Once again the fate of David Tennant's role as the Doctor on Doctor Who is in question. Earlier this year there were rumors that Tennant would not resume his role for the fourth series of the popular science fiction program. However, those rumors were quickly refuted.
Now comes word directly from the BBC that the show will not be returning for a fifth series until 2010 (the fourth series premieres in 2008). It was postponed to allow Tennant to play Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company late next year. A spokesperson for the show said it was too early to comment on whether or not Tennant would return for a fifth series.
That doesn't mean you should be wailing uncontrollably and rending your clothing quite yet. To fill the gap Tennant will star in three Doctor Who specials, to air in 2009, that will be written by Russell T. Davies. In the meantime, another Christmas special, starring Kylie Minogue, will air at the end of this year. And, in the fourth series (BIT OF A SPOILER ALERT HERE) look for Catherine Tate to return as the Doctor's partner.

Interesting, I'm sure Sci-fi Channel is going to be pissed off, they have nothing to show.

yea don't get me started on davie t moving Freema to Torchwood. They should have sent Catherine Tate to Torchwood instead. Oh well its only for a few episodes, but if this hiatus thing is done i thing its pretty stupid, they should have something happen to the doctor and sally sparrow and martha jones are looking for him, i duno they should do something though.

@ rich....read that article again: "The fourth series, which is in the process of being filmed, will see Tennant with his new assistant Catherine Tate, who follows on from Freema Agyeman - also set to return - and Billie Piper."
it says that catherine tate follows on from freema agyeman (also set to return) and billie piper. it does not say that billie piper is set to return.

Stephen, you're right. I had to read it a few times to make the connection. I have updated the post to reflect the change.

I agree. There's no way Bille Piper is back. That would have been at or near the top of the Telegraph piece and in every other UK website and tabloid. I just think you misread the story.

I had read somewhere that Billie missed the show and wouldn't mind returning. However, considering most sneak peaks that I've read have focused on Freema and Catherine, I'm shocked they'd shoehorn her into the 4th season that overflows w/ female companions. While I love Freema's Martha and wasn't crazy about Billie's character, I must admit that Rose was a bit more useful (I don't understand how Martha lacked basic instincts) and Rose clearly had a better relationship with the Doctor. Maybe she'll appear at the season finale to regain her role as the Doctor's favored companion.

Sorry, but I think you mis-read the artical from the newspaper. It says that Agyeman is set to return, not Piper.

They can't have a season with the Doctor, what the hell would they call it?
I also think it's lame to have charters move to Torchwood for several reasons, other countries might not see it, and it sucks. Mainly the fact it sucks and seems to ignore everything that DW has done.

King,
No, I meant that they were going to put images of their clothing to canvas. Silly man!
Yes, yes, I just corrected the post. Blame it on post-Labor Day sluggishness.

Oreo, how exactly has Torchwood ignored everything that DW has done?
Lets see
-After the battle of Canary Wharf, Captain Jack's unit of Torchwood was the only thing left of the organization
-Multiple mentions to Saxon
-The Master even sent off Captain Jacks team in TLOTTL
I think it would be safe to say that we will get some mention of that in the new season of Torchwood.
Also, nowhere does any of this state that we would have any Doctor Who without the Doctor.

I like the rumor I heard that James Nesbit (most recently of the excellent Jekyll series) was in line if Tennant decides not to go.
If Davies and Tennant leave, I see a lot of potential for a Steven Mofatt run Who with Nesbit as the Doc.

To me it seems that Torchwood is set in a world where everyone in Britain has ignored all the alien things of Doctor Who, and are shocked to see what they see.

Oreo,
I have never gotten that from Torchwood. However, look back at all of the new Doctor Who. How many "huge earth shattering events" have occurred and yet life goes on as normal? Think of all the "excuses" (Gwen even mentioned one in the first episode of Torchwood) the people have been told to explain away these happenings.
