I don't know what type of TV viewer is still interested in beauty pageants. I'm especially confused by people who would tune into this past weekend's Miss Teen USA Pageant. But if the show has more priceless moments like the one in the video after the jump, I might start watching in the future.
It's Miss South Carolina, who tries desperately - and painfully - to answer the question on why so many Americans can't even find the United States on a map. It's one of the great TV moments of the year. Host Mario Lopez must have been thinking about something really sad to keep from laughing.
If you can decipher what she says, please let us know in the comments. I predict she'll have a big future in modeling, or maybe as a model/TV anchor!

I think one problem is that SHE can't find the US on a map.

The viewing area in the midwest was spared that pageant, six hours of weather coverage was given due to violent storms...shows how they view beauty pageants.
That made the cooler talk this morning and will no doubt come back to haunt the ditz for decades.

Poor Mario looks like he is biting his cheek to keep from laughing.
What a sad state of affairs for American education. Yikes!

Miss South Carolina: I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because ah some people out there in our nation dont have maps, and uh I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everwhere like such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here, in the U.S. should help the U.S. err should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for our...

I have to admit, I did actually watch this, but I only tuned in when I noticed my state was in the top ten (go colorado!). The last contestant to answer a question was New Jersey. I personally think her answer was personal attack on South Carolina. NJ was asked a question about a quality that teens today are lacking. Not going with any of the obvious answers, such as responsibility or entitlement issues (in my opinion) she chose to say that teens need to improve on public speaking. Granted her speach rolled right off the tongue, but I have a feeling she came in second for that bitchy little answer.

I'm from SC. I work in a middle school library, where I run a year-long program designed to improve students' geography skills. And I just want to say that girl was NOT one of mine.

Couldn't the question have been:
Miss South Carolina, 1/5th of Americans can not find the United States on a World Map. Please locate it...
(this was brutal to watch)

OK, now before we go off the handle about how dumb Miss South Carolina seems to be, let's remember that she's the representative of her entire state, meaning she's the best the state has to offer. Can you imagine the intellectual capcity of the other South Carolinian girls that she beat?

Elf, dear, do you actually think that Miss S.C. was up there for her, um, intellectual assets?
Somehow I think the judges were looking a little further south.

That was so f***ing pathetic. I don't want her representing America, that's for sure. Quit these pagents and go back to school, sweetheart.

Mario's borderline retarded, so it's doubtful he was even paying attention to her. Wasn't Mario indicted for raping a young girl in Chula Vista or Oceanside, CA about 10 years ago? And now he's working on a teen beauty pageant. Talk about causing your insurance company headaches.

They can't find it because it ain't on the test! With No Child Left Behind the US educational system is all about teaching to the test.

I am a veteran fan of watching beauty contest and is so sad to say that Miss South Carolina response to the question was really an embarrasment. This is the worst situation I ever saw in beauty pageant history. (so far)
Poor girl, wish she could have been more smarter.
Well, this is not the end for you young lady, this will be the start of new beginning. You are young and beautiful and sometimes , it's all that counts.

Assuming that the parents should not be arrested for child abuse and the girl actually wants to compete in these contests, this can not be the first time she has entered one. I would think that with passing through several layers of contests and practice that nerves would be minimized at this stage (not gone since it is televised nationally). Not to mention that nerves would account for the ahs, uhs, and ums, and I will even grant a loss of train of thought but her answer was painful.
