What would you do if you were Katie Couric and the first anniversary of your stint as anchor of the CBS Evening News was fast approaching? Would you have a big party to celebrate, get drunk, and dance wildly in your underwear in the middle of Fifth Avenue in New York City? Or, would you suit up in some body armor and report from Iraq?
Personally, I'd frolic in my underwear. Katie is forgoing that frivolity and going to Iraq.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday Couric will be anchoring the news from Baghdad, which will be her first time in the war zone.
On Thursday and Friday she'll be reporting from Damascus, Syria. For security purposes CBS wouldn't reveal too many specifics of her plan. They did say that Katie would be spending most of her non-anchor time outside of the city where she would be speaking with soldiers and civilians.
Katie will be the second news anchor to go to Iraq since ABC's Bob Woodruff was nearly killed by a roadside bomb last year (Brian Williams went to Iraq back in March). Some critics see this trip as a chance to kick-start the ratings of the CBS Evening News, which have been stuck in third place for some time now. Who knows, if this all goes well for Katie and the ratings go up she may be dancing up Fifth Avenue after all.

With the way things are going in Iraq, this could be her last trip too.
And who would have thought she would survive a year in America doing the news only to go to the hell that is Bush's Iraq.

Didn't she originally state that she wouldn't go because of her children

I'm not sure if anchoring a news broadcast from Iraq is such a great idea...
After all, what happens if NOTHING HAPPENS? OMG!

With the amount of security that will surely be accompanying her, it is almost certain that nothing specific will happen when she is there to report it. That is so not the point.
