Many of you out there were surprised when Dr. Carson Beckett met his untimely demise on the "Sunday" episode of Stargate: Atlantis last season. That surprise turned into anger when the death of his character wasn't truly mourned in subsequent episodes. Perhaps the producers of the show heard your complaints because Dr. Beckett will be returning to the show next season.
The SciFi Channel is reporting that Paul McGillion will be reprising his role of Dr. Beckett for a two-episode arc in the show's fourth season, which will begin on September 28th.
The details of the episode are being kept under wraps, but McGillion says that fans will be satisfied with his role in the story. According to the actor they'll be seeing a lot of Beckett in the two episodes.
As to more appearances of the dearly departed doctor on Atlantis, McGillion says that he would be more than happy to appear on a fairly permanent basis, but he doesn't really know what the producers have in store for his character. Hey, its science fiction, so anything can happen.

Technically, this is what went down as to his return (taken from Joe Malozzi's blog)
-Producers decided to kill Carson but leave door open for him to come back
-No official plans were made to actually bring him back
-The whole "save carson" campaign started and Malozzi told them that if they could get some press coverage, he would bring back Carson
-The campaign arranged a "protest" outside of Bridge Studios which got some actual press
-Malozzi stood up to his end of the bargin and wrote back in Beckett
If he comes back for more in the future I guess all hinges on how they bring him back. I miss the character greatly and would love to see him on but I accepted his characters death and felt it was a greater part of the whole story. Plus, I met Paul in a bar a few years ago and he was the nicest guy ever.

I hardly consider coming back for 2 episodes a comeback its just a novelty. Plus they didnt give any spoilers its common knowledge that carson will be back for those two episodes unless you live under a rock.

From whats been said elsewhere, the 2-episode stint is supposed to leave the door open for a fulltime return in the following season.

Paul McGillion deserves to be back on Stargate Atlantis. A supremely talented actor who brought so much to SGA in his role as Dr Carson Beckett - his return has made many, many fans happy. Two episodes is great - but I don't think justice will have been done until he is back for good in season 5. His death should never have happened in my opinion. What a waste of a truly amazing character.

This is fantastic news!
I was not going to bother with Stargate this year but now I think I might just tune in, at least for two episodes!
I don't know what the producers and writers were thinking, and frankly I don't want to know, I just hope they realise the damage they have done and take steps to fix this

Rainbow Sun Franks was back for more episodes than this even without any campaign.
This is just meh. They didn't achieve anything with their protest.

its not that he is or was my favorite caracter in the series but after he died in (Sunday) i stoped watching Sga.
i thought if this is what they do to the series and this is how they do it i better stop watching now befor they trow all of the caracters away like trash.
they kind of did the same to (Ford) wich was a shame becouse that guy was a talented person aswell.
now i heared people talking about Beckett returning so i guess i just start watching again :)

Just thought that you might like to know the over at David Hewlett's (Dr. McKay) Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/dhewlett) he just posted, "We've got an old friend on set this week! Won't you be Mchappy ;-)"
He doesn't post too often, but it is cool to see these little snippets in to the life of one of the actors on one of my favorite shows.

In all fairness, Ford was taken off the show because the actor could not handle being on a regular show. He could not handle the stress and exhaustion.

It is good that Paul is back as Carson Beckett - even for only two episodes.
We only hope that he will be returned to his rightful place in series 5.
It is easy to criticize our campaign to have the character reinstated in the series. But it is something we believe in and is not detrimental to anything else that happens in Stargate Atlantis. We are peaceful campaigners with a sense of humour and a great respect for all the people who help to bring this programme to our screens.
