One of my guilty pleasures this summer has been catching ABC Family's Greek on Monday nights. It has its flaws for sure (like last night's episode, which was downright silly), but it's laid-back fun. However, one thing that I can't get over is how easy these college kids, most who are not even in their Senior year yet, are able to so easily enter a bar and drink up to the point of total drunkenness.
Let's put aside the inaccuracies of how the Greek system is portrayed in this show. Now, don't get me wrong; I've had my fair share of bar crawling and tossing around fake IDs in my college days, so I'm not trying to be too preachy here. Maybe my school or state has stricter rules for underage drinking and carding, but the way it's so easy for these kids to enter the local bar, Dobler's, and get plastered is hard to swallow.
This is no stinky, peanut shell covered floor, no doors on the toilet stalls dive bar we're talking about. Dobler's, at least as it is portrayed on the show, is a nice looking place. Have they even shown the kids getting carded or wearing telltale "I'm at least 21" bracelets given at the door?
Then there's the episode with the intramural floor hockey where one of the main characters, Cappie, whips out a cooler of cocktails at the team bench and starts to drink up without hiding at all. It's sorta reminiscent of Animal House antics or some of the college movies of the '80s, but it feels oddly placed in this show.
On top of my issues of how unbelievably easy it is for these kids to drink, this show is on ABC Family. When the hell did "family" mean condoning underage boozing was a good idea? I mean, come on, the main title screen for the show is a red keg cup! Drinking, being drunk, passed out, hungover and pissing in closets is a main feature of this show. Wouldn't it be better placed on HBO or Showtime, or even FX, than ABC Family?
There is a story behind the naming of ABC Family that sheds some light on the situation. From Wikipedia:
"The next major plan was to reposition the channel to market it to college students, young women, or to a more hip audience under the name XYZ, a reverse reference to ABC. Disney soon found that the channel could never be renamed as such. The sale from CBN contained a stipulation from Robertson that the channel contain the word "Family" in the name forever, no matter who owns the network. To create XYZ, the Family Channel would have had to cease to exist - terminating all existing cable TV contracts - and XYZ would have to be created as a new network. Cable companies would not be obligated to put XYZ in the spot vacated by the Family Channel. ABC scrapped the idea after discovering this clause."
So maybe it's not really their fault. But whose fault is it for putting drunk kids on what's being labeled as a family network? If you watch other shows on ABC Family, it's clear that they are moving in the XYZ direction. Kyle XY covers more mature oriented material as each season progresses, for example. Honestly I think the "Family" in ABC Family is what hurts them more than helps, as I think the crowds they're targeting are turned off by that misleading name!
So, back to the question at hand. Are there really colleges out there, colleges in the United States, where nicely decked out, nearby bars let the kids order drinks as easily as a soda?

I would have to say there are colleges with bars nearby that will allow underage drinkers. I know since my 8th grade year, most of the "cool" kids would go to some party and get wasted. I am now twenty as of today and can get alcohol even easier now, it's really sad that people are letting kids drink when they are younger than 18 much less 21. I think ABC Family should stick to it's roots and show stuff for FAMILIES. Showing stuff like Slacker Cats is okay I thought the debut was alright, no Family Guy or anything. There are still a lot of normal families and normal young people out there. It seems like they are making it okay for youngsters to go out and drink instead of making stuff for families. ABC should just make an "XYZ" channel and try to compete with [adult swim] at night or something.

First, the show airs at 9, 8 Central. That qualifies as squarely prime-time, where parents should be watching, or at least monitoring, their children's viewing habits. Many other shows on other stations get away with crass language and violent situations at the same time, so in comparison, the activities on Greek are tame. Hardly what you would qualify as 'Family' in the terms of Disney standards, but definitely not anything over which to ring up the FCC.
Second, yes, it is that easy to get into bars, to get drinks, however odd it may seem. I almost quit going to bars by the time I turned 21, because I was tired of the scene! No, there is no show of their fake ID's, or huge stamps on hands showing age requirements, but that would detract from the theme of the show. Dobbler's is a classic "college" bar - and as it caters to the college crowd, my guess would be that it's a little more lax than most. I am by no means condoning the actions of any bar that knowingly serves underage patrons - I am simply saying that it does indeed happen. College students provide huge amounts of revenue for local bars, and unless sanctions are put into place by local authorities, they will continue to take the money provided by these willing young people.
Third, much of the drinking that occurs, i.e. the red keg cup, occurs at private parties where the alcohol is provided by those that are of or above legal age. That is the key to the college drinking system, like it or not. It is possibly the most accurate portrayal of Greek life in this silly, fun show.

I'm in college at UCF in Orlando, Fla. A school with 47,000 students and it is that easy to get a drink. Every girl I know goes out to the bars around school every weekend, and they always post pictures on Facebook/Myspace with drinks in their hands. I don't know how it works but I guess it's giving drinks to underage girls is what brings in the older male customers...

i think the point is that parents shouldn't have to monitor their children's watching habits on a channel labeled "family." (at least, not as closely.) i'm all for shows like "Greek" and "Kyle XY," but not on a channel that is labeled "family." it's totally misleading and while i enjoy shows that are on the edge, i also think it would be great if we had some quality family programming out there. if it's that important to them to have this kind of programming, put it on the regular ABC or take a risk and put some money into the XYZ network. they're ABC for crying out loud... it's not like they can't get things done if they really want to. they have the reputation that if they were to build a brand new network, people would give it a chance. if UPN and the WB (and now the CW) can get airtime and cable pickup, then ABC certainly can.

Have you ever seen most of ABC Family's shows? None of them are really for families, they are for teens. They had to keep the "Family" in their name for legal issues. It's also why their moto is "A new type of family".
And why doesn't anyone here review the show? it's a really good show with loveable charaters.

haha, the second you get on a college campus access to alcohol is not an issue at all. You aren't high school kids asking strangers to go in and pick you up some beer at the 7/11 anymore. Just go to any house or fraternity party (easiest method), borrow a older friends ID or take their old expired ID and hit up the bar. Hell just pass back the same ID once some is already in the bar. It's as much alcohol as you can handle or more.
I wasn't an alcoholic, I was a college student

As mentioned ABC is stuck with the "Family" name as they are stuck with showing the 700 Club on the network.
Please note that there new tag line is "A New Kind" of family. My bet is that they are hoping the folks at the 700 Club will decide that they no longer want to be associated with the network and let ABC out of their end of the contract.

Hell I had trouble getting a drink in Dublin, Ireland. And I was the legal drinking age there. Although my friend, 17 just showed that he had an ID and they gave him a drink. Guess the bartender had trouble with American IDs. In America I'm not the legal age though and I just go to a party and get my booze there in the keg supplied. So I know for a fact its hard as hell to get a drink, unless its at a friends house.

I can't believe you're just noticing this. The channel has been decidedly non-family friendly for a while now. to wit:
a few months ago I was at a bachelor party... while waiting for the evening's real entertainment to arrive, I fipped on the tube to see "Dukes of hazzard: the beginning", which for those out there that haven't seen it, is basically soft-core porn. I was laughing until the first commercial break, which proudly identified the station as ABC family, at which point we laughed even louder.
My buddy with kids blocked it on his cable the next day.

Anyone ever look at the ABC Family overnight schedule? That's where they shove the "700 Club", surrounded by about 3 hours of infomercials on both sides, to do everything possible to make sure absolutely no one sees it. I think they got a lousy deal for the channel, and are pushing against the contract's restrictions as much as possible. (As far as their shows go, I like "Kyle XY", and the way it's slowly progressing from "Afterschool Special" quality to something far more interesting...I started watching it just for the Matt Dallas eye candy, but I actually like the show now.)

Scott, Matt Dallas is the same reason I started watching Kyle XY too! I went "I like Nowhere Man, and I like this Kyle guy, I'll watch". :)

As a college senior who has been frequenting bars for a few years (I am 21 now, do the math) there are tons of ways to get into bars on campus. Some places are known for being hard on fake IDs, but others barely care. My favorite way to get in was by knowing the right people. I had friends who were friends with bouncers, and then I became friends with bouncers. I'm sure for people in frats at some schools it works just like that, you say your a Kappa Tau and you don't get carded. My personal favorite way to get in was the back door. Maybe they'll do an ep where the bar cracks down at the front door and all the pledges have to find another way in.

This is a bit off-topic, but anyone know if Greek will be shown on ABC (Friday nights)? I don't have cable. They can't get me hooked on the show and then pull it! (I know that it's an ABC Family show, first and foremost, but still!).

There's nothing stranger and funnier than last night's schedule for ABC Family...you had the premiere of "Slacker Cats", a cartoon which had plots about a paranoid cat crawling inside a dead cat corpse, allusions to necrophelia, and credit card fraud, leading into "The 700 Club". And after that? A repeat of that night's "Greek".
Oh, how I'd love to watch Pat Robertson read that schedule or turn to the channel last night.

1) yes it is that easy to get drinks at a bar...
I am CURRENTLY in college and I will say that I have going to bars since I was 18 years old (my freshmen year)...I am going to turn 21 in October and I NEVER have any problem getting drinks or getting in.
Most places charge cover so they do not care if you look like the person that's on ur id card...but really as long as you pay to get in the door.
As far as getting the alcohol...there are a couple of ways to get around being underage:
if they are stamping hands just have someone transfer their stamp or once it gets busy just go up to the bar because the bartender wont check then.
The show is all in good fun....its a TV SHOW for god's sakes...don't take it to seriously...and for the people who are in sororities and fraternities worried about their image...don't be. Either people are going to join or not...and if they don't join it won't be because they watched Greek.
I think I read somewhere taht ABC family is contracted to show the 700 club or something...
people need to stop debating the whole drinking on the tv show because it's entertainment and guess what...KIDS DO IT!
