Recently, The Onion had a really funny article called "Nation Suddenly Feels Old After Seeing Nick-At-Nite Lineup" (funniest line: "Why are they playing shows from 1988? That's only...fuck, that's 19 years ago? Oh God, I've wasted my life."). But it seems like even The Onion can't keep up with the rapid changes in the nostalgia network's lineup. Nick at Nite has not only rocketed past the eighties and started concentrating on sitcoms from the nineties (Home Improvement, Fresh Prince), but they've decided to start airing shows from the 2000s as well. How do I know this? I turned on Nick at Nite last night and saw an episode of... George Lopez.
Yeah, you read that correctly. the George Lopez show, which just got cancelled by ABC after a five year run, is now on a network whose mission has been to give people a chance to see the shows they grew up watching. Yes, it's an OK family sitcom that seems to fit very well in the family-oriented Nick at Nite lineup. But how can a person get nostalgic for a show that a) not many people watched in the first place and b) just got cancelled three months ago?
It makes me wonder if Nick at Nite and its sister channel, TV Land, aren't making a subtle shift away from nostalgia. TV Land is not only showing movies, for crissakes, but they recently added the currently-running Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to their schedule. What gives? I mean, I could accept a move away from sixties sitcoms like I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched to sitcoms a bigger chunk of the audience might remember from their childhoods. But... George Lopez? It hasn't been off the air long enough for us to get nostalgic over it.
By the way, take a look at the network's new logo (on their website). The splatter that's part of the new logo leads me to believe that Nick at Nite is going to be tied more closely into Nickelodeon's family programming -- it looks like the logo is getting "slimed" -- and will get away from nostalgia. But maybe I'm just being paranoid.
What do you think? Drop us a comment and take the polls below and let us know.

It is totally getting away from being a nostalgia-themed network...Even the commericals are younger-themed. But you gotta go where the money is I guess.
I do believe Friends and the Nanny are their next shows in the next few years.

It's really kind of sad. Looks like they're desperate to compete with Disney.
In this case I guess it's good I don't have cable!

George Lopez is a racist bastard and shouldn't be anywhere near a family channel.
Could these newer programs possibly be cheaper to run than the classics? I can't imagine that as everyone was aware of the money to be made in reruns, but I can't think of another logical reason.

I remember when Nick at Nite debuted and shared the channel with Nickelodeon. They'd come on at 7 central time and show "Dennis the Menace," "The Donna Reed Show" and the "Nick-at-Nite movie, and that was it. As the channel expanded and brought out new shows from the past, it was exciting to see these gems that I had only heard about. I just can't see how "Fresh Prince" stacks up with "Taxi," "Bob Newhart Show" or "The Mary Tyler Moore Show?" Bring back Rob Petrie!

It's getting away from the nostalgia & it's sad. I remember when Nick at Nite was still on the same channel as Nickeloden. Then, they showed: Welcome Back, Kotter, Laugh-In & Lancelot Link Secret Chimp. Those were nostalgia shows.

Brings to mind another Onion headline from long ago:
"U.S. Dept. Of Retro Warns: 'We May Be Running Out Of Past' "
Seriously, what's left after you grind M*A*S*H, Cosby, Family Ties and Roseanne into the ground? They have to show SOMETHING. On the other hand, I could totally do without George "racists cancelled my show" Lopez.

LOLOLOL My screen is showing an ad for this right below this post. I know, I had a WTF? moment when I saw the ad for George Lopez on Nick at Nite. I think they probably are trying to get more into Disney's market, which is sad. They were showing some great time waster shows, but we now have RTN (retro Television NEtwork) that is showing all the same shows as Nick at Nite, and even some they didn't.

Bill, Heather, Nick at Nite is still on the same channel as Nickelodeon. You might be confusing it with TV Land.

So what else is new? MTV stopped running music, The History channel runs fictional movies, The Sci-Fi channel runs WWE wrestling (OK, vaguely sci-fi) and C-span runs horror (oh, that just congress? nevermind)
nobody sticks to their mission statements anymore

I hate the fact that Nick at Nite has started showing more recent episodes. It seems like NaN has become a place for generally syndicated shows. Much like TBS in the afternoons or local Fox/UPN affiliates. You know block hours of programs like Still Standing, Yes Dear, Seinfeld. I would much rather have nostalgic shows but either way I wouldn't blame George Lopez. Because this has been going on way too long. And since Nick at Nite has already converted I say bring on Lopez. It beats Roseanne! I personally never saw much of his show but I loved his stand up. Why You Cryin? is hilarious... I'm not Latino but I got nearly all the jokes. Do I think ABC was racist for cancelling his show? I don't know... but I do know that while they cancelled George Lopez... Craptastic Jim Belushi still got to continue and quite frankly Jim Belushi needs to leave showbusiness!
And... while TV Land is gearing towards modern programming. They still air older shows like Andy Griffinth, Sanford and Son and Goodtimes. My 13 year old sister loves Sanford and Son and Goodtimes. So I thank TV Land for still having some nostalgia and giving younger kids a chance to enjoy classic programming.
As for Nick at Nite. If you're going to show recent shows... stick with good ones like News Radio(my Nick at Nite isn't even showing NR anymore. I've never watched the whole series and I only get one episode a day on TBS so I tivo it!), Just Shoot Me, Fresh Prince, Full House, even Lopez. Quit showing Roseanne and Cosby show so much. They really have beat them to death!

If you can allow me to wax nostalgic, my brother and I are now 20 and 24 respectively. When we were kids, during the summer our mom would let us fall asleep in front of the TV in the den during the Nick at Nite "Block Party Summer". We would watch hours of I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, and more that I can no longer remember. We will kick your ass at an TV trivia game because of this. (Also, we know this may not have been my mom's best parenting move but hey, everyone makes mistakes).
I understand more recent sitcoms need to make an appearance but I feel like they should stick to shows that made an impact. Roseanne is fine. The Cosby Show, awesome. I could see Seinfeld. I guess Friends or Everybody Loves Raymond would work although since every other station reruns that, what would be the point? Maybe even Fresh Prince qualifies. But George Lopez ran for 5 years and most people have never even seen it.

There are so many obscure and OLD sitcoms that Nick At Night / TV Land could be showing that it just makes me wonder what they're thinking.

It is time them to set up a third channel "RetroTube".
For the old Nick at Night was how I was able to watch Dobey Gillis, I Spy, and Route 66.

I remember being in middle school ten years ago and watching the great Nick At Nite Marathons during the summer: Bewitched, I Love Lucy, Mary Tyler Moore, Happy Days, The Munsters. Plus my absolute favorite of them all, Get Smart. It's a real shame some of these shows have even stopped running on TV Land.
