(S02E13) Last week's episode put the wheels in motion for the midseason finale of Kyle XY. "Leap of Faith" not only answered questions (what was the connection between Adam and that Jessi-looking woman) but also raised tons of new ones (who is keeping Adam alive and why). Even if most of the fans have been pleased with the pace at which the show answers questions, the wait between now and the midseason premiere will be quite long.I must warn you that I decided to not take notes while watching "Leap of Faith." I wanted to watch the episode straight through, as it was meant to be, without pausing to jot down my first impressions. This means my review will be shorter and I may have forgot to mention something below that you think was of importance; if so please mention it in comments. The upside to this, I was able to enjoy the midseason finale and concentrate on it as a whole. Don't worry, when the series comes back, I'll go back to note taking.
Route 12
Kyle and Jessi set off on their quest for answers. Thanks to Foss' clues, Kyle discovers that the ring is more than a key (and jewelry!), it also contains a map. They eventually arrive at a café where Adam and the woman in the picture hung out a lot. There, an old man recognizes in them Adam and the woman. He makes a few revelations but nothing spectacular. While watching the scenes at the café, I kept wondering why Kyle and Jessi didn't ask more questions to the old man. I envisioned them pretending to be the couple in order to get the old man to dish a bit more.
I really wanted to believe that Jessi, now accepting who she really is, had overwritten her programming somehow. But, in the final scenes, it looks like the program is still very much present and had a sort of fail safe to ensure she would perform her mission no matter what. Jessi says that she couldn't control herself when she connected with Kyle. Was she telling the truth or did she decide to gather the information willingly? The latter opens up many possible paths. Maybe she was in on Madacorp's mission all along and was pretending with Kyle. Maybe she wasn't pretending but as she learned more about herself and Adam, she decided to get the info to give it to Madacorp in exchange for her freedom. Or maybe she was just being a curious teenager.
No matter why she did it, the more pressing question regarding Jessi is about her fate. Is Jessi dead or alive? (I'm putting my money on the fact that she is alive.) What I wonder is why she jumped off. Was she really feeling bad for getting the information in Kyle's brain and wanted to make sure no one would get what she now possessed? Or did she jump in order to get away from Kyle long enough for her to reach Ballantine? Many questions and, sadly, too many months for us to speculate on the answers.
Route 12 not only offered us a Jessi/Kyle showdown, but it was also the setting for a major revelation: Adam is still alive. I was so not expecting to see him in there. I was sure the Jessi-like woman was the one the teens would find in the cabin. Sadly, the episode didn't give us much clues as to why Adam is being kept alive and by whom. Interestingly, Kyle and Jessi note that no one has been in the cabin for a while. Yet, one would expect that someone come here and there to keep an eye on Adam. Not many people can enter the room. We know that Taylor has a ring, Ballantine had one at one point (some people still speculate that Kyle's ring was bought by Taylor and not Ballantine), and the woman in the picture surely had one too. We could also throw in Foss. At first, I didn't think he had a ring because he helped Kyle get Ballantine's ring; if he had one, wouldn't it have been easier to just give it to Kyle? But then, Foss knew about the map hidden within the ring. One could argue that Adam told him about it and that Foss doesn't have a ring. Another could add that Foss disappeared for a while and that he could have helped Kyle get Ballantine's ring because Foss knew he needed his to get to the cabin.
Tragers, P.I.s
As expected after watching the last scene of "Lockdown," Nicole and Stephen revealed everything they learned about Kyle. It was fun watching the Tragers tap into their inner private investigators. But what was most interesting was them trying to get Josh's "Kyle is an alien" notes. Josh was the first one to think Kyle was an alien, yet, when his family now thinks he may be right, Josh claims that they shouldn't use his notes and accept Kyle for who he is: a Trager. It was really touching to see Josh claim Kyle was his brother. Even if this investigation had the Tragers argue, it helped them get back together and work as a family.
I wished that Declan would have been more cooperating with the Tragers. Was he afraid that the Tragers couldn't handle the entire truth? Or maybe he didn't say a word so Kyle could reveal everything on his own terms. One thing is sure, Declan is a very good secret keeper.
Being the Foss fan that I am, I was really happy to see him end up in the Tragers' living room and confirm to them a few of their leads. At first, I thought it was a bit out of character for him to cooperate with them. After thinking about it, he probably just did it so they would back off a bit. Nonetheless, it was a risky move. Even if Stephen did see Foss in the C.I.R. and heard him defend Kyle, he is not about to become best buds with the man.
Overall, I enjoyed the episode. It not only have the Tragers finally understand more about Kyle and work together, but it also gave us a lot to chew on and ponder. It will be particularly interesting to see what Jessi, if alive, will do with the data she now has.
Questions to ponder on for the next few months
- Is Jessi dead or alive? If she is alive, what will she do with the information now stored in her brain?
- Who is keeping Adam alive and why? Will he ever be revived?
- Will the Tragers really wait for Kyle to return and do nothing?
- Why did Foss decide to open up to the Tragers in the end? Did he really expect them to stop their investigating? What is his next move? Will he go to the cabin or stay put?
- Did Amanda really leave for NYC or did she turn around at the last minute? Will she forgive Kyle?
- Will Andy's chemo therapy work?
- Will Taylor turn on Ballantine?
- What will Ballantine do with the information if Jessi really gives it to him?
- Will Stephen go back to Madacorp?

Oh, maybe it's just me, but I thought the Jessi jump was a clear suicide attempt. She didn't like being weak-minded and doing bad things, and she didn't want to betray Kyle, so she took the final way out. Given the height of the jump and the portrayal of the landing area as rocky, I think that's it for Jessi.

Jessi has to be alive, she's a "wicked hot mentally scrambled science experiment to invade your life."
Really I think it was a suicide attempt but that she'll survive ala super human kyle tricks.

Well, since the actress was signed as a series regular, her fate is pretty much a given ;)

The jump was an escape route with dangers involved only a pre-programmed person/machine would take but not a self-conscious being like Kyle. That development was clear when they told us that she was programmed to steal knowledge from Kyle. How else could she flee from Kyle except in a way he would not dare to follow?

Great episode.
I think Adam is a clone.
And am I missing something but did they ever say what info they want from Kyle?

Oreo: Cloning. Why didn't I think of that! As for what they want from Kyle, my understanding was that they wanted Kyle (and not only the info) because they knew he downloaded the Zzyzx and Madacorp secrets. I thought they wanted to terminate him, which is why they wanted Jessi to bring him back. But having only the info could be beneficial to them as well.... but if they discover that he does have secret info store in there, you can bet they'll come looking for him!

I want to know if, even though Jessie took the information from Kyle's brain, whether he still retains it or not. Did she merely copy it? Or take it all leaving him with nothing? And if she did take it completely, can he get it back?
I LOVE the fact that while the family is trying to dissect Kyle's actions, its Josh who won't participate, standing up for Kyle and demanding the rest of the family treat him as he is - their son and brother. I also liked how Declan proved what a true friend he is and, even under pressure, won't reveal Kyle's secrets. And Yippee for Foss being back! I'm having second thoughts about Emily, and think she might be playing both sides of the track at this point.

2008 :-p
And cloning is so easy. Kyle and Jessi are clones grown in test tubes, so why not make some Adam clones to weed out the bad guys?
So I'm sticking by clones, as i nthe one that "dead" is the clone, and this one is the real one.
But of course I'm most likely wrong because what happened to this Adam then?

How annoying that ABC learned their lesson about long breaks in seasons with Lost, yet it seems that ABC Family didn't attend that class.
*sigh*

Discosis: I agree with you that long break are... well, too long! However, ABC Family learned that lesson from other networks like Sci Fi who air seasons in two big chunks.

This was supposed to be season 2, and that was it. Luckily ABC Family ordered 10 (?) more episodes for this season. Just think if this was the season we could very well be waiting 10 more months.
And why are you comparing this to Lost? That just seems really dumb. This season starts in Feb. and ends in May with only 16 episodes. That means the wait is 9 months, how is that not a long wait?

I believe I heard that the show wasn't picked up for the whole season until the first few episodes had aired, so maybe this break was originally going to be a full season break.

That's not true, it was many many months ago when they said they would give it a "full season" because ABC Family loved what the creators were doing with the show.

Let's settle the matter of when the networked ordered more episodes of Season 2:
The Futon Critic announced on May 11 that the 2nd season would now have 23 episodes: http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7383. This means that the network announced it that same week and that the show probably learned of it the week before.

Didn't Foss leave all the time and tell Kyle he would be back tomorrow, or he just had to go with no explaination? I'm pretty sure Foss is now taking care of Adam, and no one had been to the cabin in a while because that was when Adam was at Madacorp getting his brain fried.

The cabin where Baylis is on life support was not touched in longer time than when Foss was at Madacorp. I also think that if Foss took Baylin there, he left the place otherwise undisturbed, because he is clever and paranoid that way. Rather, the two week absence earlier in the season might have been Foss checking on him or there is a true twist and Taylor is the secret rescuer or perhaps he is keeping Baylin alive for other purposes.
At heart, Foss believes in family love, the loss of his own family haunts him and is his weakness under the Brain Machine at Madacorp. So I can see him helping the Tragers, if only minimally.
Jessi is alive, probably despite herself and will be compelled against her newly discovered will to go and report to Madacorp.
I still think the Tragers are hopelessly idiotic feel-goods and I have no patience for them or their struggles at all.
I really liked the senile old man in the cafe, he knew what he was seeing and he was right! Kyle and Jessie, despite what we saw in the ep, do not talk enough to each other or understand each other very well. I hope they have to interact more next season.

KYLE XY ROCKS!!!! I hope Season 3 starts soon because I wanna know if Jessi is alive or dead. I think Jessi will be alive she's strong, smart, and fast and is a young teenage girl who was created at Zyzyxz by someone who is not alive no more. Althogh her character is played by a 23-year-old Jaimie Alexander she still looks young for her age. well i hope season 3 will be more dramatized and hopefully Jessi is alive.

Remember Jessi was in the chamber longer so her mind had more time to develop than Kyle's. She had suggested to him jokingly when she asked if they were the only ones created the way they were and Kyle said as far as he could tell explaining that he thought he was the only one until he met her so Jessi suggested it was a competition but Kyle said he didn't see it like that at which point Jessi said maybe he should -- then she joked that maybe she was stronger, smarter and even faster and they raced to the cabin where they found Baylin in and he appeared to just be in a coma.
I'd like to see him wake up eventually and also meet the Tragers. What if Baylin met Taylor again? What if Kyle confronts Taylor over the betrayal? Taylor and Foss already argued about it. What about a meeting between Emily and Baylin and/or Ballantine meeting Baylin but Baylin will have to have Foss near him for safety should Ballantine try to harm him or come after Kyle again.
