The other day we told you about one of the parents of a Kid Nation kid filing a complaint with New Mexico officials, alleging child abuse and unsafe conditions during filming. But just what kind of contract did these parents sign to get their kids on the show? The Smoking Gun has the answer.
As TSG summarizes: "parents of minors in Kid Nation, the controversial new CBS reality show, signed away their rights to sue the network and the show's producers if their child died, was severely injured, or contracted a sexually transmitted disease."
(Sexually transmitted disease?! I guess they were covering every possibility, eh?)
The show focuses on 40 kids who are dropped into a New Mexico town/stage where they have to band together to create a society for themselves. One of the interesting parts of the TSG story is that the original title for the show was The Manhattan Project. I guess that name didn't go over too well. The show premieres September 19.

Rogphi is right, these people shouldn't have children.
And some of the "kids" were 15 years old!!! Who would let 15 year olds together and with 8 year olds?! This whole idea was no thought out at all.

I am wondering what self-respecting Network would put this kind of show on the air? Unbelievable!!! I certainly will not be watching.

The more I think about this the more insane it seems. Are there no child-protection laws in New Mexico? Both the parents and CBS should be charged with child endangerment. Total insanity!!!

Come on guys. Don't rush to judgment. Nobody has seen the show yet. this is like when people freaked out about Survivor dividing the teams along racial lines. It turned out to be a non-issue. This show actually suns interesting.

I still think this show is a brilliant idea... but so many things could go wrong. I think it s a great concept to see what is our kid's idea of society. And comparisons with our current society as a result of wars, politics and thousands of years of evolution got to be fascinating. I am totally convinced after watching many Nickelodeon news specials that kids have good ideas to create a societe with very solid foundations.
Unfortunately, i think this isn't going to happen. People are going to start to freak out when more and more news like this are hitting the web. And there are already ridiculous posts here... judicious choice of word is the key and simple minded people will take offense of almost anything.
Now if i recall CBS stirred controversy a year ago with the race divided Survivor. THIS was too much. Kid's Nation can be clever if it's done right.

Yes, Fabrice, simple-minded people put the welfare of children before network ratings. There is no good reason to put children in a situation that would require the kind of disclaimers that CBS used in the contracts. There is no good reason why responsible parents should have signed these agreements.

Goody, those are legal terms and they probably are used everywhere in reality TV. In that case the choice of word might not have been judicious but kids or adult are covered the same way, as human beings, by the law. I am convinced CBS got hold of an army of pediatricians for that show.

Fabrice, I'm quite sure those legal terms are in most of the contracts signed by all contestants on the so-called reality shows. Why would anyone with a brain sign one of them, and for that matter, why does anyone with a brain watch those shows? I can't believe any pediatrician would come within a mile of this show!

I think it should never be aired. What in the world is a parent hoping for that would cause them to allow this for a child they're supposed to be protecting? Just as in adult reality shows, there will be bullying, tension, conflict, possible physical injuries, and almost certainly emotional injuries.
I say Just Don't Do It!!!

Do you people have kids? If so, and you have sent your child to camp, had them go on an adventure trip, etc. then you have signed something similar. You probably just didn't take the time to read it.
I know when I was a kid that I would have loved this type of adventure. I think it could be fascinating and think that the complaints from parents are just an attempt to extort money. They signed up for this thinking they could get some college money (or whatever) and then thought they had a way to get some more.
By the way, ingesting bleach is not that big of a deal (per poison control) in small quantities and I'm guessing that a small quantity is all they had. Secondly, if you teach your children to cook, they are going to get an occasional burn. These are not unusual or abusive situations. I guarantee that there were adults all over the place observing. Not interfering does not mean they were not there.
I think people have gone way over the top on this one. It sounds more like camp to me. Now, having said that, I wouldn't sent my own children...not because I object to the idea, but because they don't possess the personalities that it would take. They have a much more sheltered life than I had. But I guarantee you these children learned more from this experience than they learn in school for the same time period.

This is the whole reason why the producers created the show, the adults of the nation think that us kids can't be responsable enough to run a city, a town, a country, or the United Nations Of The World. What do adults think we would do, cuase World War 3? Or prevent it. Adults tell me how matchure kids are these days. Why can't everyone just give us a chance? I was so excited to see something like kid nation. I was just amazed and excited. I saw the video online about 53 times. What, I want answers from adults! My parents always tell me "I'M AN ADULT, AND YOUR THE CHILD"

No. When you've decided to sign your child over to a television network and trust a reality show to have your child's best interest at heart, you lose all my respect and sympathy. Morons!

I am disgusted by the concept, by CBS, and by the parents who allowed their children to be in this traumatic type of a situation.
Not only will I not watch this show, I am not going to watch any shows on CBS.
To CBS, the creator's of the show, and the people in charge of giving the go-ahead, you should all be ashamed of yourself.
We are here to protect children, not subject them to situations that will be harmful to them. And, if the parents don't have sense enough to say no, someone in charge at CBS should have.

Perhaps I missed something? I don't understand why everyone is so upset about this. If the parents signed consent, what is the problem? If you find this distasteful then don't watch. Isn't it about time Americans stopped wrapping their children in cotton wool anyway? bloody hell.

Andrew, i agree with you, parents tell us that we have to grow up and be responsible but how can we if were stuck at home with nothing to do. this show will be a great way to show adults that kids are just as resposible at things, heck we may even be more responsible at other things.

Hi I'm a kid, wouldn't you know it, I saw this show for the first time today and I want to get on it. It looks so fun. All you adults complain, and no offense but SUCK IT UP. This is the stuff kids dream about getting to run there own town there own way. If you don't like it don't watch it and anytime a kid wants to go home they can remember. People normally think these things through a little before they put it on air and personally I'm 14 and turn 15 in a few months and I wish they would have come out with this sooner. I'm a girlscout learning to be a counsaler at a wonderful camp and I deal with kids of all ages 7-16. Ok those 15 year old boys are dumb (thats my oppinion) but they grow up. And if it'll get a giggle out of ya I'll kick there butts if they ever acted stupid around me.
You adults never seem to take into consideration what we kids think give us a chance at it first. Please.
