NBC's version of The IT Crowd could be dead already

The IT Crowd"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

It would appear that the adaptation of UK sit-com The IT Crowd might need more than Roy's famous reboot fix. According to reports, NBC is set to pull the plug on the midseason comedy. If you haven't been playing along at home, the show is to be a joint production between Universal Media Studios and Freemantle Media. It's an ensemble comedy, set in an IT department, starring Joel McHale (The Soup) and Rocky Carroll (Invasion).

I really wanted to like this one, and was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I liked the original, Joel McHale is a funny guy, and while I spend my mornings, evenings, and nights watching or writing about television, most of my days are spent in an IT setting. On the other hand, I'm still a little cross with the powers that be over at NBC for what they let happen to Coupling. So, any optimism I had for IT would best be described as guarded.

The other curious bit about this news is that it could mean that NBC will go through the whole season without one new half hour comedy. The network is currently casting a pilot called Kath & Kim, based on an Australian hit, that could end up as a midseason replacement, but at this point that seems iffy at best. It's becoming quite evident that the successful transition of The Office across the pond is the exception, rather than the rule.
