long-time Trekkie I'm always excited by new movies or TV series set in the Star Trek universe; that's not to say I'm alway satisfied with the end result (Star Trek 5 sucked and Star Trek: Enterprises was a huge disappointment), but I have to say I'm really starting to look forward to J. J. Abram's Star Trek. At the very least the movie is being made by people who are fans of the series.

I just wish Paramount and Abrams would come out and say, "We know Nemesis and Insurrection (for the most part) sucked balls. We apologize for putting those images in your heads, and we commit to doing better in this new movie".
Right now, I am not too hopeful.
