It seems like Rob Thomas is going through a mid-career crisis. After his series Veronica Mars was not renewed by the CW network back in May, Thomas has been floating around the television world looking for a new venture. Back in early July he was picked to head up the new ABC series Miss/Guided. However, two weeks later he left his position as executive producer and showrunner under the "creative differences" umbrella (I wonder if I could use that line when I leave my IT position).
Now, according to our dear, dear friend Michael Ausiello over at TV Guide, Thomas has joined Big Shots (another ABC show) as a consulting producer. He will be in good company this time around as the executive producers of the show, Danielle Stokdyk and Jennifer Gwartz, were former producers on Veronica Mars.
So far, Big Shots hasn't had the biggest buzz for this upcoming fall season. In his post, Ausiello doesn't hold back on his opinions of this show. In addition, our own Jen Creer gave a less than stellar appraisal of the program during our fall pilot reviews. Perhaps Thomas sees Big Shots as more of a challenge to make work then he did Miss/Guided. Then again, we may be writing about his "creative differences" on this show in a few weeks time.

"Big Shots" sounds like a complete rip-off of "Manchild" (seen occasionally on BBC-America), with Mcdermott as the Nigel Havers character. "Manchild" was brilliantly funny, but went places no US network would be willing to go. Rob Thomas is a clever, clever guy (though not clever enough to have stuck with what made "Veronica Mars"'s first season one of the best tv seasons ever), so he might be able to mine the British original for more gold. I, for one, will be interested to see how it works.

Both my husband and I shouted "Manchild" at the same time he moment we saw the ad for the show with 4 guys yakking at a spa. I will check this version out, but only because I enjoyed Terry, Patrick, and the boys so much. I am not expecting much more than a watered down version. I don't think that a male "Sex and the City" is going to do very well.
