Weeds: Sh*t Highway

Matthew Modine(S03E04) The Modine has landed! This week, we got our first look at Sullivan Groff and, through him, the up-and-coming community of Majestic. It's probably a bad sign that Sullivan regards Agrestic as a potential toilet bowl, but who cares? His hair looked fabulous!

Sullivan didn't waste any time putting his looks and charm to use on his new neighbors. After schmoozing with the city council members, he managed to (unsuccessfully) hit on both Nancy and Celia--not bad for a thirty-minute episode. Something tells me that he won't take no for an answer in Celia's case. Either way, it's great to see Matthew Modine again. No offense to Kevin Nealon, but I've been waiting for a hot older man to turn up on this show.

This season has focused a great deal on Nancy's lack of control, as a mother and as a drug dealer. All it took was a brief encounter with the campus security guard from Season One to remind her that she's no longer the "scary lady drug dealer with thugs." Nancy has had many different sources of protection in the past: Peter, Heylia, Conrad, etc. Now she's on her own, and even a random college student can scare her.

Her paranoia is definitely justified, though. With Peter's partner hanging around and U-Turn leaving threatening messages on her cell phone, Nancy has a lot on her plate. What's a former editor of Civil War textbooks to do? Joining the workforce was a great start. I thought it was sweet of Shane to pad his Mom's resume and give her some words of encouragement. Getting a legitimate job is the first smart thing that Nancy's done all season, even if she does have to put up with sexual harrassment.

Doug was, thankfully, up to his old tricks this week. The Agrestic City Council meetings are always hilarious, and this week's scenes were no exception. Doug maneuvered his way into the position of Interim Council Member, and now he and Celia will be colleagues. This should be good. Celia and Doug work much better as enemies than as lovers.

Silas made the most of his community service hours by selling off some of U-Turn's brick to his fellow trash collectors. I was amused by Mrs. Gruber's presence, and I'll certainly never look at ostrich meat the same way again. Perhaps she'll get some love from "the Groff" in a later episode. Nancy's attempt to forbid Silas to sell drugs was pretty pitiful, and I'm curious to see how Silas' involvement in the drug operation will change their relationship. For his own sake, I hope that he won't show up on U-Turn's radar.

Heylia and Conrad didn't get much screen time this week. Last week, Julia wondered how Heylia would handle the U-Turn situation, and I'm right there with her. It looks like Conrad's new operation will be up and running soon, but how long will he be working for U-Turn?

What was the deal with the "Battle Buddy" scene? I'm not sure what the Weeds writers are trying to do with the Army scenes, but it isn't working for me. This week's head-scratching twist was the last straw. The heavy-handed political messages were bad enough, but now we have to deal with some government conspiracy subplot? I love Andy Botwin, but he's no Jason Bourne. The only thing I like about this new twist is that it will bring Andy back to Agrestic where he belongs.

My real problem with Army subplot is that it has always felt unnecessary. Why branch out when there's so much going on in Agrestic? Why take Andy out of the Botwin household when his funniest scenes are with Nancy and the kids? For now, I'm going to hope for the best and focus on that gorgeous Modine hair.

What's your take on the "Battle Buddy" twist?
