About this time last year, give or take a few days, we reported that veteran actor Leslie Nielsen had signed on to the NBC comedy pilot Lipshitz Saves the World. His role on the show was to be the man who helps the 17-year-old nebbish in the title become the savior that he was destined to be. Unfortunately, the show was not picked up by the network for the fall season. Instead, they picked up another season of Heroes. Cold, heartless bastards!
Because the show wasn't picked up you would think that footage of the pilot would be gone forever. No sir, not in this day and age! Why, you could just go to YouTube -- where unaired pilots go for their final rest -- type in the keyword lipshitz, and you would probably find it fairly easily. We did, and that's why you'll see a preview of the pilot after the jump.
It's tough to say if this show would have been a hit or not if it was picked up. This year's trend seems to be all about the geek, so this may have worked. Then again, the censors may have had seizures with all of the references to Lipshitz and it would have been off the air before the first commercial break. Just watch it and let me know what you think.

That has to be one of the funniest promos I've seen in ages. I can't even believe they were serious about this. Can you imagine that running on NBC??? Maybe Comedy Central, or even FX. Yes, sure, NBC would allow them to do "She's the Shitz." Uh-huh. And, is it just me, or did Leslie Nielsen get really old? Well, maybe he IS really old. In any case, the "Don't call me Shirley" line must have gone over the heads of most of the children who program NBC.

Morley Safer had it right when he said network executives should be nibbled to death by ducks. This looks like it could have been a lot of fun as a lead-in for 'Chuck' and at least a nice addition to the Thursday night line-up as a mid-season replacement.
I'd worry about having Leslie Nielsen around for the long haul though. He's perfect for that type of role, no sense of shame and a do anything for a laugh attitude. But he's 81 years old; man can't live forever...... (I just hope he's around for a while longer anyway.)

I would have watched it...and I would have laughed my ass off. Hey CW, how about picking this up and adding something worth seeing to your lineup?
