I'll blame my relative indifference toward the anime series itself, but it was only recently that I had heard anything about a live-action Dragon Ball Z flick.
Last month, IGN had a brief write-up about the alleged adaptation, but didn't have much other than speculation. Now, however, comes word that the movie will begin shooting in Montreal sometime in the near future, with plans to wrap production by next July. There has been no official word on who will star in it, or who will make it, though Roland Emmerich's name was tossed around.
Emmerich was behind such craptacular populist fare as Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow, but according to this article, he's now involved with the Fantastic Voyage remake, also shooting in Montreal. That doesn't necessarily mean he's NOT involved with Dragon Ball Z, but I'd like to believe he isn't. I was never a huge fan of the cartoon series, but I can think of about five people better suited to helming this project.
Dragon Ball Z was an anime series that served as the continuation of the manga from artist and writer Akira Toriyama. Like most anime, its plots are somewhat convoluted, but it essentially focused on a hero, Goku, who defends the world from various aliens and monsters with help from his friends and allies.
So, Dragon Ball Z fans, who do you think should direct this movie, and who would you like to see star in it? Or, should they even make the movie at all?

I personally think that a live-action movie would end up being a disappointment and not live up to how good the series was...

This is one live-action that is sure to fail.
Just like the silly Mario Brothers movie. It'll end up just like it, because the charm of the Z series was the in its very nature, having very Japanese things in it.
Hollywood will mess it up.

damn, why they gotta mess with DBZ i wanted at least another animated series but not a live movie. i was very skeptical about transformers but that turned out to be a pleasanta surprise. i still don't know though. i don't think they can get megan fox to play a female lead.

I can't possibly imagine how you could do justice to DBZ in live action. It's full of flying super saiyans, an angry namek, and stuff blowing up and getting destroyed over and over again, the budget would be ridiculous for all those special effects.....but hey, if they can make evan almighty, they can make DBZ.

This is probably the worst idea I've ever heard. Dragonball Z was an awesome anime that contained characters and abilities that could never be replicated in live action. Seeing Goku's or Vegeta's hair in live action would suck very hard. I hope this is pure conjecture for all the DBZ fans out there

Plot for movie:
-Evil power is coming to rule the world/galaxy/universe/etc
-Only Goku can save the day (no matter how hard everyone else tries they just end up getting hurt or dying)
-Goku will spend 80 of the 90 minute run time "Powering up"
-Bad guy will be defeated.
Don't get me wrong I loved the original DB and DBZ but when the series caught up to where the manga was we got ridiculous episodes of nothing happening again and again and again. This movie does not need to be made.

Great just great this movie is gonna get panned. I love the show and especially when it aired on TOONAMI but there doesn't need to be a live action version of it.

This movie will be awesome no matter how good it actually is-- as long as they stay somewhat true to the series. I used to think that a DBZ movie couldn't be done because of the special effects, but then I saw Superman Returns in summer 06. Then came the epiphany-- this dream that I have had since I was very small can be fulfilled! I am 100% positive that I will walk out of the premiere with an enormous list of complaints. But hell, we've had nothing DBZ-related to criticize in years.
It's not like they're going back and changing the series. At least they're just keeping interest alive, whether it's worthy of the DBZ name or not. There will be MORE DBZ!!! Isn't that reason enough to be excited as hell for now?

I doubt they would ever make a live action film for the series. I am a huge fan of the show…its prolly my fav anime. “Hollywood” knows there wouldn’t be a fan base for its general audience. This would mean that only a small/peripheral production label would be attached to it (like FOXsearchlight). That would mean an inevitability low budget production and shoty storylines.
Who could care the less right. The show is not exactly the best icon for real action… infact, I’d argue its more about character interaction and growth than real action. Fans want to see something new and exciting happening with the show. I know I would. A production of a live-action DBZ movie (it’d have to be DBZ bc it’s the most realistically feasible timeframe) would be welcoming as a nostalgic effect for its fans….I hope that they do start something with it....most of the original Japanese audience would be adults by now and it’s already past nearing the 25th anniversary. When, other than now, would be a better time to do something like this?!

come on guys! have some faith! this movie can really be pulled off with the right people and TIME AND PATIENCE. think about it, get the original writer of dbz to come in and co-direct with someone who is familiar with live action films (transformers...sick movie by the way) and let Akira shout out the ideas and the director play it out. Then put lucas films on for special effects or some other highly revered special effects team and let them team up. For the actors i believe that they sould be straight up asian kung fu artists and just subtitle the movie. after the many years of rumors of dbz becoming live action i think its about time to start doing something about it. mistakes will be made but we cannot let fear of ruining something so good stop us. God took a great chance to make the human race. this is just a movie... so let them try it. all its going to take now is TIME AND PATIENCE and the right thinking and the original writers (especially the writer from the dead zone, that was one of the best dbz movies. uh that was a good one.) and sit down and plan this thing out. let them take their time. it'll be worth it. and if anybody knows how to get a hold of the original writers or any leads please email me at onwarf@yahoo.com
thanks guys and peace out. nothing is impossible.

come on guys! have some guts! i am a HUGE DBZ fan and think that if the right people are picked to direct this movie and do the special effects as well... they could pull this off. Think about it, have the writer of dbz come in and direct with someone who is familiar with live action and let them work together. like the director from transformers. (which was amazing) then have straight up asian real kung fu artists come and do the movie and just subtitle it. get lucas film (star wars) to do the special effects of someone of great respect and throw in some really good time and patience into this thing and it could definitely happen! i am soo ready to see this thing come to life. there have been rumors about this movie out for years now! so im ready. mistakes are going to be made and i believe that its worth a try. come on. God took a chance with the human race. that was a pretty big risk. this is just a movie and i'm totally willing to put time and more patience into this. if "they" take their time with this, then it can definitely be pulled off. if anybody knows how to get in contact with the writer of dbz or a lead, please email me. onwarf@yahoo.com oh, and the writer of the movie dead zone should totally have a part in this too. that was one of the best dbz movies. later ya'll and thanks for readin. I am a huge DBZ fan. I saw the last episode of dbz with buu, then i thought it was over. then i went a few months without cable and then i found out that there was dragonball gt. In my opinion, i think that making a live action movie would be great. it would be like dragonball z going into the final frontier. but i am still skeptical, like how are they gonna get the hair to stand up on end. and how are they gonna be able to show so much destruction and death. I would still rather see something new to the series like, Dragonball AF. If the commercials for this movie are good when it goes into theatres, i might go see it. but still live action has nothing on the animated series.

Hmmm..interesting. I think alot of WWE wrestlers can fit the cast pretty close. Oh I also read some where that they got $100 mill. to do the movie. That kinda money with the right people should give us a good movie to watch. Come on if they can do the Matrix, Superman Return and the X-Men movies that good, they can and BETTER do DBZ right.

i grew up on transformers and the movie i think was freaking awsome... if we can make a movie like that, then i think a live action of dbz could work, but it shouldnt be rushed into it. whomever will do it should take their time and work it out. look at superman or batman, those went pretty well as well as all the other comics. i say we should make it but take our time.
also it might be able to work im not sure, just an idea. but what if it was made like Halloween? they did like 4 or 5 movies and now rob zombie made the newest one which focused on when eh was a kid and how he became what he is now. what if that happend for DBZ? halloween started in i think 85 and now its 07. well in 20+ years graphics will change a shit load. so ya, just my own little point of view.

Exactly Josh!!!! thankyou. Time and Patience is all it takes. I don't mean to sound like an upsessed person but, DBZ is my life!!!!!! and Akira Toriyama is my hero. Never in my mind have I ever doubted a real live-action a Dragonball Z movie. I strictly think that they should wait till the "Transformers" hype is over and then bring out "DBZ the movie". It would be a really great idea to have Steven Spielberg and Akira Toriyama team up for this. For one, Steven has directed nothing but thee best movies ever, and second, who knows whats best for a DBZ movie than the genius that made it? The special effects team for Transformer were awsome and I recommend THEM to do the CG for this film. As for the casting, NO WELL-KNOWN AMERICAN HOLLYWOOD ACTORS OR ACTRESSES for this film, like Hugh Jackman or Jessica Alba. Give others the chance to be in the spotlight. They should strictly cast asian actors, Korean, Japanese, Chinese i don't care. Bruce Faulconer should definetly do the musical scoring for DBZ. The fans will love to hear familiar themes from the tv series. Man, if I was rich I would soooooo direct this movie but obviously I can't. I must admit, I am a little nervous about bringing DBZ to the Big-Screen. I'll give it some time, and hopefully this will turn out BIGGER than Transformers. (Don't get me wrong, Transformers Rocked Ass! It's thee best movie I've seen so far). Dang I think I got a little carried away there, but like I said, DBZ is my life.
Thanks for reading and if anyone knows how to get in touch with Akira Toriyama or anyone in connection of making the DBZ movie please e-mail me at dsoaps_300@yahoo.com. Mahalo!

Being a big fan of the anime series i was immediately excited about a live action film. I am worried though that they will let some big shot make the film, who has no interest or has never heard of DBZ at all before. The technology is there to make the effects realistic; by the sounds of it, also has a good budget. Also, expectations will be so high with die hard fans, i hope they dont destroy the legend of the series, and disappoint alot of people. All i can say is it will take an unbelievable effort to pull of this film, because if it is not taken seriously, by whoever makes the film, it will be a humongous flop like 'Street Fighter' or 'Water World' and i just love the series so much, i would hate to see it made a joke of.
