In the world of digital image manipulation there are two types of Photoshop users: those who use it like an artist uses a brush, and those who use it like a 1st grader uses glue to paste cutouts on a worksheet. In today's lesson, we'll be talking about the 1st grader.
Take a look at the image of Ugly Betty's America Ferrera from the cover of October's Glamour magazine. Many reports are saying that America's head has been sloppily pasted to a thinner woman's body. From the most recent image of America on the left, it certainly looks like a digital imaging hash job. The head seems a bit off kilter. And, take a look at her neck. Isn't it just a tad thinner and longer than we are used to seeing?
Also, take a look at Ferrera's arms on that cover. Maybe it was the way the shot was taken (which, if done with a normal camera, was not done well), but they look extremely thin. Compare them to what you see in the other image. There's definitely a lot more meat to them than the Glamour cover shows.
Of course, the magazine is denying that any digital manipulation has occurred. Emails sent out to angry readers by Reader Services are saying that the picture is really that of America Ferrara and that she is a smaller size on her bottom (6/8) and a larger size on her top (10). Sorry, but the image I see looks a lot more even than that!
Look, if Glamour did digitally manipulate the image to sell magazines they made a mistake. They would have sold more magazines if they put America and her average-sized body on the cover. That's because women are tired of seeing pictures of practically emaciated women on the front of their magazines. They want to see average-sized women like themselves. Here's hoping that Glamour, or America herself, respond to these allegations.

I saw this cover while standing at the checkout line so I had plenty of time to study it and new immediately that it had been enhanced and badly too. It is totally out of proportion. The arms are too long for the body and the body is too small for the head. It actually looks worse in person than the picture online. I've seen America on the view and other shows, and while she is thinner than she appears on Ugly Betty, she is not as thin as it appears on this cover, nor does she have arms like an orangutan. I totally agree that showing her as she really is, which is lovely, would have been a welcome relief to women and more in keeping with the message of America's show Ugly Betty.

ok i think we are taking this a little too far...
to get others caught up the first commentor is speculating that they took a headshot of america and photoshopped it on a slimmer models body. Only problem was the slimmer woman had fat arms so than we went in and photoshopped a new set or arms on to the new body.
no.

Every single cover of every magazine with a human on it has been photoshopped. There is no question that they trimmed America down digitally, they do it to absolutely everyone. Have a gander at what Redbook did to Faith Hill: http://jezebel.com/gossip/distort-by-numbers/the-annotated-guide-to-making-faith-hill-hot-278978.php

wasn't this the story of the first episode? isn't this how she got her job at the magazine? NOT letting this happen. irony

She kinda looks like Mandy Moore. Maybe the editor used the wrong picture.

It's a given that the photo was manipulated. All of the major fashion mags do that.
The issue in this case, is that the photoshopping was very obviously and horribly done. Especially since the photos of America IN the issue look way better than the overdone cover.
And in my opinion, it was very unnecessary, since America is a very beautiful woman anyway.

It's rather naive say that Glamour "made a mistake. They would have sold more magazines if they put America and her average-sized body on the cover. That's because women are tired of seeing pictures of practically emaciated women on the front of their magazines. They want to see average-sized women like themselves."
This past week, the topic everyone has been talking about is how "fat" Britney Spears is. Now, granted she is not in the shape she once was, and she has execrable clothing sense, but she's still a smaller than average woman. Yet she's being called fat.
The people who publish fashion magazine know what sells, or they wouldn't put it on their covers. As long as we still buy them, those are the images we'll see.

This isn't unreal. She doesn't look any thinner in the pic on the right than she does in the one on the left...They just want to stir up some controversy.

I think the way America, looks in real life is AWESOME!!!!! she is very very attractive and magazines that have to "copy n paste" to try to sell more magazines should be pimp slapped.
I still laugh at the Mens Health Mag, with Andy Roddick on the cover with his HUGE fake arms. Its like WTF???? the guy is already in top shape and you need to give him some body builder arms?

it's such a shame that they butchered her cover photo. i think she's one of the most beautiful natural-looking girls. a real role model. the woman's got curves and she's proud of them! let her show them off!! we need more americas and less lindsays. :)

I think she is very pretty. It does not matter that she is NOT pencil thin. What is wrong with these people. Most women out in the real don't look at good as she does. So what is the big deal? Plus she if they did fix the photo of her, she is not the ONLY celeb who has had that done for them.

The picture is digitally enhanced, the proportions are off on more than just the body. She really is slightly larger on the top half than the bottom half of her body, the other picture reveals that. But her head is a little too big and a little too off center, let alone it doesn't look natural for the way she holds herself. Her arms may look thinner, but that is also how she's holding them. I know that holding yourself differently makes you look thinner or larger (I've taken loads of art classes with models, each position looks different). It looks more like they copied and pasted different pictures of her together, which is a shame because she's a very pretty girl.

Glamour just doesn't have many connections to the real world. Altering Ms. Ferrera's pictures are an insult to all of us and her. So what if she's not some anorexic bean pole? She's real and sho looks great too.

Sorry, I like America but there is no way she is a 6/8. She more like a 13/14-and that's OK. There's nothing, NADA, wrong with her. She looks great regardless of her 'real' size.

I would hope America would be appalled when she saw this cover. If all of you recall Ugly Betty was dead set against one of the models being digitally enhanced and skinnyfied for the cover of Mode. I think this was done without her knowing or if it really is her she's fallen for Hollywood's anorexia syndrome and then I say Shame on You America. PS - you look like a million bucks in the black dress

i was just talking about this cover an hour ago while doing some shopping. it immediately caught my eye because it looked nothing like her from the neck down. she's such a pretty girl, though! i don't understand why 'airbrushing' is considered okay, when all celebrities talk about is how "real" they are, just like everyone else.

Her head looks like a bobble head. You can plainly see the picture is off. What was Glamour thinking?

I think America is a great actress, so this is nothing personal against her, but isn't the entire accolade about 'curvy' actresses getting more roles just a nice way of saying that fat girls are finally catching a break? In many cases curvy is just a nice way of saying fat. On that note, being a size 6, I never considered myself curvy or really fat, but hearing that this 'curvy' girl is a size 6 made me second-guess myself. Now I wonder what size everyone really is!
