Here's an interesting casting choice: Janeane Garofalo is joining 24. According to TV Guide, she'll be a regular cast member on the next season. Her character is a government agent who will be investigating Jack Bauer and his CTU co-workers. I can imagine her playing someone Jack (and the rest of the audience) really hates. This is Garofalo's first return to mainstream television since she her role as Louise Thornton on The West Wing in 2004-2005. She also starred in a dramatic pilot for CBS called Law Dogs, but it has not been picked up by the network.
So, 24 fans, does the news about Janeane get you more excited for the next season? Or, would you rather have a decent plot line this time around rather than celebrity casting?

I was just watching her on Seinfeld last night along with some deleted scenes and bloopers from her appearance - coincidence or conspiracy?

This is, I think, an interesting choice. Both for feisty liberal Garofalo and for the people behind 24. Hopefully, she won't be another great actress wasted in a pathetic and stereotypical role like Regina King in Season 6. Granted, if she's investigating Jack then the character will be be on the losing end of the storyline, but that's fine as long as they don't turn her into some character we hate to love instead of love to hate.

Say it isn't so!! "24" will be ruined for me. She will be an annoying distraction, I will see her as the foaming at the mouth, bitter political activist. Far from just expressing an opinion, she's a hatefilled person. Thank goodness Air America didn't work out for her, the public was sick of her ugliness.

She was tolerable on the West Wing because the show was particularly well written . Given last season exercise in ridiculousness and recycled plot lines, I don't think Ill be able to stand her. Perhaps if we are lucky she will be eaten by a cougar

So far, I'm liking the casting for this season much more than last. Janeane Garafalo and Cherry Jones are great character actresses and they will add a lot of charisma. And I hope the rumor that Gary Oldman is considering joing up comes true. The major problem with last year was that most of the new actors they brought on were unsuitable for their roles. Outside of Powers Boothe, Peter MacNichol, and Alexander Siddig, no one really "clicked".

She isn't that bad of an actress. In fact I remember seeing a movie with her and Uma Thurman where she was quite good. Who cares about her political affiliations on a TV show its more important whether you can act or not.

Wasn't the West Wing cancelled shortly after she was brought on?
On 24, Jack's suspicions will be aroused after her ACLU membership card accidentally falls out of her hemp purse. Shortly thereafter, she'll be revealed as a doubleagent and shipped off to a special prison in Egypt.

I'm probably not going to watch it this time around. This casting decision only helps me stay away.

She was brilliant as the sardonic FBI agent in "Clay Pigeons" ("Barney? Could you not poke the body with a stick, please?"). She can certainly play serious, but "24" might be improved with a little slice of black humor from someone other than Chloe.

I can't judge based on hearing that she's going to be on the show. I love 24 and will wait impatiently to see what she brings to the story. Hopefully something worthy.

Ditto for me!
Now they are relying on gimicks rather than substance.
Garofalo is the proverbial straw.
There may not be much agreement here, but I think the show is a liberal show dressed in conservative clothes.

I think that everyone is over reacting about this news. 24 has never been about the "guest stars" but it has always had stars in each and every season. Many of them play small roles, some of them are killed and others we just never see again. Either way, they are merely players in the overall show drama. 24 is a show about Jack Bauer and that is it. There isn't any room for additional stars that Jack would have to share the spotlight with. I mean, c'mon! We've already seen Peter Weller and Dennis Hopper. The stars appear every season but they successfully cast everyone in roles that allow them to fade seamlessly into the overall story line. Janeane will be a great addition to this show simply because she's a talented actress. While she is a slightly polarizing political figure, it won't matter at all once the cameras start rolling.
I'm ready for my closeup Mr. De Mille...

You guys are hilarious. "Oh noes liberal Garofalo's invading my conservative TV show!!!!1!1!!111111"
It's a TV show. It's supposed to be entertaining. It's not supposed to make any sort of political statement or reinforce any ideas about the state of our world today. It's supposed to be escapist entertainment. And to me, Garofalo is very entertaining as an actress. It makes me confident they'll do better this season than last.

From #17 above
That statement should be true, but it is not in this instance. Albeit subtle, they are, indeed, trying to make a statement - a liberal one. Don't believe that rhetoric from the producer! More and more, in recent years, every conservative character on the show was cast in a, if not in an evil role, then at least, in an unreasonable light.
They could have picked from thousands of (starving) actresses, but they had to get one of the rabid ones.
That's a gimmick, and a means to further denigrate conservative ideals.
Everyone I know stated their displeasure with the "24" trend, and will not have the interest that, at one time, dominated their Monday nights.
I will definitely not waste time on this circus.

Liberal PC. Next we'll have Jane Fonda as Secretary of State, Michael Moore as Secretary of Defence....and...Ted Kennedy as...Presidential Limo Driver. Susan Sarandon as U.N. Ambasador...and to be completely PC, we can have George Clooney as the secret lover of the First Husband.
