It looks like Amber Tomcavage, the infamous crying gal on Big Brother 8 may have some real reasons to shed tears once she leaves the house.Anti-Semitic comments she made on the live feeds have now hit all of the major news outlets including a televised segment on CNN.
TMZ and FOX are both running stories about the incident. Actually, it was more than one incident. However, I saw the worst one the other night myself as I watched the feeds.
I don't know if this qualifies as show spoilers, but you've been warned ... read on at your own risk!
In the incident I saw, Amber was talking about how nasty New York is. She claimed it was "all selfish Jews who only care about money." She went on to say that she can tell by last names and noses. She tends to automatically know if someone's Jewish and dislike them. According to her, her mother and sister feel the same way.
Uh-oh.
In the TMZ article I linked, there's a comment from Abraham Foxman, the national Director of the Anti-Defamation League, in which he takes great offense. He not only is offended by Amber's statements in particular, but of similar incidents across the realm of the reality television genre.
I understand his concern, but I hope that there's more folks out there like me. When I hear someone on a reality show say something rude, ignorant, hateful or bigoted, it reminds me that there are still people like that out in the world -- folks who judge on religion, color, race, disabilities, and more. It reminds me that we all must be treat other people with respect and an open mind. It reminds me that reality show contestants aren't always the brightest bananas in the bunch. I will never be a reality television "star" but I'll always have a fantastic diverse group of friends and enjoy the differences in the human race.

I'm still having trouble people are this dumb, and this isn't a publicity stunt.
PS. I like how you mention TMZ and Fox in the same sentence. They share the same amount of credibility.

I haven't liked Amber since day 1. She is irritating and ignorant. She even asked Dustin - her bff in the house if he was jewish. WTF? He told her his mother is, then she explained how she felt about jews @@. He then back pedaled and said she wasn't a "practicing one". Why would she even go there with him??? This chick needs to be sent packing....and soon. I will take Kail over her and I think Kail is equally as ignorant - statements about lifestyle "choices" etc.
Thanks for your articles and commitment to BB, Jackie. It so wouldn't be the same without you!

Amen. Rather than promoting racism and bigotry, this just exposes how ridiculous it really is. If anyone thinks that someone's going to look at Amber and want to emulate her on any level, they're really out there.

I HEART you Jackie! :-)
Let's feel sorry for Amber in her ignorance. Maybe she'll learn a little tolerance through this.
If Dustin's mother is Jewish, then by Jewish tradition he is Jewish. I looked it up recently because someone asked me about this. It's been this way for centuries-- the faith is passed down on the mother's side.

I wonder if Big Brother will warn Amber about making such remarks in the future.

One of the things that really bothers me is that Kail isn't being given the same kind of treatment for the blatantly homophobic comments she has made too. I guess the Jews can afford better lawyers....
But seriously, it is always much more acceptable to make nasty comments about anyone who is gay and it happens every single time on BB without fail.

Here here Jackie, this was a great post. I saw the story on TMZ and couldn't believe there were people like that still around but then I remember there are people like that in my town still too. . .
I wonder if this will blow up like the incident on Celebrity BB in the UK where a contestant made repeated slurrs against another contestant because she was Indian.
And as one of the others commented BB/CBS should take a similar hard line on anyone making gay slurs as they would ethnic slurs.

I for one am not convinced Amber is an anti-semite.
Could she be pegging Jameka - a black, conservative Christian - as someone who would at least be 'receptive' to anti-jewish sentiments in order to remind her to make sure to vote Eric out that week? In the context of the game, I think that's very plausible.

If Joker's updates are correct and the producers are influencing Houseguests on who to evict isn't the game fixed and aren't they preventing other players from possibly winning? If they are deciding who will win, what is the fun for us the viewing public?
Are they being anti-Christian by having Kail voted out?

Enjoyed your writing as usual, Jackie. Amber always did strike me as emotionally unstable and uneducated. Her attitude and comments about race and religion are pathetic. Prejudice and bigotry are learned attitudes so I'm not surprised that her mother and sister have the same ignorant attitudes.
Let us not forget what makes our America so great...tolerance and freedom to worship and be who you are. That being said, there are those who will continue their ignorance. JMHO

How appropriate that Eric's first comment comes on a post regarding those who are "ignorant, hateful or bigoted".

You GUYS should know if you really want to say something about AMBERS one freaking comment, why dont you all say something about HOW Jessica made comments about blacks in the backyard while a Kanye West song was playing, I know of 3 different events where she has said something about blacks whether the "coloured" word-not many people besides those who are heavily unexposed use that word or those who feel a little better than the rest of us, this season is really screwed up to begin with, the whole America's player thing--Eric is a little creepy, well maybe alot, they should have gotten a female that could have played it off a little better-ya know maybe Jen because she is kind of faking the whole-mememe-thing...
And It's a season of deranged, medicated, delusioned and obsessed people that it seems were dug up from the trenches of hell..other seasons were good, this season has turned to plain disturbing after Nick left..was good before that-with Joe..but once Dustin and Eric became the "MEN" of the house, things changed.. Dick unfortunately, Im forced to root for him, because as much as Id love to hate him, at least he stands his ground...But CITE JESSICA IF YOU ARE ALSO GOING TO CITE AMBER...since we are being so American and all..

While Amber's ignorant comments are indefensible, isn't their a certain personal obligation to comport ourselves with a certain amount of class and self respect. As an Irishman I don;t want people making stereotypical comments about me like "typical Irish look how drunk he is" or "that Irishman is full of Blarney". Both Dustin and Eric know what the stereotypical reactions to Gays and Jewish people are yet they both seem to be playing into the ignorance almost as if they think it will help them.
At least with Eric there is the excuse that he was chosen as "America's Player". For Dustin there is no excuse he obviously holds his own success in the show much closer than he holds Gay rights or the perception of Gays by others. Even in his good bye comment to Kail he referred to her as bitch. Wow what a gentleman.
Jameka on the other hand as a black woman and also as a strong Christian has behaved in a manner that can only be classified as dignified and respectful. She may not be playing the best game in the house but she is someone to be respected and admired. Of all of the people in that house this year she is the only one I would care to meet in real life.
Perhaps we need to look at BB as being mostly responsible for people with biased and prejudiced viewpoints being in the house to begin with. They do all of the pschological testing and must know about these behaviors before the houseguests are chosen.

I think I messed this up the first time - let's try that again...
Bill,
"Jameka...as a strong Christian has behaved in a manner that can only be classified as dignified and respectful."
Are you kidding me? She plays the same game as everyone else. The difference is, she tries to hide behind the cross and claim some sort of ridiculous moral high ground. If she were such a shining example of Christianity, would she be acting like the following? (caution: strong language)

I think maybe you should just turn the other cheeka, Jameka. No need to insult Dick's mom. Rise above it if you're so much holier than the others.
