I'm not at all amazed that another week brings another controversy to The View, but I am a little surprised at who is involved this time.
Singer Barry Manilow has refused to appear on the show today because he didn't want to be interviewed by Elizabeth Hasselbeck. At first I thought this was one of those "taken out of context" things, but Manilow himself told TMZ.com: "I strongly disagree with her views. I think she's dangerous and offensive. I will not be on the same stage as her." He explains more on his site.
It's a little odd because he actually was on the same stage with her more than once the past few years. Maybe he sided with Rosie in the Daytime Talk Show Wars (TM). I'm sure the gals on the show will be talking about this today and tomorrow. And all you readers can begin leaving your many comments below right about....now.

Typical Lib. Avoid a free discussion of ideas.
I was gonna go to the Wal Mart today and buy the new Barry CD, but now I know that he's an intolerant Lib, I've changed my mind.

I am sure it is not so much that he didn't want e "free discussion of ideas", but that he wanted to talk about his album, not political/social issues that Hasselbeck would bring up.

grumpyoldman, Manilow probably has more money than Haliburton, so he can afford to offend a few red staters.

I am sick and tired of entertainers feeling like they have the right to preach their ideals to me just because they have a medium to do so. I can't watch award shows for the same reason. Some jerk will spout off just because they can, and I am once again reminded of the realities that entertainers are supposed to provide an escape from.

I don't blame Barry for not wanting to be on the same stage as Elizabeth. I feel the same way. She's as every bit to the right as Rosie is to the left, yet she doesn't get near the amount of grief for it! Her squeeky voice and over glossed lips are hard enough to tolerate, but her opinions are worse. People claim Barry's standing up for his pal, Rosie. You see, Rosie's not even on the show now, and she's getting the blame for Barry's refusal to appear. He has a mind of his own. I realize he's been on the show a couple of times before, but maybe Elizabeth has since crossed the line with something that offended him. It's his right not to go.

It's Barry Manilow, people! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Any reason he remains off the airwaves is a good one.

Surely he knew Hasselbeck was part of the show when he agreed to go on. He did this deliberately to make a big stink that would get a lot of coverage.

There is a cause and effect here...there wouldn't have been political discussion, he could have pimped his CD and gone home...but, one of the cuts on the CD is a duet with none other than Rosie O'Donnell, so that would have been a subject of conversation. Barry M is standing in solidarity with his friend.

So far from all the comments, "Parasail Pete" echo's my sentiment the best.

If Barry Manilow doesn't want to go on and be interviewed by Elizabeth Hasselbeck it's his choice. Just because he is an entertainer he is not entitled to have an opinion? In addition why when he takes a simple stand he is "an intolerant Lib" to be boycotted while Hasselbeck is permitted to carry on regardless?

I agree w/Parasail Pete-who wants to see or hear anymore of that troll-doll than we have to? Last time I checked, people who actually like him didn't go to his shows for his simulating and insightful political veiwes anyways!

Since when is it mandatory to put up with rightwing (or leftwing) halfwits when promoting a product? What if it was some idiotic morning Zoo radio program that he wouldn't go on? Would anyone be shocked that he didn't want to deal with "The Maddog and Cooter"?
Going on these shows to pimp their products is degrading enough without having to put up with somebody like Hasselback.
I'm neutral on Manilow and his creative output, but he doesn't need to put up with that shit, and I respect him for taking a stand.

Barry Manilow is a half-wit. He easily could have said, lets talk about the album, not politics.
I will no longer ride in elevators because I don't want to hear the music of a moron...

I can't believe that people care about Hasselbeck this much, and think she's evil *just* for being conservative. I suppose on The View she must seem hard core right wing given the rest of the talking heads around her, but she's not very conservative at all.
Some people need to grow up and expand their horizons. Or is it only the right that has to "learn to be tolerant?"

It's one thing to not want to appear on a show when you don't like someone who is on it. Fine, that is his choice and he has every right to do so, but not only was he already booked on the show and there is an update to the story that he would appear on the show if producers kept Hassleback off the set for his appearance.
I'm sorry, but he is a prick. Who is he to tell someone that they can't appear on their own show? It would have been likeTrump asking Barbara Walters to remove Rosie from the set so he could show up for an interview.
At least Manilow can use the open schedule for another facial reconstruction and maybe squeeze in a botox session.

I'm sick and tired of being persecuted for being conservative. Well, not me personally, but it seems like there's this movement afoot that all people conservative are evil. Those nasty Republicans... if there were fewer of them on the planet it'd be a better place to live.
Get over it. Letterman may be an intolerant liberal like the rest of them, but you don't see people like Kelsey Grammer and Robert Duvall (two known Republican celebrities) refusing to go on the show because of his politics. You're there to talk about your upcoming project, not spew venom about the state of the world.

This is a blog about the entertainment industry and that's primarily out in Hollyweird, so the people writing and being written about are most likely from that area. The only thing that needs to be said and/or known is "California". In a word it explains all the liberal oddness on this site and in "the industry".

Barry Manilow's refusal to go on a show AFTER he had already agreed to be on it was so childish, but I'm sure he is enjoying the publicity. How intolerant and discriminating it is to not even be able to be on the same stage as someone who doesn't share his political views. I agree with some of the Republican ideas, and some of the Democratic ideas. I actually have always been a fan, BUT, I wish that I could let him know (so he could be relieved) that I will never buy any more of his CD's, because I cannot guarantee that I'm thinking as a Democrat that day. I think all Republicans should refrain from buying his music or going to his concerts-I'm sure a man of such high "standards" would not want any money from people he hates so much.
