FX eyes pilot centered on Russian Mafia

peter bergPeter Berg (currently a writer/director/producer for Friday Night Lights) and screenwriter Sheldon Turner have teamed up to create a pilot for FX that takes place within the world of the Russian Mafia.

The series (no title yet) centers on two undercover law enforcement officers who find themselves immersed in this world. One goes crazy and disappears and the other is forced to track him down. As Variety points out, it's not unlike Heart of Darkness (or Apocalypse Now, for those of you who don't read books).

Turner wrote the script and will also serve as executive producer. He says the man agent who hunts down the other may turn out to be more unlikable than the man he's supposed to find. Berg may direct the pilot, though that isn't certain at this point.

While there isn't a lot of information about this possible series, the fact that FX is interested in it has me intrigued. The network has proved itself with other great shows like Rescue Me and The Shield, and Turner himself states in the aforementioned Variety piece that the series won't rely on the usual cliches of other undercover series. Hopefully FX will snag the pilot so we can see for ourselves if Sheldon is right.
