If you're a fan of the channels that make up the Discovery Communications kingdom then you have probably seen Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar and their 16 children in one of their specials. Maybe it was Raising 16 Children, where we were introduced to the Duggar clan, or On the Road With 16 Children, which focused on their trip to Disneyland. Or, perhaps, you may have caught Creating an Independent Country With 16 Children, which was shown only once and removed from the air by the government (and, if you watched that special, they would like to have a word with you. Something about conspiracy).
Well, get ready for another slew of specials because Michelle, Jim Bob, and all of their J-named children have welcomed a new baby girl into the brood. Jennifer Danielle Duggar was born on August 2nd at 10:01 in the morning. She weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 21 inches long. Jennifer is the seventh girl to be born to the Duggars, who previously had six girls and 10 boys, including two sets of twins. Mother and baby are doing just fine and Michelle is already saying she'd love to have more children.
By the way, I was serious about a new set of specials. Discovery Health will premiere a new Duggar show in September that will feature Jennifer Danielle shortly after her birth and at home with her family.

I have seen a few of their shows and I have to say these are the kind of people who should have many children. They are all well mannered and responsible. They don't drain the welfare system. They pay cash for everything and they home-school. This country needs more of these people.

I'm no eco-freak, but even I am shocked that these people are being celebrated considering the environmental impact they are having. They say they've used 90,000+ diapers on their effing kids, need an industrial-type kitchen to feed them, and 4 washers and 4 dryers for their clothes. Who knows what their utility bill looks like.
Just because you can afford to have 38 kids, doesn't mean you should be allowed to. What if they could afford to park a tanker truck full of oil on their front lawn and set that on fire, should that be allowed too? It'd probably have a similar environmental impact, only in a much shorter span of time.

I watched their documentary and I was appalled. The house they lived in before had not enough room so they built they're new house. I think I remember they were able to build it because everyone in their church helped. ie with money or building.
The kids are just odd. They're little kids but act like adults. They are really really religious. A huge part of the documentary was how God helped them with practically everything in their life.
She should really get her tubes tied. There's no way that the government isn't helping them.

Well, you could always move to China if you prefer a government that tells you whether you are allowed to have a certain number of kids or not.
I mean if you are worried about environmental impact, take it one step further and only allow medical care to those 65 years of age and younger. Why have all these old folks draining the system and having medicines keeping them alive longer than they are supposed to be living. Look at the environmental impact of all those adult diapers. Those suckers are 10 times the size of one kid diaper.
Seriously though, if they can afford to have that many kids and they are not draining their state in welfare or other handouts, then more power to them.

I heard about the Duggars years before they were on TV (in fact, I didn't know they were on TV at all until I read this). They're part of an activist movement known as "Full Quiver," whose members see as their moral obligation bringing as many Christians into the population as possible. You can see more here: http://www.quiverfull.com/index.php

Question - what happens with large families when one or both parents are unable to care for the kids? Sure, those parents (not just this family, but other large families) can afford to support the entire household, but what if?

I would imagine they would then be taken care of by next of kin. If not, they would be placed in foster care.

Woohoo, let's support attention whores and their willingness to continue to have a ridiculous number of children. If people would realize that the real impact to global warming is the number of people, which in turn increases the use of resources (such as oil and coal) they would realize there is no need for this type of excessive child bearing.
Sorry I don't understand why these people are on tv and why anyone would support this type of lifestyle. Regardless if they are currently able to support all the children on their own.

My husband and I only have six children at present. I can only dream of having so large a family and becoming that organized. How lucky they are!

I hope this family gets to read these. They should be ashamed of themselves. They are only doing all the television shows for money. And if you watch the program the kids take care of the younger kids. Nice house they used their children to buy?
