TV Squad's Paul Goebel reported earlier this month that a gay couple would be moving on Wisteria Lane this upcoming season of Desperate Housewives. Then, rumors started to fly around saying that David Beckham and Robbie Williams were contenders for the roles. After weeks of speculation, the names of the two actors playing the gay couple are finally revealed.TV Guide confirms that actors Tuc Watkins and Kevin Rahm where cast in the roles. Watkins, who is known for his work on One Life To Live, will play Bob, described by TV Guide as "a country mouse who leaves the big city for greener (and quieter) pastures." This is one of the biggest shows on TV and they're just now introducing gay characters this many seasons in. It would be nice if there was some more racial diversity as well. It's amazing to see how whitewashed prime time TV remains even in 2007.

justelise: they do have gay characters on the show, but it's the first official adult couple they are introducing. Andrew Van de Kamp is gay, so was his teen friend. And Vern, Gaby's friend, is surely gay too.

Ridiculous comment by justelise. More racial diversity? They live in a predominantly white town. They had the Applewhites. Not every primetime show has to feature every race. Gaby and Carlos aren't white.

They could've solved the diversity race/orientation issue in one shot if they would've cast Isaiah Washington as one of the gay neighbors! The ultimate in blissful irony and quite probably some amusing punishment for him on the Grey's Anatomy issue. C'mon people, you know that's some funny stuff!

I never understood comments like justelise's. Sure, there's isn't a ton of diversity (ignoring Gaby/Carlos), but what would you rather have? Token characters written badly because the writers don't know how to treat them? Or characters that ring true, and fit the locale?
They say that you write what you know. Will and Grace was a massive hit because the characters were true to the writers. Friends was a massive hit because the characters were part of the writing staff to a large degree. Desperate Housewives has been a hit because the characters, while extreme, are clearly something the writers can relate to. Why would you ruin that by forcing color into the equation?
I'm not saying I'm against diversity. I'm saying that it does a major disservice if it's added for it's own sake and not because the writers know how to write for the new characters.
