Good news for owners of HD DVD systems. Not so good news for owners of Blue Ray DVD systems.
The rumored release of Battlestar Galactica - Season 1 finally has a date to it: December 4th. The 6-DVD set will be priced at about $100. The discs will be single-sided "HD-30's" with widescreen video, both Dolby HD Surround and Digital Plus 5.1, and subtitles in both English and French (how do you translate 'frak' into French? Fraque?). The set will have all of the original DVD extras as well as those specific to the HD release. You can find the detailed breakdown of features by clicking on this link.
Also being released on December 4th will be the unrated director's cut of the BSG movie Razor, which focuses on Admiral Cain and the Battlestar Pegasus. This will be a standard DVD which features widescreen video, Dolby Digital sound, and English subtitles. The cost will be a mere $27.00.

Expect it for $70 on Amazon. Since Heroes' MSRP is $100 and Amazon has it for $70 as well, I wouldn't worry about the MSRP of BSG.

I'll see how much it is at Best Buy. I love BSG (and Heroes) for that matter, but I don't know if it's worth paying an extra 30-40 bucks for the HD-DVDs.

$27 for Razor seems a bit too much. Like they're asking me to turn around and bend over too much. Good thing there's half.com
As for the HD-DVDs. I was holding off on buying the seasons because I wanted HD versions but then I broke about a month ago and I don't regret it. I'm glad I did given the $100 price tag. With $100 I can buy 4 seasons of BSG (again, thank you half.com).
Its probably best (at least for those of us who don't have high-def players yet) to not invest in this, and wait until a format wins.

Neither side will win the format war if everyone simply says "I'll just wait until a side wins." That will only prolong it, since no one will be willing to commit and it'll just be a stalemate.

The $100 MSRP only seems high because we are used to lower DVD prices. If you look at where most HD price points, this is actually not that out of line for a six disc set. Plus, you have to take into account the MSRP of the traditional DVD set for BSG Season One. This five disc set (four with episodes and one with special features) is already high with a $60 price tag before discounting. With the show's high production values and relatively slim target audience, I really don't think it is too much of a stretch that it was priced this high as an HD set.
HBO pretty much set the bar on providing premium content on cable and then look how much each of their DVD sets lists at. I dare you to find one that lists for less than $90. You either pay for the superior content or you simply don't own any of them. The BSG sets are the same way and in my opinion, they are worth every penny I've spent so far.

Oh, and I think this release is a strategic move on Universal's part. With both BSG and Heroes coming out on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray, we finally get two extremely strong reasons to invest in HD-DVD instead of BD. These are both HUGE fanboy titles and should help spur a noticeable spike in both player and DVD sales this fall. Player prices are at an all time low and Toshiba is getting ready to release their NEXT gen players just in time for Christmas. There has never been a better reason to invest in High Def but Universal just gave Toshiba a nicely gift wrapped present on a silver platter...
