Big Brother 8: Media blocked from interviewing evictees

Big Brother's Amber is poutingNow, this is an interesting turn of events. Did you happen to notice that Amber Siyavus (also listed as Amber Tomcavage elsewhere), evicted from Big Brother 8 last night, was nowhere to be seen on The Early Show?

After all, it's as traditional as blocked feeds each season that the evicted houseguest gets an interview and some personal camera time with Julie Chen.

So, what's happening? Starting with Amber, there will be no more exit interviews of those going into the jury house this season.

According to several sources, the statement released by CBS in regard to this situation is: "We have made jury members... available to the press the past two seasons, always with the proviso that their questions not inform the ejected houseguest of influences outside his or her personal experience in the house. This season, several cast members have made either offensive statements or exhibited controversial behavior. We respect journalists' interest and right to pose questions about these matters, but at the same time believe doing so could provide information that influences the final vote and potential outcome of the 12-week competition."

Okay, it sounds to me like they don't want Amber's anti-Semitic comments to haunt her until after they wash their hands of her. The writer of this EW Article seems to think it's all about Amber and that the rest of the evicted houseguests will suffer for her misdeeds. According to that author, by blocking all of the future evictees from exit interviews, they're avoiding dealing with the Amber situation.

I disagree. Oh, I'm sure they don't want Amber in a shambles while they still have her under their roof, per se. But this season's drama hasn't been all about Amber. There are two more in the house who face the wrath of the general public for other statements or actions.

Eric, the houseguest playing as "America's Player," is shown squeaky clean on the show but has made comments about the father and daughter team of Evel Dick and Daniele being incest candidates. He referred to it more than once and the live feeds watching audience was livid. His foul mouth also offends people when they think he has the responsibility of representing America.

Then there's Evel Dick himself. He poured iced tea on fellow houseguest Jen's head, he cussed the women in the house with the most nasty words known, and (dependent on the viewer) he may or may not have burned Jen with a cigarette. His game strategy for the longest time was demeaning and intimidating others. Again, folks are up in arms about him.

It's a controversial cast and a controversial season. With all the brouhahas going on, I'm not surprised that they blocked the interviews of future jury members starting with Amber. It's a good place to start, if you look at it from their perspective. She's a loose cannon. Dick might be worse if he gets evicted.

I'll miss the interviews with them, but I understand their reasoning. I actually don't think it's because the jury vote may be swayed, though. I think it's more that they just want the season done and over with before the whole thing blows up.

As for me, I never get too shocked over the stupidity or nastiness of folks on reality shows. I always think they had to be slightly off to consider going on a show like that in the first place. Oh, but I'll watch anyway. By watching, I reassure myself that I am indeed a "good person." Heh.
