Weeds: Grasshopper

Mary-Louise Parker and Matthew Modine(S03E06) This week's episode truly had something for everyone: a chance to laugh at/with an Olsen twin, another "clothing optional" Botwin scene, and the introduction of the word "heroinilicious." Weeds Season Three has hit its stride in my book.

It was nice to have the old Andy Botwin back, and to have the military subplot safely behind us. After seeing Andy cook breakfast in his tightie whities, it's clear that the Army didn't whip him into peak physical condition, but no matter. There were some classic Andy moments this week. It's cute that Andy's so territorial when it comes to his recipe box. I'm the same way. We also got a brief glimpse of Andy getting turned on by the mating habits of lions. Welcome back, Botwin. You were sorely missed.

Celia and Sullivan Groff's flirtations developed into an actual date. That was fast. I suppose buying your potential love interest a home greases the wheels a bit. Sullivan's comments to Andy about the film crew occupying Celia's house made me curious as to the genre of this movie. I'm thinking...porno. I hate to sound naive, but are porno shoots usually catered? A simple yes or no will do; let's keep the comments clean.

Doug got some revenge on Celia and Sullivan, thanks to the dirt shrew and some profane golf balls. Those golf balls would be an interesting gift idea--for the right person, of course. Something tells me my mother-in-law wouldn't appreciate the humor. Doug's buddy, Dean, was noticeably absent from this week's activities. I wonder what he'll think of Sullivan's relationship with his wife? More importantly, how long will Celia and Nancy's reconciliation last once Nancy makes her move on The Groff next week?

I was thrilled that this episode included a scene between Shane and Andy. Their interactions are always hilarious (the sock talk is still my favorite). Shane's complaints about Majestic Summer School have been ignored so far, which is a bad sign. The youngest Botwin child tends to act out when he's being ignored by his Mom. I'm sensing a well-spoken outburst in our future.

Mary-Kate Olsen made her long-awaited appearance tonight, and I'm trying my best to reserve judgment for a few weeks. So far I'm having trouble deciding if it's the character or the actress that rubs me the wrong way. To be fair, some of her dialogue was God-awful (yes, pun intended). Most people would have trouble saying lines like"I'm tight with the Lord" and "Wine's OK, because Jesus drank that" with a straight face. I laughed at Mary-Kate when she said those lines, but laughed with her when she told Silas that boners and pot are what God's love is all about. Now that's a creative interpretation of the Bible!

Tara actually reminded me of Pastor Skip, Martin Donovan's character in Saved!, with regard to the whole Christian-trying-to-be-cool thing. That probably wasn't the writers' intent, but there it is. Between Tara's remarks and Duchovny calling God "Big Guy" in Californication, I'm maxed out on the hip Christian lingo. But I'm willing to see where things are going with this character. Either way, kudos to Mary-Kate for striking out on her own in a non-twin role. After reading her recent EW interview, I'm sort of rooting for her.

Judging from the results of last week's poll, the nature of U-Turn's death came as a surprise to many of you. I have to admit that I didn't see it coming, either. I figured that, in light of Heylia's comments and the Tres Seis threat, U-Turn would die a gangsta death. Instead, the combination of high blood pressure and Dreamgirls jokes proved fatal. Now that Marvin has stepped up and become more than the source of an easy laugh, what will his next move be? Will he try to take over U-Turn's drug operation, or become Nancy's (or Conrad's) employee? Personally, I'd like to see Marvin stick around for a while.

While I'm glad that U-Turn's threats of harm will no longer kill the show's buzz, I will miss a few things about the Nancy/U-turn relationship. This week, it appeared that U-Turn was grooming Nancy as his lieutenant. He even had her destroy some of Conrad and Heylia's crop as a form of intimidation (which was awesome to watch). If Nancy takes anything away from this whole U-Turn experience, I hope it involves learning to be more of a bad-ass. It suits her better than the flakiness.

U-Turn's demise takes care of Nancy's debt, but what now? Will she join up with Conrad and Heylia, or branch out as a heroin dealer? Will the Tres Seis guys make their way to Nancy's door eventually? All of those questions will have to wait until next week, or possibly later. For now, let's sit back and enjoy some choice lines from this week's episode:

  • "There's a cotton barrier between my eggs and yours" --Andy, while cooking huevos rancheros in his undies.
  • "Your tumor is B-9" --Tara, at Senior Center Bingo.
  • "Two klicks away from jihad" --Shane, on the good people at Majestic Summer School.
  • "Thug means never having to say you're sorry" --U-Turn.

What did you think of Mary-Kate's first Weeds appearance?
