Earlier this summer, I have to admit that I was a little giddy about a new reality series on VH1 called My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding. To me, it sounded like an adult version of MTV's My Super Sweet 16, which is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. I've concluded that the spoiled brat teen-agers on MTV are much more creative than the riches on VH1.Fab Wedding is only about the cost of a wedding and not about the over-the-top nature of the wedding itself. The camera crews travel to various venues with the bride and groom, where we watch them order a $7,000 cake and pick out $70,000 worth of diamonds. The problem is that we don't really get a good look at the final product. What about the $200,000 in flowers? Once the show gets to the end, the edits are so quick that we don't actually get to see what kind of a wedding is made for $1.6 million.
It's as if the adults on Fab Wedding are making decisions about their wedding based on how much things cost (the more, the better), whereas the kids on My Super Sweet 16 are actually trying to outdo each other with outlandish party gimmicks and special guests. I much prefer the teen-agers.

Good to know I'm not missing much by not having VH1. My secret guilty pleasure is reality wedding shows of all kinds. I saw the previews for this one and wasn't impressed by the couples but thought the actual episodes might be worthwhile - guess not. My favorite reality wedding show has to be "engaged and underage" - proof that truth (to the extent that anything on TV is "truth") is really stranger than fiction.

I saw the first one... sort of by accident. At least, I think it was the first one. I thought it was disgusting -- perfect reality-show fodder.

I agree, the show is a (big, fat, fabulous) disappointment. The funny thing is that I thought - okay so all of this 'look at me buying stuff' and planning was going to lead to the big reveal in the next episode - wrong! The problem with the show is that it does not have purpose, story, or conclusion.
