Well, that didn't last long: the Sci-Fi Channel has canceled Painkiller Jane.
The show about a DEA agent with special powers who tracks down others with special powers will finish its first and only season on September 21 (it's still strange to me that a show's season can end in September). That means that the show will have completed 22 episodes total. I predict that fans will be able to buy the show in a "Complete Series" DVD set late this year or early next year.
The show never really had that "buzz" that the Stargate shows and Doctor Who or even Flash Gordon (biggest debut of the year for the network) had, so it's really no surprise that it's not going to see a second season. Sci-Fi also cancelled The Dresden Files a couple of weeks ago.

too bad. there wasn't much else on Fridays to see, and I've enjoyed every episode except for the annoying flashback-filler-episode a few weeks back.

Why? That just makes you as rigid in your thinking as the network executives of America. What possible reason is there that a show's season has to start in the fall? In no other country in the world do 90% of shows start and finish their season at the same time.
I think I should be a consultant to the US networks. I've predicted so many of the flops and hits of the last couple of years. Even though the TV film Painkiller Jane from 2005 (or was it 2003) was brilliant, only 30 minutes into the pilot of this new version I knew it would flop. I watched to the end of the first episode and knew it had no future. Similarly I knew Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip didn't have it. Even though I personally liked Jericho, I didn't see it getting renewed. On the positive side, it only took the pilot to know Heroes and Eureka would be smash hits.
Network execs, send me your pilots and I'll let you know if they've got a future. I've only had one memorable failure and that was "Lost". That had enough story line for about 6 episodes I thought. I personally gave up on it at about episode 8 of the first season.

I watched Painkiller Jane every time, but it just wasn't a good show. There have been many great shows in the past that have been cancelled. I never read the comic, so maybe I just didn't get everything I should have, but in the pilot it seemed that the building Jane 'fell' out of was somewhat important to the whole story line, but it never got mentioned again. So the only real 'story' is a bunch of people hunting neuro's, there was no bigger picture (or we just didn't get to see it during the first season). And it became very predictable, very soon.
So I'm just going to continue loving Dr. Who, Stargate and Flash Gordon's pilot has fascinated me as well (alltho it kinda reminds me of the tv-show Sliders).
Just my 8 cents.

So that is what, 2 new shows that didn't make it past their first season?
I imagine Flash Gordon will be next.
When will SciFi learn?

I watched the pilot but never had time to watch subsequent episodes. But, I liked that first episode. It certainly beat the crap out of that awful Flash Gordon pilot.

When will Sci-fi Learn to give more episodes to their better rated, more well known shows, Stargate, Eureka and BSG, and less episodes to new shows. There was no need for Flash Gordon or Painkiller Jane to have 22 episode first seasons. It was a waste of Sci-fi's time and money.
That said i think within 2 years Sci-fi will not have any new shows at all, and if they do none of them will get the ratings to make it to a second season. Sci-fi Channel is dead, they just haven't realized it yet.

I am glad they canceled this crap. Seriously, if they canceled a decent show like Dresden, but gave this show even more episodes, I was going to boycott Sci-Fi, and write them a sternly worded letter!... probably throw in something like bringing back Invisible Man and releaseing the first 2 seasons on DVD also!

When will Sci-Fi realize they aren't a big network and don't need ratings to make programming decisions.

Good. Both shows were horrificly bad. As a matter of fact, so is Flash Gordon. Bring back BSG already!

The show wasn't great, but it was something new to watch during the summer. At least SciFi gave us a full season then canceled. Unlike some other network that gives you 3 episodes then cancel it (Drive).

I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but was Dresden officially cancelled by Sci-Fi?
Was there a confirmation somewhere? Thanks.

Adios, Painkiller Jane.
I watched the first three episodes, just to see if this show had a prayer of a chance to improve.
I started to run out of Excedrin due to the headaches that Jane induced.
I'll watch the next two episodes of Flash Gordon, to see if that series improves.
But I'm not holding my breath.

Painkiller Jane was merely OK, but I absolutely agree that it was insane that they gave it a 22 episode first season, and for that reason alone I wanted to to tank. I really think no show should get more than 13 episodes its first season, but every episode that is shot should be aired. Dresden Files got much better through the course of the season, and it is such a shame that it got canned.

I applaud Scifi Channel for letting the series run their course instead of axing them during the first few episodes *cough*Drive*cough* like other networks *cough*FOX*cough*.

I watched all the Painkiller Jane's, and Actually liked them.
Maybe, I the only one who actually like them in the usa...LOl
It was the only show I watched on a regular biases.
I had never heard of the orginial comic book series. So What? I thought that the whole idea was one of the few orginial ideas I've seen in a long time. In case you haven't noticed they're going back and remaking almost every old movie series that they can find.
I take exception to the way everyone picks on every show anyone put out there. I'd like to see you guys go out and try to come up with orginail material and try to make it into a series. It cost mega bucks to make one of theses shows and talking the execs into backing a project isn't easy. So they go back and remake old material.
I used to watch a show on history channel and set PKJ to record on tghe repeat overnight and watch it lateer in the week off the DVR.
Well I guess I've said my piece.
